Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of St Joseph’s College,

Welcome to Term 2. I trust that all students and families had a very relaxing and enjoyable break. It is always such a lovely time of year in this area of the world and we are afforded so many options that enable us to enjoy the beautiful surrounds. From all accounts, those that travelled have arrived safely back to us which is great news. I hope your Easter was a very happy and holy one and on behalf of the SJC staff, we look forward to working with your child in Term 2.

TRAGEDY IN SRI LANKA “I want to express my loving closeness to the Christian community, targeted while they were gathered in prayer, and all the victims of such cruel violence. I entrust to the Lord all those who were tragically killed and pray for the injured and all those who are suffering as a result of this dramatic event.” (Pope Francis, Easter Sunday)

The words of Pope Francis sum up how the world feels after yet another large-scale act of terror was witnessed. Like the Pope, I ask that you keep all the victims, their families, and the country of Sri Lanka in your prayers and thoughts as they recovery from this heinous act. What makes it worse is that many of the victims were doing exactly what many SJC families were doing during Easter; attending Mass or enjoying their holiday.

STAFF AND PARISH DEPARTURES It is with sadness I announce that Mr Adam Barron will be leaving the College at the end of May to take up a position at St Michael’s College, Merrimac. Adam has been with us since 2016 having arrived from Brisbane. He always has our students’ best interest at heart and he will be greatly missed at St Joseph’s. In some other sad news for the parish and our College, it was announced that our chaplain, Fr Gabriel Ezenwa will be leaving the Tweed Parish to take up a position in the Australian Air Force as a chaplain. We have greatly appreciated all that Fr Gabriel has brought to the College and our young people, even though he is a mad Manchester United fan!! We wish both Adam and Fr Gabriel all the best in their future endeavours and hope to see them both in the future.

LAST DAY OF TERM 1 I would like to thank the families who supported the College in ensuring their child was present for the final day of school in Term 1. Those who were with us witnessed a brilliantly delivered Easter Liturgy and enjoyed the company of their teachers and fellow students for one last day prior to the break. Shockingly, there was only just over 50% of the College cohort present on that day. Classes are expected to run until the final day of term without interruption. Such chronic absentee rates make such a task impossible. Whilst there would have been some legitimate illnesses and reasons for absences, many were not and this was done with the blessing of parents and carers.

In sending your child to SJC, you are accepting all of the responsibilities and expectations that come with being part of the community. This includes ensuring, when able to, your child is in attendance and correctly attired. I ask that all families please ensure this occurs.

REFURBISHMENT TO ROOMS During the holidays, some of the final rooms in the College have been given their first recarpeting and a coat of paint since they were built. Nearly every older classroom in the College has now undergone some form of improvement. This is to ensure that our students are presented with clean, contemporary looking environments to enhance their learning. All rooms have been air conditioned as well. We have also commenced the installation of the Salto electronic locking system to ensure all rooms are safe and compliant. Many of our classrooms did not have an internal locking mechanism, which is required in the event of a lockdown at the College. This installation process will continue throughout the year.

UNIFORM REVIEW Thank you to the families who provided some input during the last round of Student/Parent/Teacher Interviews regarding our College uniform. Prior to providing feedback to the community, I would like to open a final opportunity for parental voice by asking that if you have something to add, please use the digital link here. This will also be sent through the app. The majority of families are fairly happy with most elements of the uniform the way it currently is. There have been a number of minor suggestions that will be considered. From here, the intention is to now gather the voice of students and staff prior to making any minor or major changes.

ANNUAL SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT SURVEY This will occur from 6 to 17 May. Sixty SJC families will be chosen at random to complete the survey, and we greatly appreciate their support of this process. All students will be provided the opportunity to complete it, as well as staff. More information will be provided to the families chosen.

STUDENT CONGRATS At the end of last term, I was made aware that Year 11 students Scarlett Magnus and Emilly Jones and Alanah Clarke, and Year 10 student Sabhbh Crosbie, have been selected to take part in the Kokoda Youth Programme. This organisation was established in 2006 to ensure that young people in the Gold Coast area were aware of the sacrifices made during the Kokoda campaign. The girls will undertake a rigorous training programme, take part in the July Kokoda Challenge and culminate in travelling to PNG to hike the Kokoda Track. I know exactly what the girls are in for having completed the first two Kokoda Challenges with my father in ‘06 and ‘07 so I wish them all the best. Well done to Blake Nelson, Beau Strong, Ryan Stewart, Aiden Watts and Cameron Williams on their selection into the U/14 Gold Coast Football Community Cup, and Hayden Pirlo into the U/16 selection. These boys will travel to Cairns at the end of June for the Football Queensland Community Cup. We wish them all the best. Finally, well done to our Open Rugby League boys who have won through the first round of the Country Cup Championships with a 20-14 win over the new Ballina Coast High School. CONGRATULATIONS Congratulations to Claire Lynch and Eloise Easterbrook who attended the NSWCCC Swimming at Homebush on Friday 5 April. NSWCCC sees twenty entries for each age entered from each of the secondary catholic schools across the state. Both girls performed exceptionally well on the day achieving PB's for each of their respective events with Eloise placing 5th in 50m breastroke and 6th in 50m butterfly. The College is proud of you both, girls!

Congratulations also to Maya Rodgers, Isabel Selby and Savana Asprey who made their debut in the Senior Women's Football League for Tweed United at the end of April. The team had a win over Southport and caught the eye of their captain who said they, “were exceptional in the win.” Well done, girls!

Congratulations to Liam Townsend (Year 12) who has been selected in the Northern Country Rugby League Team to compete in Sydney at the end of this month. Liam will now be eligible or selection in the NSWCC Rugby League team to be picked in Sydney. Well done Liam!

NSW SCHOOL VACCINATION PROGRAM 2019 Students in Year 10 were issued last Monday (29 April) with an envelope from NSW Health regarding tomorrow’s Meningococcal ACWY Vaccination for all Year 10 students. Please make sure you read all documentation and have your child return the signed consent form to their homeroom teacher prior to tomorrow’s vaccination. Important: please note that no vaccination will take place without an original signed consent form (no faxes/emails).

REWARDS PROGRAM The College has again registered in the Woolworths Earn and Learn promotion. If you collect the stickers, they can be brought into student reception where we will fill out the sticker sheets. Through the efforts made by parents last year we were able to gain a large number of various balls and pieces of sports equipment that is used at lunch times by the students. Training will start in May with 4:00am starts for a weekend hike every weekend on a Sunday.

Introduction of hiking bags come into play which they then have to pack and carry on every hike with the necessary weight being up to 20kg.

Walking in the footsteps of Australian soldiers/diggers who fought in Papua New Guinea on the Kokoda trail in 1942.

SCIENCE

The Big Science Competition is an online science competition testing critical thinking and problem solving skills with competition questions aligned to the Australian Curriculum – Science. All students in years 7-9 can enter with a payment of $7 being handed into the office in an envelope labelled ‘Big Science Competition’ with the name and grade of the student involved. Competition registration will close on Tuesday 14 May and the competition will occur at the end of the month. Barriers to Developing a Good Memory

Many students say, ‘I don’t have a good memory,’ but there are many barriers to developing a good memory that are able to be overcome. Here are the top three:

1. NEGATIVE MINDSET / ATTITUDE Henry Ford once famously said, “whether you believe you can, or you can’t, you are right”. This refers to your mindset or mental attitude, and the concept that your mind is powerful enough to enable your thoughts to create your reality. If you have a negative attitude to your memory, it will likely reduce your chance of developing and maintaining a good memory. There are some simple steps you can take to start making changes to negative thoughts. Be aware that negative thoughts are just a habit, and habits can be changed with a little effort. Awareness is the key to changing a habit, as you need to consciously be aware of the current habit before you can change it – so start catching yourself in the act of making negative statements. Affirm your intention to improve the way you think. Then correct the negative statement you just made, and make it into a more positive one.

2. ABSENTMINDEDNESS / NOT PAYING ATTENTION

The first stage of the memory process is encoding the information that is to be remembered – thus the brain uses the senses and emotions to process the information and form a memory. Here are some ways in which you can be less absentminded:

- Setting an intention to become more attentive.

- Sitting up front where there are less things to distract you, especially if you have difficulty paying attention in class.

- Taking notes in class to ensure you listen.

3. STRESS / ANXIETY Stress will increase the likelihood of being distracted, resulting in low concentration meaning that information may not be encoded accurately – and thus cannot be later retrieved. Stress may also result in mental blanks. For example, if you’re stressed before an exam, you may not be able to think clearly and access and retrieve the information you need. The best thing to do is to take ten deep breaths and calm down to allow your mind to focus.

ANZAC DAY MARCH 2019 Congratulations and thank you to the 93 students who represented our College at the recent ANZAC Day March at Coolangatta-Tweed. ANZAC CEREMONY 2019 On Monday 29 April, the school gathered to commemorate ANZAC Day. We gathered to remember all those who, through their generosity and service, have been involved in conflict in order to bring about peace for the nation of Australia and its allies. This year we also especially remembered the nurses of ANZAC for their commitment, bravery and compassion. The St Joseph’s College community is very grateful to Mr Ray Niland and his wife Rhonda. On behalf of Legacy, and with considerable service experience himself, Ray presented the annual ANZAC Day address. For more than a hundred years, women have served as nurses in Australia’s armed forces. Ever since the first military nurses sailed for the Boer War in South Africa in January 1900, Australian nurses have served in theatres of war and conflict around the world. They have worked under the most hazardous conditions, endured extreme discomfort in the most harrowing of circumstances and sometimes lost their lives. Over recent decades the ranks of female military personnel have swelled and women are now to be found in most branches of the Australian Defence Force. From 1972 onwards, men were permitted to serve within the Royal Australian Army Nursing Corps. Women still serve as military nurses, but now also as doctors and in other fields of military medicine. As well as treating those wounded in the wars and conflicts in which Australians have fought, military nurses now also deploy on peacekeeping operations treating wounded service men and women from Australia and from other countries’ armed forces, and often also local civilians.
