Welcome to our School Newsletter for Week 3, Term 3. Interschool sport has returned. It seems that COVID can’t keep a good team down!
It has been such a joy to see the return of sporting carnivals and events for our students. Our
PE teachers, Miss Twyford and Miss McCann have made rapid changes to their teaching and
learning plans to incorporate these new events. On Thursday 30th of August Miss McCann,
Miss HAvers, Mr Hussell and Mr Graefe took a cast of thousands, our entire year 8 and 9 clas-
ses to Booleroo for the 5-a-side Soccer Carnival. Peterborough High Spirit was in full force and
the students enjoyed using the soccer skills they have developed in PE class, not to mention a
quick side trip for a little Geography focus! On Monday the 3rd of August Miss Twyford and
the open boys badminton team competed, and were then joined by Ms Amey and the open
boys netball team for an on court challenge at Trinity.
Have you seen the Stage 1 Tourism class wandering the streets? On Monday of week 3 Miss
Havers took her Tourism experts on a Peterborough safari and explored but a taste of what
our terrific tourist town has to offer. The District Council and History Group were very gener-
ous with their time and facilities and our students are now prepared for local tourism tasks.
On Tuesday the 4th, Mrs Coe and the Year 10 SACE PLP class spend the day completing the
Work Experience Induction. This is a compulsory training that all students must do before
being allowed to engage in work experience. These students are now aware of their safety
rights and responsibilities when in a work place.
To help you support the PHS learners in your home, you will find a couple of different docu-
ments available to you in the coming weeks. For students in years 8-10 you will see, and be
asked to sign and return, a term overview of assessment tasks including draft and final due
dates. For SACE families, you will receive the Term 3 SACE Snapshot, as well as copies of due
dates for every subject your child is enrolled in. Please use these in conjunction with our new
request for extension process by submitting extension requests to your child’s teacher at least
one week before the due date.
Congratulations to Cody Twyford who has been appointed to the position of Assistant Princi-
pal, working alongside Jenny Coe and Lauren Amey on the leadership team. Cody will contin-
ue with her 8-9 management role, and now also support the 10-12 learners at PHS.
Finally, I would like to thank you all for the kind words and expressions of support over the
last couple of weeks. It has been a whirlwind of learning, and I am forever grateful to David
Marino for his generosity in teaching me the ropes. I am looking forward to working with the
staff, parents and especially the students for the rest of the year to keep our school in the A1
condition in which David has left it.
I will still be teaching my senior English class for this year, but have handed my year 10 stu-
dents to the very capable Paul Arthur, a Permanent Relief Teacher for our region, while we
find an English teacher to replace me. As a former PHS scholar and proud Peterboroughian I
feel so incredibly honoured to sit in the Principals’s chair for the next few months.
Stay warm and rugged up during this cold snap!
Regards,
Sonja

Careers Days It’s the time of the year when the Universities are having their Open Days, all be it Virtual
Open days because of the virus restrictions. Posters have been placed up in the Student
Services Hub in the library advertising the details and if you want to check these out. They
are also available on the individual websites for the Universities.
These open days, in whatever format they take, are really useful for career planning and
potentially which subjects students might need to choose in Stage 1 and Stage 2 to keep
certain pathways open.
There is also a lot of information, aside from the information about Open Days, on Univer-
sity websites about courses and what they require.
VET Courses Planning for 2021 I have had a preliminary chat to our current Year 9 students about the VET courses that will
be offered onsite to them from the beginning of next year. Certificate 2 in Auto Servicing
(Thursdays for 18 months) and Certificate 2 Kitchen Operations (1 day a week for 18 weeks
in the second semester). These are not the only courses that can be done through VET but
these are face to face and delivered onsite at PHS. I will be contacting parents and caregiv-
ers once students have given me a firm indication of their intentions to take up one of the
face to face VET courses and invite you in to have a chat about just what this option in-
cludes.
Please ring me at PHS – 86512306 if you have any questions or would like some infor-
mation on the courses mentioned. Other VET courses are available through the Open Ac-
cess College and other providers but they would be primarily online.
Green Wood We have recently had a number of trees within the school yard trimmed or chopped down.
We have some green wood (which would need to be left for about a year before it could be
burnt) available for purchase. The cost of a 6 by 4 trailer load is $50. Please phone me at
the school if you are interested in buying a trailer load of this wood.

We were so excited to begin Term 3 with ‘back to new normal’ Assemblies.
Unfortunately, no parents or caregiver will be able to attend the Week 5
Learning Centre Assembly, but we are sure your child will fill you in with all
the great things happening at PHS– Thanks Miss Twyford

Assistant Principal News
Welcome to the Week 3 Newsletter.
So many things have been happening here—we have been non-stop sporting. 8/9 aside Soccer,
Open Badminton and Open Boys Netball. Not to mention Open girls and boys Volleyball in Jame-
stown next week on Thursday. Following that we have, Basketball in Week 7 in Port Augusta (date
TBC). And Fast 5 Year 9 & 10 netball in Week 9.
Here are some happy snaps from this week on
camp.
I would also like to celebrate those who have already completed
the Premier’s Reading Challenge! They are Benjamin Wynen, Kathy
Dunne, Jamie Starke, Erin Weber, Faith Wilson, Davina Bernales, Tara
Higginson-Pollard and Miki Weston.
With just under 4 WEEKS TO GO, students should be reading each af-
ternoon at home to ensure they finish on time. After their whole
homegroup finishes, students get to design a top to celebrate their
success. If you do reading at home, make sure you mark it off with
Mrs Tuckwell at the Student Services Hub.
If you have any questions, please email me at
Enjoy your next couple of weeks—stay safe.

Last term, the Year 9 students completed their topic on Atoms and are now starting their new top-
ic on Chemical Changes. The Year 9’s participated in a science practical where they tested how
acidic or alkaline common household objects were by using the natural dye of red cabbage. Stu-
dents boiled the red cabbage to extract the natural dye and added them to the following test
tubes that contained salt solution, distilled water, vinegar, antacid tablets, hydrochloric acid and
sodium hydroxide. The colour produced demonstrated whether the solutions were acidic, neutral
or alkaline (basic) in reference to the pH chart below.

The year 8 Design and Technology students have been busy producing their first two products.
The year 8 students produced a large wooden peg as their first project, where they developed a number of
workshop skills through the application of hand tools and some machines. They are currently finishing their
serviette holders, where they are building on their learning from their first task, and learning new skills, like
the safe use of the band saw.
Congratulations to all of the year 8 students who have done a fabulous job of applying their workshop skills
in a safe manner, and we look forward to seeing their critical and creative thinking shine through in their
next projects.
(Products by all year 8 students) (Products by: David, Kaitlin, and Riley)
The Learning Centre students have been working persistently over the course of the year to produce some
amazing small tables. These students have tirelessly applied their energy throughout the COVID-19
pandemic.
All of the Learning Centre students have built on their prior knowledge and developed new skills within the
workshop. They have used a range of hand tools and machines. All of the students have talked about the
skills they have learnt in creating the two different joints for their table frames, a lap joint and a mortice and
tenon joint. They all used their critical and creative thinking skills to design their own table tops, and use a
range of different materials for this.
Some of the students were excited to apply stains to their tables, while other preferred the natural look.
We at PHS are excited to see what these four students will make next.

WHATS HAPPENING IN VISUAL ART?
The stage 1 and 2 visual art students are each undertaking individual investigations into different mediums and pro-
cesses. Logan is looking at acrylic pouring for her visual study and Carlos is looking at social media art trends for his
investigation. He has currently looked at acrylic pouring and crayon art.
The year 8 visual art students have began a unit of work looking at the topic of still life. They will be learning how to
paint from observations, however they have done their first observational art using charcoal.
All students involved are doing an excellent job this term and should be proud.

Tourism Excursion The stage 2 tourism students are completing a case study on Peterborough for their first tourism task.
They needed to find out about tourism sectors, tourism related employment and factors that influence
tourism in Peterborough.
To complete this task, we went on a walking tour of the main street in Peterborough on Thursday the
30/7/2020. On this tour we visited Steamtown, 229 on Main, The Peterborough History Group at the
print works, Duck
Duck Goose, The
Burg, the YMCA and
we had lunch at the
Peterborough Take
Away. The tourism
students found some
excellent primary da-
ta about tourism in
Peterborough and
had a great time on
their excursion.

Our students have been working hard in their Geography units this term.
Year 10 have been looking at indigenous land management practices, and are moving on to
how we manage urban environments. They have learnt more about how to write essays
using correct structures, and how to research and reference their research. The concept of
referencing your ideas and information has been a big focus in HASS this year, and it has
been great to see students progressing in this area.
Year 9 have also been working hard, studying Biomes and Food Security. They have com-
pleted a local biomes report about the role of Goyder's Line. In this report they looked at
what kind of biomes (environments), land use and rainfall occur north and south of the
line, and how these things are related. Student’s produced a correctly structured report on
power point, which included several types of thematic maps.
We were able to have a stop at the Goyder's Line memorial between Orroroo and Pekina
on the way back from our 5 a side soccer competition in Booleroo, which was a great op-
portunity for our students to connect their learning to the real world.
Year 11 have also done well, completing a draft report with maps about Peterborough, in-
cluding demographic, topographic, weather, industrial and social information.
We look forward to seeing continued growth and achievement from our HASS students!
Mr Hussell.

On Thursday of week 2 the Year 8 and 9 students travelled to Booleroo to compete in the 5 A Side Soccer Carnival. Students have been participating in a unit of Soccer in physical edu-cation in preparation for the carnival. We entered two boys and two girls’ teams to com-pete for the day. We had a few wins and there were plenty of goals scored in what was a glorious day! We were very proud of the way our students represented the school and their teamwork and leadership throughout the day. A big thankyou to Catrina Duncan who um-pired on behalf of our school for the day.

Recently the Year 8’s and Year 9’s have been learning about
Bullying and all the different forms it can take.
It is Very important to Peterborough High School that we all
feel comfortable in our learning environment and never feel
afraid or like we do not belong.
If anyone ever feels like they are in a situation that makes
them feel uncomfortable we have the people and the space
to make things right!!
