Dear Harris Community:

What a great beginning to the school year! It’s been wonderful to see our students enjoying getting to know their

teachers and begin learning at high levels!

I would like to take the opportunity to share our mission here at Harris. It is to promote high levels of Spanish and

English competencies, academic achievement in both languages, high self-esteem and positive cross-cultural

attitudes. This mission that we strive for as a staff is what truly makes us different and we take pride in that. We

want every child to receive the time and support they need to learn and achieve at high levels in English and

Spanish. I am truly grateful to be part of this service to our community.

This year in PSD we will be on the trimester system for reporting grades. In October when we have our

Parent/Teacher Conferences, you will talk about your child, their growth, goals for them, but we will not have

report cards. Report cards will be sent home every 12 weeks in November, March and May. The trimesters allows

teachers to really get to know your child and have more data before submitting grades.

We are excited for this school year and we look forward to serving you. 2015-16 will be an awesome year!

Students are allowed to receive five bus passes per year. If your student needs a bus pass we require a written note

or a phone call from the students parent AND the parent who’s house the student wil be going to.

use it to access the information you need. To begin your journey into our pages, choose what

kind of user you are and start through that portal: Staff, Parent, or Student. Have fun

Book Check-out

Your child has started visiting the Harris Bilingual Library and Media Center. He/she

will begin bringing home 1 or 2 books from the library each week. Books are due back

to the library the following week on their library day. Students may renew a book that

they are still reading by bringing it back to the library with them.

We will be teaching and reinforcing good library habits:

How to handle books carefully;

How to keep books in a safe place;

How to return books to the library on time.

In our library, we do not charge fines for late books. However, we do charge for book damages. These may

include replacing the book. If the book is lost, we charge the cost to replace the book.

We are looking forward to sharing our love of reading and books with your child. If you have any questions,

News from Carlos Delano Meikel – Art Specialist

I just wanted to drop you all a quick note with some information about what will be

going on in Art with your students this school year! We will be doing a little bit of

everything this year: Drawing, Painting, Sculpture and Print making amongst other

types of projects. Also, because of the way the school district Art shows are now, I

will not need to keep as much Art over the course of the year as I have in the past,

so you will see more of your students’ work coming home!

Art Shows:

There are three School District Art shows scheduled for this year:

The Superintendent’s Art Show or Super Art @ The Johannsen Support Service Center

The Lincoln Center Art Show @ The Fort Collins Lincoln Center

The Designs and Images Art Show @ The CSU Hatton Art Gallery

No official dates have been scheduled for these shows, but as each show draws near, I will send out information.

I am so looking forward to working with our students again this year! They have such great imaginations and it is

amazing to see them at work!

News from Josh Gomez – PE Specialist

Harris Running Club: Tuesdays & Wednesdays, 4:00-4:30 p.m.

The Harris Running Club will start up again on Tuesday September 22nd. We will be meeting

every Tuesday and Wednesday immediately after school until 4:30pm. This is a great way to get

exercise and make new friends. No experience needed, just the desire to be outside and stretch

those legs. Awards are given for miles that are run.

Morning PE: Tuesdays & Wednesdays, 8:00-8:45 a.m.

We will be continuing the morning PE program again this fall. We had an excellent and consistent turn out last

year and look forward to the same for 2015-2016. We will begin the morning of Tuesday September 15th

at 8am and will have it every Tuesday and Wednesday morning. There is no sign up necessary, so please

encourage your kids to come in for some great physical activity before school starts!

Just drop them off no earlier than 8:00 a.m. and let the fun and healthy exercise begin! If you have

questions, please feel free to call me at 488-5216.

Sports Equipment

We have gently used sports equipment to loan to Harris families for their young athletes who may need a piece of

equipment for a sports season. It is a good alternative to purchasing something new that will be outgrown before it

is worn out. If you have some gently used cleats, jerseys, shin guards, etc., donations are welcome. Please contact

Mr. Gomez at 488-5216 with information on the items that are available or to contribute.

News from the Heath Office

Medications at School

According to the Poudre School District policy, ALL medications, whether prescription, over-the-

counter, long-term or short-term, require a written authorization signed by both the prescribing

practitioner and the parent/ guardian. This includes cough drops, Tylenol, vitamins, etc.

Herbal and homeopathic remedies also require written authorization from a prescribing

practitioner and parent.

State guidelines define “prescribing practitioner” as a “physician, podiatrist, dentist, advanced practice nurse with

prescriptive authority, physician’s assistant who has directions of a physician or written protocol.”

Please take note…

The written authorization must be renewed yearly. Forms are available in our Health Office.

All medications must be in the original bottle/container/package, whether prescription or over the counter.

No medications will be accepted in envelopes, baggies, etc.

All medications are kept in a locked cabinet in our Health Office. Those medications requiring refrigeration

are kept in a locked box in a designated refrigerator. Students may not keep medications and administer

them to themselves in order to help prevent a potential danger that medications may be lost, improperly

used, or accidentally ingested by another student.

ASTHMA INHALERS may be carried by a student, if the authorization form required is signed by both the

prescribing practitioner and the parent/guardian.

These procedures are important for safeguarding ALL students.



News from the Parent Teacher Organization

The Harris PTO supports the students of Harris Bilingual Immersion School through community

building, fundraising, and financial and volunteer assistance.

PTO Meeting

Join us for the first Harris Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) meeting on Thursday,

September 10 at 6:00 p.m. All are welcome! Childcare and pizza will be provided.

Volunteer at Harris!

We have many opportunities for parents, family, and community members to get involved by volunteering at the

school!

All volunteers must register with Poudre School District and pass a background check before

working with students. This includes classroom volunteering, volunteering for special school events, and

attending field trips.

If you haven't registered yet, just go to http://www.psdschools.org/partnership-and-volunteer-

center/volunteers to sign up! The process usually takes about one week.

Please note that the volunteer website is only available in English. Paper volunteer applications in English

and Spanish are available in the Harris office.

When you come in to volunteer, go to the main office, get a lanyard and your nametag from the wooden

box, and scan the barcode at the computer to sign in. Choose your expected departure time and volunteer

activity on the screen.

When you leave, you will scan your barcode again to sign out. Office staff is available to help if you

need any help with the sign in process.

Save the Date for our Ninth Annual Stegosaurus Stomp on October 7, 2015!

Our Ninth Annual Stegosaurus Stomp is scheduled for Wednesday, October 7, 2015. Each student will run and/or

walk laps around a course on the Harris playground. As the largest fundraiser for the school, the Stomp is a ton of

fun and helps promote health and wellness!

We need parent volunteers to make the Stomp a success. As a volunteer, you can help with the water station,

snacks, counting laps, punching cards, and cheering!

Watch your child's Thursday folder for a sign-up sheet with additional details about volunteering. Completed

volunteer forms are due to the Harris office by Friday, September 25th. All volunteers must be registered with

PSD through their website (as noted in the Volunteer section above). Let’s make the 2015 Stomp our best one yet!

Birthday Policy

Birthday celebrations at school are a fun and festive way to make every child feel special.

However, in recent years, classroom birthday celebrations have become heavily sugar-coated (i.e.,

cupcakes, cookies, candy, cake) which conflicts with our PSD wellness policy

(http://www.psdschools.org/sites/default/files/ADF-R.pdf), that encourages non-food rewards

and healthier options during classroom celebrations.

Harris has implemented a no-food birthday policy in order to celebrate birthdays in a healthy way. Teachers have

the option of helping children choose games from the Birthday Box or other activities that encourage student

interaction and movement. Instead of individual parties, birthdays will be celebrated collectively once a month.

This policy is an effort to be fair to each child and to ensure that every student has the opportunity to celebrate his

or her special day.

Estimada Comunidad de Harris:

¡Ha sido un hermoso comienzo de nuestro año escolar! Ha sido maravilloso observar cómo nuestros alumnos se

conocen con sus maestros y empiezan a aprender niveles cada vez más altos.

Me gustaría tomar esta oportunidad para compartir nuestra misión en Harris. Nuestras metas comprenden el

promover altos niveles de competencia tanto en inglés como en español, logros académicos en ambos idiomas, alta

autoestima y actitudes interculturales positivas. Nuestro personal se esfuerza en alcanzar esta misión, lo cual nos

hace realmente diferentes a otras escuelas y nos llena de orgullo. Queremos que cada niño reciba el tiempo y

apoyo necesarios para alcanzar sus metas y las de la escuela. Estoy realmente agradecido de ser parte de este

servicio a nuestra comunidad.

Este año en PSD vamos a usar el sistema de trimestres para reportar las notas. Cuando celebremos nuestras

Reuniones entre Padres y Maestros en octubre, ustedes podrán hablar de su niño, su crecimiento, las metas para él

o ella, pero no vamos a tener los reportes del progreso disponibles en ese momento. Los reportes se van a mandar

a la casa cada 12 semanas en noviembre, marzo y mayo. Este sistema de trimestres permite que los maestros

lleguen a conocer con profundidad a su niño y tengan más información antes de entregar las notas.

Estamos entusiasmados con este año escolar y pueden contar con nuestro apoyo. ¡El año escolar 2015-2016 es y

será estupendo!

Noticias de Carlos Delano Meikel – Especialista de Arte

¡Por medio de esta nota corta, quiero informarles sobre lo que vamos a hacer con sus hijos

en la clase de Arte, durante este año escolar! Haremos un poco de todo: dibujar, pintar,

esculpir y hacer impresiones. Estos serán algunos de los proyectos en los que trabajaremos.

Además, debido a la forma cómo se realizarán las EXPOSICIONES DE ARTE del Distrito, no

será necesario que guarden tantas obras de arte de los estudiantes, como en años anteriores.

¡De esta manera, ustedes podrán tener en casa el trabajo de sus hijos!

Noticias de Josh Gomez – Especialista de Educación Física

Club de corredores de Harris: Martes y miércoles, de 4 a 4:30 p.m. El Club de Corredores de Harris empezará de nuevo el martes, 22 de septiembre. Vamos a reunirnos cada

martes y miércoles, inmediatamente después de que termine el día escolar, hasta las 4:30 p.m. Esta es una

manera estupenda de hacer ejercicio y conseguir nuevas amistades. No se necesita tener experiencia, tan

solo el deseo de estar al aire libre, y estirar las piernas. Se darán premios por las millas que se recorran.

Programa de Educación Física en la mañana: Martes y miércoles, de 8:00 a 8:45 a.m.De nuevo en este otoño continuaremos con el programa de Educación Física en la mañana. El año pasado tuvimos una

participación excelente y consistente, y espero que siga así este año escolar 2015-2016. Empezaremos este martes, 15 de

septiembre, a las 8:00 a.m., y tendremos este programa todos los martes y miércoles en la mañana. No hay necesidad

de inscribirse en él; por favor animen a sus niños para que participen en una actividad física maravillosa, antes de iniciar el

día escolar!

¡Tan solo dejen a sus niños en la escuela a partir de las 8:00 a.m., y permitan que comience el ejercicio divertido y

Artículos deportivos Tenemos artículos deportivos que podemos prestar a los atletas jóvenes de las familias de Harris, que pudieran necesitarlos

para una temporada de deporte. Es una buena alternativa, en lugar de comprar algo nuevo que les quedará chico antes de que

se desgaste. Se agradece la donación de calzado para jugar deportes, camisetas para deporte, espinilleras, etc., ligeramente

usados. Si están interesados en recibir información acerca de los artículos que tenemos disponibles, o si desean

Noticias de la Oficina de Salud

Medicinas en la escuela De acuerdo con las normas del Distrito Escolar Poudre, TODAS las medicinas, ya sean con o sin receta

médica, a largo o corto plazo, requieren un permiso por escrito, firmado por la persona autorizada

para recetar, y el padre de familia o tutor legal. Esto incluye remedios para la tos, Tylenol, vitaminas,

etc., así como remedios a base de hierbas o de tipo homeopático.

Las normas del Estado definen a “la persona autorizada para recetar” como un “médico, podólogo, dentista, un(a)

enfermero(a) de práctica avanzada con autoridad para recetar, y un profesional médico con instrucciones de un médico o el

protocolo por escrito.”

Por favor recuerden que…

El permiso escrito se debe renovar cada año escolar; los formularios están disponibles en nuestra Oficina de Salud.

Todas las medicinas deben estar en la botella/recipiente/empaque original, ya sean medicinas con o sin receta médica.

No se aceptarán medicinas en sobres, bolsas de plástico, etc.

Todas las medicinas se guardan en un lugar con llave en la Oficina de Salud. Los medicamentos que requieran

refrigeración se colocan en una caja cerrada con llave, en el refrigerador destinado para tal uso. Con el fin de prevenir

el peligro potencial de que una medicina se pierda, se use de manera incorrecta, o se ingiera accidentalmente por otro

estudiante, los alumnos no deben llevar consigo las medicinas, ni administrárselas a sí mismos.

Un estudiante puede llevar consigo un INHALADOR PARA ASMA, siempre y cuando la hoja de permiso tenga la

firma del profesional del cuidado de la salud, que ha recetado la medicina, y la del padre de familia o tutor legal.

Estas reglas son importantes para proteger a TODOS los alumnos.



Noticias de la Organización de Padres de Familia y Maestros

La Organización de Padres y Maestros de Harris (PTO, por sus siglas en inglés) apoya a los

estudiantes de la Escuela Bilingüe Harris mediante el fortalecimiento de la comunidad, recaudación

de fondos, ayuda financiera y voluntarios.

Reunión de PTO Asistan a la primera reunión de la Organización de Padres y Maestros de Harris (PTO, por sus siglas

en inglés) que se va a llevar a cabo el jueves, 10 de septiembre a las 6:00 p.m. ¡Se invita a todos los interesados! Se

ofrecerá cuidado infantil y pizza.

Próximas reuniones de PTO El PTO típicamente se reune el segundo jueves de cada mes, a las 6:00 p.m. A continuación se presentan las fechas para el

Vacante en el cargo de tesorero(a) de PTO Si están buscando una manera significativa de involucrarse en la comunidad de Harris, estamos buscando a un(a) tesorero(a)

para PTO, este año. Tendrán la oportunidad de seguir de cerca a Lynette, nuestra tesorera que pronto finalizará su labor como

tal, para asegurar que la transición no tenga contratiempos. Formar parte de PTO es una manera fabulosa de conectarse otros

padres de familia y educadores, perfeccionar sus habilidades, expandir su hoja de vida, y obtener experiencia en el liderazgo

del voluntariado.

Responsabilidades de el(la) tesorero(a):

Elaborar el presupuesto, pagar las cuentas y subvenciones, darle seguimiento a las finanzas de PTO, y proporcionar un informe mensual a PTO.

Compromiso de tiempo: Típicamente, entre 3 y 6 horas al mes, incluyendo la reunión de PTO.

Nuestra 9.a Pisada Anual de Stegosaurio (Stegosaurus Stomp) se ha programado para el miércoles, 7 de octubre de 2015.

Cada estudiante correrá y/o caminará alrededor de un circuito en el parque de recreo de Harris. Esta es la recaudación de

fondos mayor de la escuela; ¡la Pisada de Estegosaurio (Stomp) es súper divertida, y ayuda a fomentar la salud y el bienestar!

Necesitamos padres que sirvan como voluntarios para lograr que La Pisada de Estegosaurio sea todo un éxito. Como

voluntarios, nos pueden ayudar con el puesto de agua, los bocadillos, a contar las vueltas alrededor del circuito, perforar

tarjetas, y ¡dar ánimo!

Estén atentos a recibir una hoja para registrarse en el evento, en la carpeta del jueves de su hijo(a), junto con información

específica sobre el trabajo como voluntarios. La fecha de entrega de las hojas de registro para servir como voluntarios es el

viernes, 25 de septiembre, en la oficina de Harris. Todos los voluntarios se deben haber registrado con el Distrito

Escolar Poudre a través de su sitio web (tal como se señaló anteriormente, en la sección para voluntarios). ¡Hagamos

que La Pisada de Estegosaurio del año 2015 sea la mejor!

El impacto de PTO Una de las funciones principales de PTO es organizar a las personas que lo apoyan, con el fin de llevar a cabo recaudaciones

de fondos, y los distribuyan con el propósito de ayudar a la educación de los estudiantes de Harris. Esto no incluye los fondos

provenientes de las Ferias del Libro, los cuales van directamente a la biblioteca y los medios de recursos didácticos, para que

realicen las adquisiciones necesarias. A continuación se presenta lo que PTO logró en el año escolar 2014-2015:

Noticias del Comité para el Bienestar

Norma para celebrar los cumpleaños La celebración de los cumpleaños en la escuela es una manera divertida y festiva de hacer que cada niño(a)

se sienta especial. Sin embargo, en los últimos años, la celebración de los cumpleaños en los salones de

clase se convertió en fiestas demasiado “azucaradas” (es decir, llenas de pastelitos, galletas, dulces, tortas),

que no cumplían con la norma de bienestar de nuestro Distrito Escolar Poudre (PSD, por sus siglas en

inglés) (http://www.psdschools.org/sites/default/files/ADF-R.pdf). Esta norma anima a dar premios que no incluyan

alimentos, y brinda opciones más saludables durante las celebraciones en el salón de clase.

Harris ha puesto en práctica una norma para la celebración de cumpleaños sin incluir alimentos, con el fin de festejarlos de

una manera saludable. Los maestros tienen la opción de ayudar a los niños a escoger juegos de la Caja de Cumpleaños, u

otras actividades que fomenten en los estudiantes su interacción y el ejercicio. En lugar de fiestas individuales, los

cumpleaños se celebrarán una vez al mes, de manera colectiva. Esta norma es un esfuerzo para ser justo con cada niño(a), y

asegurar que cada estudiante tenga la oportunidad de celebrar su día especial.

Recaudación de fondos

Tarjetas de Albertsons

Esta es una manera fácil de ayudarnos para que recaudemos dinero para la escuela.

Cada vez que hagan compras en Albertsons, simplemente escaneen la tarjeta, y el 1% de

sus compras irá a Harris. ¡Podemos recibir hasta $24.000 en un año! Si tienen amistades

y parientes que hagan compras en Albertsons, también pueden obtener tarjetas para ellos

en la oficina.

¡Usar las tarjetas de regalo recargables de King Soopers es una forma fácil de apoyar a

Harris, sin gastar dinero adicional! Funciona de la siguiente manera:

Compren una tarjeta de regalo a PTO, por $5. Esta tarjeta viene cargada con $5.

Antes de hacer alguna compra, vayan al área del servicio al cliente de su King

Soopers de la ciudad.

Recarguen su tarjeta con cualquier cantidad de dinero hasta $500, por medio del

método de pago que acostumbren (dinero en efectivo, cheque, tarjeta de crédito o

débito).

Utilicen su tarjeta cuando vayan de compras. Recárguenla cuando sea necesario.

Box Tops

Busquen los cupones de Box Top en cientos de productos. Córtenlos y envíenlos a la

escuela con su hijo(a).

Tapas de la Lechería

Morning Fresh

La Lechería Morning Fresh Dairy contribuye 5 centavos por cada tapa de botella que

tenga su “logo”. Recolecten las tapas, y envíenlas con su hijo(a) a Harris.

NOTA: Cuando un salón de clase recolecte 125 cupones de box tops y tapas de

botella de la lechería Morning Fresh, los alumnos recibirán 15 minutos

adicionales de recreo, o tiempo libre.

Programa Cartridges for Kids

(CFK, por sus siglas en

inglés)

CFK (Cartridges for Kids®) es un programa protector del medio ambiente, que le da

DINERO a las escuelas y organizaciones, sin ánimo de lucro, por artículos reciclables

tales como teléfonos celulares, cartuchos vacíos para impresoras, computadoras

portátiles, iPod, PDA, video juegos y consolas, cámaras digitales, DVD y aparatos

GPS.

La participación ayuda a proteger el medio ambiente, al no dejar que haya aparatos

electrónicos en los rellenos sanitarios. ¡Reciclar ayuda a conservar nuestros recursos

naturales!

¡Nuestra Campaña de Donación Directa se inaugura el mes de septiembre! Recibirán

más información en la carpeta del jueves de su hijo(a). La donación directa es una

manera excelente y fácil de apoyar a Harris a lo largo del año. ¡Cualquier cantidad,

grande o pequeña, se agradece inmensamente.¡Junto con noctros, apoyen a nuestra

maravillosa escuela!
