Lesson Approach To begin this lesson, provide pupils with the pictures from the In Focus task, scissors and a strip of card. Discuss with them how you could go about putting the pictures in order from the first thing Ravi did in the evening to the last. What do you need to look at? Are there any similarities between comparing these times and comparing numbers (tens first/hour first, ones next/minutes next)? Begin sorting the pictures in order with the class, starting with the first thing Ravi did (the earliest time). Then ask them to stick the pictures in order on the strip of card. Prompt pupils to look at the pictures for 7 o'clock and half past 7 and ask them what he did at 7 o'clock. Then ask them what he did NEXT. Ask them what this word means and let them discuss. Then show them the picture for half past 6. What did Ravi do at half past 6? When did this happen in comparison to when he was watching TV and doing his homework? This is a chance to introduce and use the terms BEFORE and AFTER. What do these terms mean? Give them time to tell a story of Ravi using the terms 'next', 'before' and 'after' using the story strip they made or the pictures in Let's Learn. During Guided Practice, pupils are answering questions about Holly's Monday morning timetable. This exercise reinforces the terms 'next,' 'before' and 'after' as they relate to time. Pupils can work in pairs with one pupil asking the questions and the other answering them, then switching roles.
