A grid reference tells you where something is on a map.

There are two parts to a grid reference:

The 1st letter or number tells you how far across the map something is.

The 2nd letter or number tells you how far up the map something is.

Example - How do you find grid reference D2?

Here's one way to do it:

First go across the way until you get to D.

Then go up the way until you get to 2.

Here's another way:

Go along the bottom with your finger until you get to D.

Go up the side with your other finger until you get to 2.

Move one finger across and one finger up until they meet.

Both ways have found D2.

Show the images on Grid Reference 1 PPT. What can you see? Let the children name the items. Give them a range of grid references e.g. A5 or C3 Can they locate and

Firstly practise the 3 set dance moves to be included, to be performed altogether. When the moves have been practised, chn to choreograph travel and turns to connect the 3 primary moves i.e. skipping, hopping, jumping, turning. How many of each move will we do?

Plenary: Video the dance and Children evaluate it; what they liked and what could be improved next time.

Activity: Do The Starry Eyed Stan Grid Reference sheet. Find the sea creatures on the grid. Then, write down their grid references. Next, cut out the pictures at the bottom of the second sheet, read their grid references and plot them on the grid.

Talk about: What are grid references. When do we use them? How do we use them? Which letters or numbers do we use first? Recap these. Each child to tell their friend/family about their chosen pirate. Can you find a pirate with a parrot, compass, eye patch? Put all the pirates in the middle.
