English

Remind your child of yesterday’s exploration of water sounds and tell them that you are going to read aloud Tony Mitton’s poem, Voices of Water. Discussion: What do you predict he might write about?Read the poem aloud, encouraging your child to predict what the water ‘says’ occasionally, being careful not to break the flow of the poem but modelling the expression and intonation of the piece.

Discuss the structure and repetition of the poem with your child. Discuss what they like/don’t like about the poem. Read through the poem together and decide where you might use actions, facial expressions or instruments. Begin to rehearse and then recite a verse of the poem, trying to add in actions, facial expressions or sound effects.

We would love if you could take a video and send us your performance!

There are many videos of poets performing their poems online if you’re looking for some inspiration: https://clpe.org.uk/poetryline/poet-videos

The children also love watching Michael Rosen’s poetry performance, such as Chocolate Cake and No Breathing in the Classroom.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7BxQLITdOOc

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1cfVQyrQ3Q

He also performs some children’s books such as We’re Going On A Bear Hunt.

Optional extension: Could you paint or draw your own water themed illustration to go with the poem? Think about how it makes you feel (your emotions) as you create!
