President's Column
On Sunday, February 24, I attended the memorial service for Zehava Eckstein-Sweet. In the evening, I attended the Youth Art & Talent Show produced by our young members of USY. Afterwards, the unusual combination of the two events brought some thoughts to my mind.
How wonderful it was that members and staff of our congregation could arrange a moving memorial service for a long-time member and assist her family; and ALSO sponsor a delightful program featuring the artistic and musical talents of our young people, in addition to providing a spaghetti dinner for the

My Dear Friends,This is my last article for
the FLAME as President of our synagogue. It has been my honor to serve the congregation over the past two years and it has been a wonderful experience. I have met and worshipped with you, watched your kids grow and blossom, and proudly saw them reach adulthood at their b’nai mitzvot.
I have so many people to thank. First and foremost, Geoff DeBoskey, our VP for Management, who has selflessly stepped up and assisted me on occasions too numerous to mention. I want to thank our dedicated Executive Director, Beryl Strauss, who has always provided extraordinary assistance. Cantor Ruth has been a wonderful spiritual adviser, and for that I am most grateful. Lastly, I want to thank former presidents Sandy Hartford and Faith Segal, who have always been there to provide advice and guidance.
It has been a pleasure working with our Board of Directors. Our staff, including Marian Rosen, Claire Gorfinkel, Theresa Brekan, Daniel
Platt , Rober t Brown, Alex Beck, and Robert Brown Jr., continue to do an amazing job, so often above and beyond their normal responsibilities. Rabbi Aimee Gerace, our Education Director, and Melissa Levy, our Youth
Director, provide a deeply enriching and inspirational experience for our kids. And, of course, our extraordinary volunteers continue to dedicate their time and energy in support of the synagogue. To all of these people, I am extraordinarily grateful.
And to our exceptionally generous donors, thank you so much for your support. You are crucial to insuring the financial sustainability of our synagogue.
Last, but certainly not least, I must thank you, our entire PJTC community, for all of your support over the last two years. You are my family and my friends and without you PJTC would not be the extraordinary place it is today.
Thank you again for all your support.
Sincerely, Jeff Landau, President, 2017-19

I am taking this o p p o r t u n i t y t o a c k n o w l e d g e a n d thank Bhavani Mann for creating a beautiful “Shabbat in the Round” service to celebrate our Sisterhood. The February 2 service was

And, yes, I share recipes, so if you would like the salad, orzo with roasted vegetables or Asian salmon recipe, just let me know.

by Aty Rotter, Sisterhood VP for Membership A big thank you to the women listed
below who made a commitment to our Sisterhood to join or renew at the Women of Valor membership level this year. Participation in Sisterhood is important for so many reasons. The Women of Valor realize how vital
their support is to the ongoing services we sponsor within our congregation and international organization, Women's League of Conservative Judaism. Our Women of Valor members are Marcia Alper, Ginny Blitz, Karen Hochman Brown, Judy Callahan, Nancy Carlton, Nancy Copeland, Sondra Dreshner, Susan Galpert, Debbie Guest, Francine Katz, Ellen Knell, Ricki Lane, Faye Langholz, Stacy Miller, Jan Pais, Aty Rotter, Lee Segal, Doris Segall, Jakki Sencer, Elizabeth Short, Alice Shulman, Debby Singer, Gail Snyder, Marcia Spira, Edie Taylor, Pearl Tyree and Louise Wannier. attendees. Our staff did not choose one event over the other. A family needed support and love, and it was provided. Our kids needed time to show their accomplishments, and time and assistance was provided.
This temple is a wonderful, caring community. Our members have varying needs, and those needs are met with compassion for those who need it, sharing with cheer those who provide us with joy and pride in their accomplishments.
I hope you attended one or both of these events. It proved to me once again that our staff and volunteers are there for us, no matter what the situation. I am grateful to be part of it all.

More on the MatchWe had three additional donors whose
generous gifts qualified them to be counted in our end-of-the year challenge match campaign. We weren’t able to include their names in the donor list published last month in The Flame, so here they are:
• David and Dana Bouton• Michael and Diane Burr• Jason and Bhavani MannThank you so very much for helping us raise
$15,450 toward the match. Because of the kind and thoughtful gifts of these PJTC
members and others who have given to the match campaign and to the Yom Kippur Appeal, we have now met our goal for the 2018-2019 Appeal. Balancing our budget is critical to our being able to keep dues at the lowest possible level while sustaining our synagogue. We love our donors!!!! Many thanks to you all.

Claire Gorfinkel’s Roots in the West and the Early History of Reform Judaism
March 12, 2019 - 12:30-2:00 PMWho will write my history? If not me, who? If not now,
when? Join Claire Gorfinkel, who will answer those questions in the
sixth of our monthly series of presentations where we explore, preserve, and create history about Jews in the Pasadena area. Our March 12 class will learn about Claire’s family’s journey that began in New Haven, Connecticut around 1860 with the arrival of her great-great-grandfather, who was a leader of the early Reform Movement in America. His daughter, Claire’s great-grandmother, became part of the early migration of Jews to the west. The presentation will include photographs and artifacts about Claire’s family history in New Haven and Virginia City, Nevada, before they settled in San Francisco at the end of the 19th century. Bring a brown bag dairy lunch. Dessert, coffee and tea will be provided.
Weizmann Day School: An Interfaith Shakespeare Celebration
Each year at this time Weizmann Day School’s middle school students begin to study Shakespeare. We are fortunate to have Ben Donenberg (father of two Weizmann alumni) in our community. Ben is the Founder and Executive Artistic Director of The Shakespeare Center of Los Angeles. For many years Ben has graciously donated his time to teach Weizmann middle school students about the Bard.
For Weizmann middle school students, the annual Shakespeare performance is a highlight of their time at Weizmann. Each year, middle school students perform an abridged version of one of Shakespeare’s plays. This year students will perform “As You Like It” at Weizmann on March 28 at both 11:00 AM and 6:00 PM. The performances last about one hour. They are free and open to the public. Please join us!
In addition, this year Weizmann students will be studying Shakespeare even further with their friends at New Horizon School, an Islamic K-8 school in Pasadena. Our students will travel to New Horizon for their production of “MacBeth,” and we hope to share our production of “As You Like It” with their students, too. The two schools also will meet in the spring to read Shakespeare sonnets before an audience of students, family, friends, and community. Watch for details – we hope that you will join us for this event as well!
Weizmann’s Mission: to provide an enriching education, rooted in Jewish traditions and values, which fosters critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, character and compassion.
To schedule a tour of our school, inquire about the school, or make a donation, please call the office at (626) 797-0204 or visit www.weizmann.net.

February Donations
You’ve undoubtedly seen the plaque in the Temple lobby on which the names of the Guardians are listed, but do you know what the Guardians do? They are generous PJTC members who make unrestricted gifts to the Temple, in excess of dues and building assessment, of at least $750 at any time within the
Temple’s fiscal year. Contrary to some misconceptions, the Guardians are not all long-time Temple members, nor are they all elderly, nor are they all rich. Many (like us) have been members for less than ten years, most are middle-aged, and almost all are middle-class working people who consider ensuring the financial well-being of the Temple to be one of their most important mitzvoth.
This year’s Guardians and their invited guests enjoyed a sumptuous catered dinner on January 19, just prior to the Shabbat Shirah concert featuring the Los Angeles Zimriyah. Over 100 people attended the dinner, which is a record for Guardian events in recent years. As the new Chairs of the Guardians, we are planning additional events for later in the year to recognize the generosity of our Temple’s special donors, including a possible brunch this spring and the traditional cocktail party between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
Approximately 40% of the Temple’s members contributed to the Yom Kippur Appeal last fall, and many more contributed to the matching gift challenge offered by PJTC members Doug and Keri Axel, Mickey and Lee Segal, Jon and Sarah Weisz and Alan and Sandy Whitman at the end of last year. Several Temple members are already close to $750 in unrestricted donations this year. We would be delighted to welcome those people, and all Temple members, to the Guardians if they can donate whatever it takes to get their unrestricted donations for this fiscal year, which ends on June 30, up to $750. But please don’t wait until June. We want to welcome incoming Temple President Geoff DeBoskey, and the new Board, with as financially stable a Temple as we can.
Only 32% of the Temple’s operating expenses are covered by dues; the Guardians' donations cover an additional 17% of those operating expenses. Approximately 16% of the Temple’s families are Guardians. In some past years, over 20% of the Temple’s families have been Guardians. We’d like to get membership back to that level. Those of you who attended the annual congregational meeting recently learned that, while the Temple’s P&L as of December 31, 2018 was healthier than budgeted, a significant shortfall is anticipated for this fiscal year. Please help close the gap by joining the Guardians in time to join all the future events planned.
