PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

After one of the longest and hardest winters in recent memory, the renewal of spring comes with a sense of relief and dare I say it, euphoria. When we first interviewed Rabbi Bitran and his family, many of us talked about Rochester’s weather. He passed it off without any concern. And while he remains an eternal optimist, I think even he has

wondered if it would ever end. So please help me reassure him and his family that this winter was an aberration. As the seasons begin to change, it is easy to be in awe of nature’s renewal. I hope you feel some of this with regards to our shul. We have spent many months creating a new kehilla (a sacred community). You have heard our leadership speak about bringing our community closer together by developing interpersonal relationships. This goal has been the lens through which all of our decisions are made. And we have been improving one step at a time. I hope that you have been able to personally experience this change. It may have been through a holiday event, a mitzvah you have been planning, a phone call you made or received or perhaps just being in the building on a busy weekend. And speaking of renewal, the leadership of your synagogue, the lay leaders and clergy together, have recently made a very difficult decision. A couple of months ago, we decided to change the direction of our Religious School. One of the most important issues facing our kehilla, our congregation, is to look at our Religious School education model and how it engages our students and their families. This is a tremendous challenge and will be a primary focus of our leadership for the foreseeable future. We felt that we needed to move in a different direction and have decided not to renew Susan Bernstein’s contract. To that end, we have decided to create a search committee, co-chaired by VP Lisa Silverstein and Youth Committee co-chair Susan Trumble, to find a new Education Director to fulfill this vision. We have already reached out to schools around the country that have experimented with different models. We have preliminarily considered creating a Youth/Family Education Director position. We believe that the experience and education about Judaism is best done with the entire family involved. This vision is being formed as I write this, and I encourage all of you to contact me at the email below with any thoughts you may have. The leadership of Temple Beth El would like to thank Susan Bernstein for her three years of hard and sometimes thankless work, which will conclude on June 30. Please join me for Shabbat Services and Kiddush on May 10th as we honor Susan. B’Shalom, Todd Stein [email protected]

NOTES FROM

OUR HAZZAN...

Elijah and the Seder We are told that at the Seder table of a great Chassidic rabbi,

one of his disciples was asked to open the door for Elijah.

When he returned from the open door, everyone noticed that the Chassid’s face was quite pale. When asked why he was so moved, the

Chassid responded, “When you open a door in the rebbe’s house, the

possibility is strong that Elijah will really come in, and I was afraid.”

The Rabbi heard these words and responded, “You don’t have to be afraid.

When Elijah will come in, he will come not through the door, but through

your heart." Why, of all the great prophets in Israel, was Elijah chosen as

our most important, albeit invisible, Seder guest? What, in our tradition,

associates him with Passover in coming not just through our doors, but

“through our hearts”?

The most obvious answer is historical. Elijah staked his life in the struggle

against idolatry in ancient Israel. The king and queen of Israel had betrayed

the faith of their fathers and had succeeded in establishing throughout the

land, the worship of the Canaanite fertility gods. Most of the true prophets

were slain by the king. But Elijah demonstrated a supreme courage and

zeal which designated him forever as forerunner of the Messiah, as one who would herald the redemption of all human kind. Thus, Passover, the

festival of Jewish freedom, is connected with Elijah, the prophet of

ultimate, universal freedom.

Yet there was another role which rabbis assigned to Elijah, less awesome,

but more human. The Bible says of Elijah that “he will turn the hearts of

the fathers to the children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers.”

Before the coming of Passover we read this verse as we prepare for the

celebration of the Seder, because the greatest of the responsibilities of

Elijah will be the reunion of families, the joining of husbands and wives, of

parents and children. In Jewish legend, it is Elijah who, under different

guises and always unrecognized, appears and reappears to reconcile those

whom bitterness had split asunder. It is in this role, even more so than as harbinger of Messianic times, that Elijah “enters our hearts.”

Passover is uniquely a family festival when grandparents, parents, children and relatives reenact ancient rituals and “eat history”. The first instructions

given to the people of Israel to observe the Passover Festival state: “It shall

come to pass when your children shall say unto you, ‘what mean you by

this Service’ and thou shalt tell the story to your children.” If the head of

the household is the King of the Seder, then the star of the performance is

the child. The whole test of that night, the Haggadah, is intended to build a

path way to a child’s heart.

In the midst of our concern for success and achievement on the personal

level, Judaism teaches us that there is a foundation upon which human life

itself either becomes blessed or loses its possibility for regeneration, and

that foundation is the family. We have the obligation and privilege to

communicate our heritage to our young, to respond to them, to share with

them the values so precious to us. Therefore, we hope for the coming of

Elijah because he is a symbol of the reconciliation of the generations.

When the generations understand each other, when the young are willing to

learn from the experience of their elders, and when elders are willing to

draw faith and hope from the enthusiasm and sincerity of the young, then indeed, will we have reached the age of fulfillment. Elijah’s presence

reminds us that redemption involves not merely leading people out of

slavery, but bringing people back to each other – of leading all gathered

around the Seder table back to the mutual love and appreciation which are

the dearest possessions of free men and women. May Elijah enter our

homes, but more important, may he enter our hearts.

Silvana, Ethan, Lara and I express our very best wishes for a joyous

Passover to each of you. May you and your loved ones share in the blessings of this season.

The first Pesach seder will be celebrated on

Monday evening, April 14th. The aisles at

Wegmans have been lined with Passover

provisions for weeks already. We continue to ask the

question, “Why is this night different from all other

nights?”

Why do we hide the afikoman and give gifts to the

children who find it?

In many ways children are the stars of the Seder night.

Jewish law states that the Seder should begin as soon after

nightfall as possible in order to insure the participation of

children. Various customs, including spreading nuts on

the table, exist specifically to arouse the curiosity of

children and to stimulate their active involvement.

Likewise, the hiding and seeking of the afikoman. The

annual afikoman hunt has a way of transforming even the

most bleary-eyed youngster into an exuberant Seder

participant. Like a child on the trail of the afikoman, we

too can see ourselves as seekers – for truth and meaning,

for the kind of fulfillment that lasts longer than a week

and for riches that transcend the material.

My wishes for a meaningful and rich Pesach to all.

CORNER

The movie “12 Years a Slave” took home three Academy

Awards on March 2nd, including “Best Picture.” The film

tells the true story of Solomon Northup, a free black man

living in Upstate New York who was kidnapped and sold into slavery

in 1841. He remained a slave for twelve years, enduring back-breaking

labor and horrific abuse. The film captures the atrocities of slavery:

harsh labor, physical pain, merciless beatings, sexual abuse, and

extreme degradation.

“In every generation all individuals should regard themselves as if they

personally went out of Egypt.”

This instruction from the Haggadah takes on a new resonance this year

after seeing “12 Years a Slave.” The experience of slavery in Egypt

plays a central role in Jewish tradition. During the seder, we point to

the matzah, the symbol of our slavery, and declare, “This is the bread

of our affliction.”

The Passover Seder centers around asking and answering questions.

The Haggadah leads us to wonder, “What was the nature of our

ancestors’ enslavement?” It provides two distinct answers.

“Avadim hayinu l’Paroh b’Mitzrayim/We were slaves to Pharaoh in

Egypt” declares the Haggadah. The answer is simple: enslavement is

physical. We had no freedom, no liberty. In Egypt there was harsh

labor, there were forced quotas, there were cruel beatings. Our infant

sons’ lives were at risk of being drowned in the Nile. We were slaves

until God’s miracles liberated us and we became a free nation.

The Haggadah provides another answer as well. “Mit’chila ovdei

avodah zarah/At first, our ancestors engaged in idol worship, but now

we are drawn nearer to God’s service.” We began as idolaters and only

later came to worship the One God. Enslavement does not need to be

physical; it can be spiritual as well. We can be enslaved to false ideals

and ideologies and meaningless values. We can lose our faith in ways

both large and small.

The Exodus from Egypt freed us from both types of slavery. Our

bodies were freed from the harshness of forced labor while our minds

and spirits were freed from the false beliefs of idolatry and brought to

realize and celebrate the existence of the One God. On Pesach, we

celebrate both liberations.

And yet, according to Jewish tradition, we are not meant to stop with

merely remembering the miracles of liberation. In the words of

Exodus 22:21, “You shall not mistreat a stranger, nor oppress him: for

you were strangers in the land of Egypt.” The reminders of the past are

meant to inspire present action.

May our Pesach celebrations remind us of the many ways that we are

free, point to the areas in our lives where we hope for liberation, and

sensitize us to the needs of all those around us.

PASSOVER INFORMATION

EREV PESAH SIYUM

The sunrise to sunset ta'anit (fast) bekhorim (of the firstborn), which occurs on the day before Passover, is the

only fast that applies to just a segment of the community: all males who are the firstborn children in their

families (if the firstborn child is female, the first son born after her is not obligated).

There is a widely practiced exemption: On the principle that fasting is prohibited on a joyous occasion,

Judaism allows for anyone who attends a religious feast to forego fasting. It is customary to hold a celebratory

meal on the completion of study of a tractate of rabbinic literature, called a siyyum (conclusion). So the sages

initiated the practice of studying the end of a tractate after morning services on Erev Pesah followed by a

celebratory meal.

At 7:00 am Monday, April 14th, the firstborn in each family is invited to the Siyum B’khorim. Following the

meal, there is an opportunity to burn your family’s remaining hametz in a bonfire in the TBE Garden.

IS IT KOSHER FOR PASSOVER?

Passover has its own special rules of kashrut. On Pesah, Jews are forbidden from owning or consuming hametz

(flour, food or drink made from the prohibited species of leavened grain: wheat, oats, barley, rye or spelt).

Most Ashkenazic authorities have added the following foods (kitniyot) to the above list: rice, corn, millet,

legumes (beans and peas; however, string beans are permitted). The Committee on Jewish Law and Standards

has ruled unanimously that peanuts and peanut oil are permissible. Sephardic authorities permit the use of all

of the above kitniyot.

PERMITTED FOODS:

A. The following foods require no kosher l’Pesah label when purchased before or during Passover: fresh fruits

and eggs, fresh fish (whole or gutted), fresh or frozen kosher meat other than chopped meat, whole (unground)

spices and nuts, including whole or half pecans (not pieces), pure black, green, or white tea leaves or teabags,

Nestea regular and decaffeinated unflavored tea, coffee (unflavored regular), baking soda and bicarbonate of

soda.

B. The following items may be purchased before Pesah without a Pesah hekhsher but if bought during Pesah

require a kosher l’Pesah label: white milk, 100% pure fruit juice, filleted fish, frozen fruit (with no additives),

pure white sugar (with no additive), olive oil (extra virgin only), non-iodized salt, quinoa (with no additional

ingredients).

C. The following products require reliable (“kosher l”pesah”) certification (regular rabbinic supervision is not

sufficient), whether purchased before or during Pesah: all baked goods (matzah, Pesah cakes, matzah flour,

farfel, matzfel meal, and any other products containing matzoh), herbal teas, canned tuna, wine, vinegar,

liquor, decaffeinated coffee and tea, dried fruits, oils, frozen uncooked vegetables and all frozen processed

foods, candy, chocolate-flavored milk, ice cream, yogurt, cheeses, butter, and soda. Any processed food

bought during Pesah must have a (“kosher l”Pesah”) certification.

D. Any detergents, cleaners, etc. which are not a foodstuff and which are not eaten, may be used for Pesah and

do not require a special label. These items include: isopropyl alcohol, aluminum products, ammonia, coffee

filters, baby oil, powder and ointment, bleach, charcoal, candles, contact paper, plastic cutlery, laundry and

dish detergent, fabric softener, oven cleaner, paper bags, plates, wax paper, plastic wrap, polish, sanitizers,

scouring pads, stain remover, and bottled water with no additives.

E. Medicines: Prescription medicines are permitted. Non-prescription pills and capsules are permitted, for

liquid medications, check with your rabbi.

koshering a kitchen, please visit: rabbinicalassembly.org/pesah-guide

BEDIKAT HAMETZ

One of the required holiday ceremonies is Bedikat Hametz, searching for leaven. On the night before the first

seder, Sunday, April 13th, we conduct a candle-lit search through our home to ensure that no hametz is still

present. It is a brief ceremony in which the entire family can and should participate.

1. Make sure that all hametz has been removed or locked away with the exception of what will be needed for

the morning.

2. Carefully hide some crumbs of bread. This is to insure that the blessing and the ceremony will not be

performed in vain.

3. Take a candle, a feather or brush, and a box or cloth for the crumbs, and recite this blessing:

Baruch Ata Adonai, Eloheynu Melekh haolam asher kidshanu b’mitzvotav v’tsivanu al biur hametz.

Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Ruler of the Universe, who has sanctified us with the commandments and

commanded us to remove all leaven.

4. Perform the search and gather up all the crumbs. Tie them in a bundle which will be burned the next

morning. Feel free to (safely) burn it on your own, or use the bonfire at Temple Beth El following morning

minyan.

5. Recite the following: All manner of leaven which is in my possession, that I have not seen or removed shall

be annulled and void of any ownership and considered as the dust of the earth. (The Aramaic for this can be

found in the front of your Haggadah.).

6. On Monday, April 14th, at or before 10:00 am, burn the leaven and recite the formula below:

All manner of leaven which is in my possession, that I have seen or not seen, that I have removed or not

removed, that I have destroyed or not destroyed shall be annulled and void of my ownership and considered as

the dust of the earth. (The Aramaic for this can be found in the front of your Haggadah.)

TO SELL YOUR HAMETZ

The Torah prohibits the ownership of hametz (flour, food or drink made from the prohibited species of

leavened grain: wheat, oats, barley, rye or spelt) during Pesah. Ideally we burn or remove all hametz from

our premises which may be effected by donations to a local food pantry. In some cases, however, this

would cause prohibitive financial loss. In such cases, we arrange for the sale of the hametz to a non-Jew

and its repurchase after Pesah. You can arrange for this sale of your Hametz by sending the following

form to Rabbi Bitran at the Temple office no later than Friday, April 11th.

It is customary to include a donation to provide Maot Hittin funds for Passover supplies for the needy.

Please make checks payable to Temple Beth El which will contribute to maot hittin on everyone’s behalf.

Spring is in the Air Don’t let the winter blues get you downlook ahead to the springhelp plan Temple Beth El’s new Community Garden.

Vegetables and flowers grown in our community garden will be distributed to the Jewish Family Service Food Cupboard, to Asbury Dining & Caring Center, and to the refugee resettlement family that members of our congregation will be working with.

The garden will be located at Temple Beth El and will be cared for by congregants, their family and friends, and clients of Jewish Family Service who ask for a way to give back to the community.

We are grateful to the Max and Marian Farash Foundation for providing the funding needed to establish the Temple Beth El Community Garden.

Please R.S.V.P. to the TBE Office at 473-1770 or [email protected].

Whether you have gardening expertise or not we need your help to:

• build raised garden beds • maintain a garden plot in the spring/summer

months • provide general maintenance of the garden • deliver produce to The Brighton Food Cupboard

and/or • Asbury Dining & Catering Center • Help plan Jewish educational programs relating to

agriculture and the Jewish responsibility to address hunger

• or be involved however you prefer
