Celebrating our 64th year Vol. 64 #6 February 2015—Shevat/Adar 5775
FROM THE RABBI’S STUDY…
Interdating and the Conservative Movement
During winter break at the end of December, nearly
800 USY (the high school youth group of the Con-
servative Movement) teenagers gathered in Atlanta for
its annual convention. The convention is an opportuni-
ty for USYers from across North America (and some from Latin
America and Israel) to celebrate their Jewish identity by studying,
praying and doing social action projects together. The USY conven-
tion is a terrific program and it shows the bright future in store for
Conservative Judaism.
However, this year the convention was marred by some controversy
that was reported by national Jewish media outlets. Conservative Ju-
daism always attempts to balance a desire to evolve and respond to
modernity while maintaining traditional values and adhering to hala-
cha – Jewish law. Conservative Judaism promotes the scientific study
of Jewish texts which involves modern, academic norms of research
while also maintaining a sense of obligation to follow the tenets of
Judaism. This is a difficult balance to maintain as evidenced by the
debate among the USYers about the standards that its officers should
maintain. The USY charter has said that the international officers
must keep kosher, observe Shabbat and date only Jews. An amend-
ment was proposed to eliminate the dating policy. That proposal
caused a firestorm of reaction by adults – leaders in the Conservative
Movement and outsiders – who saw this as the end of Conservative
Judaism. But this statement by my Rabbinical Assembly explains the
proposal: “USY teens at their International Convention reaffirmed
their commitment to indating, while restating that commitment in their
own positive language.” The change was from: "It is expected that
leaders of the organization will refrain from relationships which can
be construed as interdating" to "The Officers will strive to model
healthy Jewish dating choices. These include recognizing the im-
portance of dating within the Jewish community and treating each
person with the recognition that they [sic] were created Betzelem Elo-
him(in the image of God)."
The USYers cleverly restated the negative ban – the word refrain –
into a more positive statement of expected behavior. The new state-
ment motivates the youth to make positive Jewish choices and helps
motivate them as they develop and grow in their Jewish identity. I
applaud the USYers for their serious deliberation – the discussion and
vote on this lasted until 2:30 in the morning – and with this kind of
language I think the future is bright for Conservative Judaism. May
we be so moved by the USYers’ example to explore our relationship
to our Jewish heritage and to grow in our Jewish identity.
B’vracha – with blessing,
Rabbi Jonah Layman
FROM THE PRESIDENT:
As you know, I initially concentrated on the
construction of our building as project manager
and now my focus has shifted towards develop-
ing our new facility. In fact, you can often see
“the President” fixing or installing something
in the kitchen, bathrooms, storage rooms, or elsewhere
throughout the building. Our community moved into our
new home in August 2011 and now our Board is tasked
with addressing our needs for a reserve fund to ensure that
when any major maintenance challenges (roof, parking lot,
heater, etc.) or capital improvements (additional storage
area, banquet chairs, etc.) arise, Shaare Tefila will be more
than equipped to handle it.
As we use our facility, we find additional needs for en-
hancements, expansion, or planned but incomplete capital
campaign items. The construction utilized the majority of
our reserve funds and now we are planning on increasing
these funds.
As President of our congregation, I have directed the Ad-
ministrative Vice President and the Financial Vice President
and their committees to develop a Reserve Study, in which
we identify and estimate the cost of these major mainte-
nance and improvement items. The report will then be pre-
sented to the Board and then the congregation. We antici-
pate being able to fulfill these future funding needs through
budget surpluses, building fund donations, dedications,
bequests, and other monetary gifts. We hope the
congregation will go above and beyond in any means with
which they can participate in this process. To paraphrase
Dr. Seuss, a donation is a donation no matter how small.
In addition to donations and funding through program at-
tendance, the Finance Committee has been tasked with de-
veloping a program of planned giving by members as well
as friends and affiliates of the congregation. Under the
guidance of our immediate past president, David Ronis,
Shaare Tefila hopes to ensure our financial security for cur-
rent and future generations. As this process is still undergo-
ing its initial planning, if you want to include Shaare Tefila
in your estate or planned giving as we continue to develop
our formal program, please contact Jill Goldwater or myself
and we will be glad to assist you.
Hyman J. Grosberg, Shaare Tefila President

SISTERHOOD: By now you should have received a link to the Kiddush Volunteer list for 2015. Please make note of your date, team number and Kiddush Captain. You will also receive a reminder call from Florence Lipsky and an email reminder
from the office. If you are unable to attend on your assigned Saturday, please make arrangements for a substitute and no-tify your Captain. By all of us sharing in this volunteer re-sponsibility we are meeting many needs and saving our shul a great expense by not having to hire outside people. Please plan to arrive in the kitchen by 9:45 and plan on staying through clean up. Our heartfelt thanks go to Leon Green for assisting with the Excel spreadsheet and to Bob Freed-man and Jeff Winkler for making this list available on the synagogue website. Please join us on February 15 at Shaare Tefila, 9:30 when Sisterhood plays against the Men's Club in a spirited game of It's Academic. Join us for an egg-septional breakfast pri-or to the game, and that's no yolk! A nominal fee will be collected at the door. Come cheer on the peeps of your choice. Speaking of February 15, the mah jong program has been temporarily postponed. New dates to be arranged. Sisterhood Shabbat is June 13. If you would like to read Torah or participate in the service, please contact Fran Weiss. Parts are being assigned now so don't delay. Please consider a challenging role for this special Shabbat service. Stay tuned for information concerning our upcoming pro-grams such as the ever popular Women's Seder on March 22 and the Progressive Lunch on April 19. Please remember to buy scrip for your shopping needs. This is a great and painless fund-raiser for Shaare Tefila. The amount we raise for our shul depends on the amount of scrip that is sold. Purim and Passover are right around the corner. For the Zen part of our column, relax and close your eyes. What do you see for the future of Sisterhood? Do you see yourself in a strong leadership position? Or do you see nothing and the dwindling of Sisterhood? That vision is up to you. Our term will expire June 2016. Our future depends on you. Please contact us for more information. The following Kiddush Volunteer Teams will be helping in the kitchen on Shabbats in February, 2015.
See you then and thanks for your volunteer efforts!!! SOS - Save Our Sisterhood

Did You Know…?
Val & Ira Kolmaister have returned from a visit with family in Florida.. Cathy & Lanny Plotkin went to Florida
also. Over the Christmas holiday, Audrey & Bob Haber took their son, Seth, daughter-in-law, Pam, and granddaughter, Morgan, on an 8 night cruise on The Independence of the Seas from Fort Lauderdale to St. Martin, St. Kitts, Puerto Rico, and Royal Caribbean’s private island at Labadee, Hai-ti. They surprised Morgan with a “Barbie Experience” on board. She was given a Barbie doll, pillow case, blanket, and much more. She participated in the special events and even modeled in the fashion show. Audrey and Bob are seasoned cruisers but this was the first time for their fami-ly. A good time was had by all. Please write me of any events, achievements, or occa-sions that your family has had that you wish to share with the congregation. I’ll even print funny stories if you submit them. Please remember, if a family mem-
ber or another congregant is hos-

THE ROSE & GEORGE TELLER PRE-SCHOOL,
Gates of Discovery The Role of the Teacher in Our Classrooms
One of the misconceptions about the Reggio ap-proach is that the teachers just follow the whims of the chil-dren, basically abandoning all decision making to the chil-dren. While it is imperative that we become skilled observ-ers of children and use these observations to inform the cur-riculum planning and implementation, there is a reason that we have 2 adults in each classroom. The teachers must de-cide what is worthy of classroom time, how to explore dif-ferent topics or materials and what the learning goals are for the class. In addition, the lessons should be representative of our values as a school. And we always look for ways to promote Jewish values and practices. The teacher's role within the Reggio Emilia approach is complex. The teacher is considered a co-learner and collabo-rator with the child and not just an instructor. The role of the teacher is first and foremost to be that of a learner alongside the children. The teacher is a teacher-researcher, a resource and guide as she lends expertise to the efforts of the stu-dents. Teachers are encouraged to facilitate the child's learn-ing by planning activities and lessons based on the child's interests, asking questions to further understanding, and ac-tively engaging in the activities alongside the child, instead of sitting back and observing the child learning. While working on projects with the children, the teacher can also expand the children's learning by collecting data that can be reviewed at a later time. The teacher needs to maintain an active, mutual participation in the activity to help ensure that the child clearly understands what is being learned. One of the hardest decisions is knowing when to ask a question or suggest a direction and when to leave the children to their own thoughts. Within such a teacher-researcher role, educators carefully listen, observe and document children's work and the growth of community in their classroom and are to provoke, co-construct, and stimulate thinking and children's collaboration with peers. Teachers are committed to reflection about their own teaching and learning. The teacher is also intent upon learning about each child, not just what is typical of 2-, 3- or 4-year-olds. The teacher in Reggio Emilia is the researcher, the data gatherer, the learner, and the strategic contributor to the child's capacity to learn. The responsibility is on the community of teachers to provide the contexts for learning. For our staff meeting this month, the teachers and I read a wonderful article titled, “My Nose is as Full as the World: Exploring the Smells of the City.” In this article, the teach-ers of a class of 4- and 5-year olds in Reggio Emilia, Italy, recount an exploration that they undertook over the course of a school year. The class was participating in a city-wide celebration of Gianni Rodari’s book, The Grammar of Fantasy, which he had dedicated to Reggio Emilia. In his book, Rodari ex-plores values cherished by (cont. on P. 4, Preschool)
Chavaya Twenty Chavaya students and their parents spent a recent morning at the Jewish Museum of Maryland in Baltimore. We toured the his-
toric synagogue which was converted to a church for a brief time. In the basement we found a matzo oven and two mikvehs: one for community members and one for dishes. Our younger students explored the exhibit “Voices of Lombard Street” and our older students loved the “Amazing Mendez” exhibit. Families are en-couraged to visit on their own and learn more about Jewish life in Maryland at the turn of the last century.
February at Chavaya brings great happenings. Our K-2 parents are invited to join us on February 8th for Tefila, Purim songs, and to make a grogger with us. February 15 is our parent program for 3rd-5th grad-ers. Morah Elana’s class studies Jewish Heroes. We will share our favorite heroes’ accomplishments. We also invite parents to join us for Tefila. We pray loudly and competently each Sunday morning. Lastly, we will showcase our Hebrew component, “Hebrew Through Movement,” with a brief demonstration. February 15th is International Childhood Cancer Awareness Day. We invite students to wear pajamas and donate $1 to this cause. All tzedakah collected that morning will be donated to ACCO. All students reading the Megillah will meet with Cantor Wendi during this month to practice their vers-es. Teens will meet with the Cantor on February 8 and students in third – seventh classes will meet on Febru-ary 22. If your child will not be in school on those dates, please contact the Cantor to set an alternate time to read. (cont. on P 4 Chavaya)

What happened to our ISRAELI FLAG BANNER?
There have been a few inquiries regarding our outdoor banner that
shows support for Israel.
The flag is safe and sound and inside the building for the winter.
The clasps that we bought for use with the bungee cords were not
holding up to the constant wind pressure and we were worried that
the banner might blow away. We decided to take it down and are
hoping to find the right kind of equipment that will help keep our
banner safe and secure.
If anyone has knowledge of what we need, please feel free to con-
tact me. Spring will be here soon and hopefully we will resolve this
issue before long!
Cathy and Lanny Plotkin
(cont. from P. 3, Preschool) the school, such as transfor-mation¸ creativity, marvel joy and a sense of humor. These values have been key to the success of the schools, but in this project, they wanted to create a closer relationship between creativity, transfor-mation and the city itself. This particular class focused on one street of the city, via Farini. As is often the case, this project began with a con-versation. The teachers began this conversation by asking the children what they knew about streets and then taking a trip to explore via Farini. By listening to the answers the children gave during their discussion, as well as the dia-logues as the students walked along the street, the teachers realized that their students were especially drawn to the smells of the street, which included a bakery, but also a sig-nificant amount of trash. So they decided to create a smell-based representation of the street. They then gave the chil-dren an opportunity to identify and decide how to represent the smells. Note the distinction between the work of the teachers and that of the students. The teachers decided which values should be represented, which street they would explore and finally, based on their observations and documentation of the children’s initial interaction with the subject, the way it would be represented. The children then, within these con-straints, had free rein to proceed as their interests dictated.
(cont. from P.3, Chavaya) On February 22, Teens will tour the Dennis & Phil-ip Ratner museum in Bethesda. This local gem show-cases the drawing, painting, graphics and sculptures of Philip Ratner. March 1st is our Purim Carnival. Students wear costumes and classes end at 11:30 that morning. The carnival is a great opportunity to volunteer and get to know other Shaare Tefila members. Aviva Janus, Education Director
To create an environment with this balance of teacher and student directed components is very time consuming and complex. Teachers must be ready to respond to whatever direction the children choose, not just the one they pick. They regularly visit each other’s classrooms and provide a fresh eye for further observation. Teachers also meet week-ly with me, our Pedagogista and Atelierista, to plan and co-ordinate all classroom and studio activities. Although the work to create these learning opportunities is large, we all agree that the wonder and excitement created in the class-rooms is worth it! Beth Adler, Early Education Director

Membership Seems like we were just wishing each other Happy New Year, and then we turn around and it’s February. Where did the month of January go? Well at ST, Janu-
ary offered many wonderful programs from our Well-ness/Health series to the Comedy Night. Special thanks to Cathy Plotkin (Programming VP) and Lisa Arber (Special Program Director) for bringing in nu-tritionist Elizabeth Bloomberg who did a wonderful 3 part series on Wellness. Many Shaare Tefila congre-gants and friends of Shaare Tefila came out to learn tips on physical, emotional and spiritual well being. It was great seeing familiar ST faces and new faces coming from outside our community to learn about important topics such as “How to jumpstart your Me-tabolism, Food Addiction, and Nutrition and Stress.” Shaare Tefila also hosted a wonderful evening of entertainment at its Night of Sweet Laughter 4 Come-dy Night on Saturday January 31. Our social hall was sold out again and Shaare Tefila-ites and guests enjoyed stand up acts by our own in house comedian, Jeff Hysen, as well as featured comedian Brett Leake and Irwin Lorwin of Kalaidescope Enterprises. Pic-tures of Comedy Night and fundraising numbers will be posted in our upcoming March Shofar. Many thanks to all of you who attended our wonderful fundraiser and the friends, co-workers and family members you invited to share in this great evening of fun and laughter. Please join the Shaare Tefila Membership commit-tee as they host and honor our new members of 2015 at this month’s Shabbat Alive Program and monthly Shabbat dinner, Friday, February 20, 2015. Services begin at 6:30pm with dinner following promptly at 7:15 pm. Make your reservations online thru ST ChaverWeb or email or phone Julie Mintz ([email protected]; 301-593-3410) Your at-tendance at dinner will help welcome our new mem-bers to our community and help you meet our great new members. Just think in just 8 weeks Spring will be here and the Passover holiday (April 3- 11, 2015) will be cele-brated. Shaare Tefila members have always been known for caring for one another and connecting at special times, especially during the holidays. During this time of year we want to ensure that all members of our congregation who want to participate in a Passover Seder be afforded that opportunity. To participate as a Guest or Host, please email Cilla Grosberg at [email protected], or call 301-384-8788.
Your email should include your name, contact infor-mation (email, telephone number), and a note wheth-er you are a guest or host. If host, list how many guests you can seat and which night you can host (1st or 2nd night.) Also note whether you keep Kosher, or Kosher style. Guests should also list which night they need to be hosted and any dietary concerns. Passover Partners Program is brought to you by Shaare Tefila Membership Committee. Keep coming out and supporting ST great pro-grams…we truly are so fortunate to have each other. Share your great experiences with others who may be searching for a warm and welcoming synagogue as ours. You are Shaare Tefila’s best form of advertis-ing and as I have said many times before, all of us at Shaare Tefila are on the Membership committee. Thank you for all you do to help bring in new mem-bers and raise funds for your ST community. Shalom and Best always, Cilla B. Grosberg, Membership VP
