FROM THE PRESIDENT - Teresa Weiner

What draws you inside our synagogue building… Shabbat? Education activities? Life cycle events? Counseling? Social gatherings? Kaddish? Gift Shop? Tikun Olam projects? Meetings? Holiday observances? Library? The Building Committee’s hours of contemplation of space and its use have confirmed that all these opportunities for gathering to pray, learn, celebrate, study, mourn, laugh, serve, listen, share, reflect, discuss, and of course eat are vital to the life of our community. Extreme care has been taken in planning for the best possible use of space for all these activities in a bigger and better building. The building’s purchase has not been finalized as of this writing, but anticipation and optimism are high. A pat on the back to those among us who have returned questionnaires, served on committees, attended congregational meetings, asked important questions, and of course, made the possibility of purchasing and remodeling a building closer to a reality by pledging money as generously as individual household budgets allow. While only half of us have pledged so far, I remain hopeful that those of us who have not done so yet will do so soon. Just as I hope that you are drawn in to participation in our communal activities, I hope that you will participate funding the brick-and-mortar that houses these activities.

10 Deep breaths 9 Wintry paths around the lake and through the woods 8 Days to awaken to the boundless nature of being present 7 Nights to enjoy peace of mind 6 Hanukkah candles on the first night of the retreat 5 Rhythms to dance with 4 Sources of wisdom: Zoharic, Hasidic, Zen, Dzogchen 3 Amazing teachers to guide you 2 Hours from NYC by train—an easy trip! 1 Month left to sign up for a wonderful gift . . .

Many people in our congregation have interests that the rest of us would be interested in hearing about. If you, a family member, or a friend have a profession or an interest that you would be willing to share with the congregation as an oneg Shabbat program or a Sunday morning program please email Kathy Jacobs at [email protected].

ADULT EDUCATION

Just a note to say thank you to all who participated in our 4th Wednesday Free Lunch. I was absolutely stunned (and delighted) by the number of excellent volunteers who showed up. We actually had difficulty finding enough jobs for the many who came. Many hands made for light work and there were many compliments on the 128 meals which we served. My thanks again to all who responded on such short notice. It was a very special reminder to me that there is a wonderful community, who stand behind this work, who are willing to respond when needed. I was deeply moved by the demonstration.

FREE LUNCH THANKS - Dave Caplan

FEELING HOLIDAY STRESS?? Please stop briefly and picture how this is amplified for local families in emergency situations. Common Fund giving has fallen off recently; we may not reach last year’s total. Economic difficulty for all! However, without help from the Common Fund, a young couple who just had a baby could have had their water turned off; a mother and father of four children who have had unexpected health problems could have had their electricity disconnected; and a single father of two who lost his job and is currently living on a small unemployment benefit could have had his water disconnected. Many needs are turned away but these folks were helped, thanks to you and your generosity! Donations: CRC, designated “Common Fund”, PO Box 2025, Iowa City, IA 52244-2025

CHANUKAH BLESSINGS

The first night of Chanukah is December 20th, so make sure you’re ready—we are! We have all the necessities,

and invite you to come and shop whenever the Synagogue is open, Monday—Thursday 9:00—5:00. Since Sunday

School is not held at the Synagogue again this year, Sunday shopping isn’t as convenient as it has been, but I will

be more than happy to meet you there in the afternoons of Sunday, December 4th and 11th, if you’ll just let me

know that you’re interested. I’ll be gone the weekend of the 18th. Also remember that there’s still time to call

with a request for something you’ve seen and would like to order if you do it soon. We aim to please!

Save the Date Sisterhood Winter Party, Sunday, January 8, 2012. Sisterhood Shabbat, Friday, March 23, 2012.

With great help from our youth, Jody Braverman’s arrangement for the Table to Table van and the generosity of the congregation, we collected 577 pounds of food and necessary items for the Crisis Center food bank during the High Holidays. Volunteers are now needed to staff the information desk at Mercy Hospital during Christmas Eve and day. This allows Mercy’s volunteers to be with their families for the holiday. We also need people to help monitor bins at various locations where donations are collected for the Iowa City Animal Shelter during the month of December. The items are to be taken to the shelter. Please contact Jeanne Cadoret at [email protected], 624-2746 to help with these needs. Plans are under way for Mitzvah Day 2012, which is scheduled for April 15. Fundraising to finance the project is a big part of this and the plans will be announced soon.

Recently Sisterhood members and our extended group of friends have delivered over two dozen afghans to Habitat for Humanity, Shelter House, and other local groups that help the needy. Thanks to so many who made squares and connected them. But HELP! We have that many again at various stages of completion, and as the weather gets chilly, I am ambitious to deliver more. We need HELP to assemble the next two dozen – many of them already in various stages of completion. I'd like to deliver more in mid-November and mid-December. It’s a busy time, but this is when something warm and fuzzy is needed most. The next two meetings are December 4, and December 18, both at 10:15 to noon, both at Hillel. There will be assembly parties, so please bring afghans that you’ve been working on and we'll get them finished off. Or, come and get expert HELP to start a new one and learn to do something you’ve never done before.
