Women in Science and Technology Training

• In the Paris Region, only 37% of girls opt for a scientific degree.

Employment in the university sector• In 2005, 34% of researchers were women, this

percentage is slowly increasing.

Employment in the private sector• In private research, 20% of researchers and

29% of technicians were women.

Entrepreneurship• Women account for 27% of all entrepreneurs.

In IdF region only 1 company out of 4 is created by a woman.

• There are 3 types of brakes : prejudice and culture, working environment and career

• “the glass ceiling” is at work

Initiatives : • The regional action plan in apprenticeship on

the agreement for equality between girls and boys on issues such as gender-related images of the self and the professions.

Exhibitions « L’apprentissage au féminin ». (Woman in apprenticeship).

• Companies or professional groups (Metallurgy Industry and Employment Union, Building Federation) are looking to recruit more women.

• Associations including « Femmes&Sciences » (Women and Science) and the Association for equality in science and technology jobs.

Entrepreneurship and access to financing

• Women account for 29% of entrepreneurs in the IdF region.

• Mainly in the service sector (79,5%) with local customers.

• Half of it are small limited-liability companies.

Private life and access to financing• 14,9% of women against 28,9% of men

declared they had the support of their partner whilst creating their business.

Social economy and access to financing

• The social and solidarity economy accounts for 374,000 jobs (men or women)

Initiatives: • France business Angels facilitate the

financing for the creation of a business.

• IRFED EUROPE offers assistance/training modules to unemployed migrant women who want to create their own businesses in order to return to work.

• France Active Île-de-France manages the FGIF (i.e. financial guarantee scheme for female entrepreneurs) implemented by the Regional Delegation for Women's Rights : local network, financial support for jobs in solidarity economy.

• L'Atelier - an Île-de-France social and solidarity economy resource centre is open to all (both men and women).

Career development and job security• 36.1% of women in the Île-de-France region work

in the public sector, compared to 20.8% of their male counterparts.

• Especially in the fields of education, health, social welfare and public administration(75%).

• In the administrative authorities, four times as many women than men work part-time

• Health and well-being• Women account for 58% of cases of musculo-

skeletal disorders (MSD). Abilities and skills development

• Women pinpoint abilities considered as being typically female (multi-tasks 78%).

• But there is a « glass ceiling » for management jobs.

Work-home life balance• More than 62% of regional officials on parental

leave are women. Pay gap

• The wage differential or gender pay gap was of 12,8% in the ile de France regional civil service in 2007.

Initiatives : • On January 13, 2011, a bill related to the

equal representation of women and men on Boards of Directors and Supervisory Boards and to equal access to employment was passed by the French National Assembly.

• At the Île-de-France Regional Council, financial assistance for childcare is available to officials who work staggered hours up to 70% refundable.

• Nationally, the law dated 23/03/2006 calls for the elimination of pay gap between women and men within five years.

• The "Equal Access to Employment Seal of Approval" (“Label Egalité professionnelle”) issued by AFNOR has been recognised as a sign of "best practice" by the European Commission since April 2010.
