Central questions: paper proposal

– Problem statement: Is the topic adequately placed within a framework of societal and theoretical relevance?

– Theoretical framework: is adequate indication provided of the theoretical basis (e.g. framework, models, concepts, hypotheses) of the paper provided?

– Is indication provided as to how the paper will be focused and restricted in scope (e.g. specific instance, case study)?

– If the study involves empirical research, is sufficient indication provided of data collection and analysis procedures?

– Are any special concerns adequately presented (e.g. accessibility of resources / data, aspects of collaboration)?

– Is the proposal clearly organized and composed?

– Is indication provided of relevant literature to the topic, prepared in an acceptable academic style?

Group 1: Proposals

Saša Burnić Therefore, we will try through the theoretical conceptualization of the basic terms and concepts to answer the question "whether the specifics of the online environment affect the design of idealized self presentation of the individuals within that environment, and how?

The theoretical part will complement the various conceptions of the concept of new media, which I will try to find 1. by various online publications and 2. through digital libraries, Mendeley-a and the like. Theoretical work will be followed by a brief empirical part, a showcase for various studies that have this issue already addressed.

Group 1: Proposals

Barbara DrnovšekIs there still a need for public broadcasting services (PBS), what is the state of PBS right now and what does the future hold for them is what I am interested in. My research question therefore is: What changes would be the most beneficial in the quest to preserve the PSB in the new media era?

Matej FickoAll these trends contribute to the fact that online news media are on constant pressure to deliver 24/7 more content to the online audience than they are able to produce it by themselves.

What is the relation between self produced celebrity news and preprepared materials in online news media?

...already dealing with some topics in my diploma so I have already collected some references. But to go deeper regarding my research question I will use digital libraries such as Mendeley and Sage and consult professors who have been researching this topics.

Group 1: Proposals

Greti GrudenResearch questions: What role did new media play in the case of world economic crisis? Did institutions communicate/organise digital citizenship with the public through new media? How did the public respond?

In order to get relevant information I will use different databases (DiKUL, Sage Journals, JSTOR, Emerald, Mendeley etc.)…. I will also use new media, Twitter, Fb, Youtube in order to get useful information.

Karmen Hrovat…my focus will be on audience and their behavior according to their engagement in online environment. My framework theme will be identity exploration and construction and especially how is social networking environments utilized for exploring self identity. My main focus will be on user’s identity and how do they present themselves on social networks such as Facebook.…research question is how social networks influence the formulation of individual identity and how individuals represent themselves online.

I will also try to find other valuable data that are accessible via Internet.

Group 1: ToolsKarmen HrovatUntil now I was using digital libraries (DiKUL) and I was searching sources from a wide variety of sites, such as Google Scholar, SAGE, EBSCO, JSTOR etc. But I never used any of the reference management tools that are available. I’ve never even been aware of them. …. I checked a few of them, which are on the list, but at the end I chose Mendeley.

Greti GrudenFinally Mendalay started to function properly and I have to say that I did not know that programs sush as Mandeley were available. It is easy to add citations and follow your work by using Mendalay which is in my opinion very user friendly (with the exception that my computer froze several times in the row).

Matej FickoI liked the experience on Mendeley because it does not offer only articles, Mendeley desktop and a good user experience but it has also social experience compared to for example Sage (features of Dashboard and adding people as your colleagues). Though to get the full insight into this features it would take more time to add people and get some additional information and ideas through Dashboard.

Peter JenkoThe fundamental and basic question of my research paper is: Why we share digital media for free? What influences the act of sharing one’s own digital product via the internet free of charge, in unlimited use through the broader concepts of gift economy and the enhancement of social capital?

The dependable variable is: the act of free of charge sharing of one’s own digital product via the Internet; the independent variable are:....

H1: The wish of the individual for self-promotion has an impact on the act of free of charge sharing of one’s own digital product via the Internet.H2: The wish of the individual for a feedback regarding his digital product has a positive effect on the free of charge sharing of one’s own digital product via the Internet.

Lea LebarIn my paper I will contend that both sides in this debate are creating a false dichotomy. …I will conclude that online discussion forums can be designed in different ways and some of them can facilitate deliberation.

By studying the literature I will try to examine what are the factors that are facilitating deliberation.

Timea LukacsHow did new media shape the global dimension of community? How were these communities, like upgraded software reinvented/ refreshed?

... my paper looks into the history of new media as it is introduced on the market to families and communities.

I will be using different databases like Sage Journals and Mendeley. Also I will be looking into online newspapers, magazines and community blogs for recent facts and information.

Jordan MerrittsAre these videos meant to grant society a better understanding of the conflicts? Do these videos romanticize combat? Are these videos capturing ethical behavior? Do these videos captured via citizen/troop journalism present U.S. troops in a positive light?

I would like to examine how new media presents U.S. Marines and soldiers in current conflicts.

Thus, my research question seeks to answer the question: What defines the relationship between the new media and the U.S. combative presence in the Middle East?

Annika Maigaard MogensenResearch question: What does the discourse of a ”web 2.0”/ ”twitter”/ ”facebook” - revolution in the Middle East refer to? Has such a revolution actually taken place in the Middle East? Is it possible to change the world over Twitter?

I will use sources from the Western media reflecting on the phenomenen of ”twitter revolution”, but also I will use scholars' view on this phenomenen.

Page 20: Presentation, nj, meeting4, discussion session, 17 march2011

Group 2: ToolsJordan Merritts…this is the first time I attempted to use anything like EndNote, RefWorks, etc. It was easy to register and set up the Add to Connotea link button, but it seems users are very limited in adding articles and videos to my library. Overall, I have not found Connotea to be easy to use. …I will use JSTOR and “My Favorites” until I get it figured out!

Timea LukacsI chose Mendeley as it is a free research management tool for desktop and web. With little effort and time I could sign up and download the new service for testing. I really liked that I could easily find and import relevant papers based on my research subject;

Lea LebarFrom the Wikipedia overview I chose Zotero and Mendeley. While testing Zotero I noticed that the extension for Google Chrome which I use is still in beta version (though Zotero worked great in Mozilla Firefox) so I decided to go with Mendeley also because it seemed more user-friendly. Zotero also offers desktop version of the software, but I had problems with synchronizing the data online and on my desktop (which can also be result of lack of experience with these types of software).Mendeley on the other hand worked nicely, but I did not like the bookmark idea for importing citations mainly as I always lack space in my bookmarks row.

Matej MolekI will be dealing with and investigating every day more popular and important role and use of blogs in the field of amateur photography production and representation; advent of Web 2.0/new media forms/digitalization has namely altered contemporary photographic practices/processes.

Main research question will be: “Is digitalization of photographic practices and photo blogging leading to formation of new photographic expression/representation practices and democratization of photographic sphere?”

Strategy for gathering information will include different weblog and (amateur) photography theory search, its analysis and collection of relevant authors, useful sources and needed data.

Ivana Naceva

In my paper I will examine the use of social media from a different perspective, presenting it as a tool for organized violence and strengthening conflict between opposing parties. I will use the recent violent inter-ethnic incident involving mass fighting in Skopje, Macedonia, as an example on which the theoretical part of the paper will be elaborated.

...I will try to answer how effective are social mediums in organizing conflict and violent actions?

Ana ResnikThe intention behind this paper is to gain insight into the matter of online advertising, to present some of the possibilities internet offers in the field of advertising and also to look into the problematic issues online advertising causes (ethically challenged ad methods). However the main problem the paper wants to address is the measuring of online advertising efficiency. The research question of the paper is: Is online advertising efficiency measurable? The hypothesis:Some methods of online advertising are more efficient than others. Some methods of online advertising are more measurable in concern to efficiency than others.

Tamara ŽgajnarThe focus of my research paper will be if, and if they are, in what way, new media are so revolutionary as they are lately believed to be or not.

In my research I plan to focus on a specific field in which new media are widely used – marketing – and see how these new media have been used and if they can be described as revolutionary also in the field of marketing.

My research question will therefore be: Is, and if it is in what way, marketing and the way it works changing due to new media?

I found Twitter especially useful for connecting with professionals from whichever field you are interested in and gathering useful information also this way.

Page 27: Presentation, nj, meeting4, discussion session, 17 march2011

Group 3: Proposals

Gregor RebernikThe main effort of our research will be directed in theoretical potential of web citizen journalism, but this will also require an upgrade in practical investigation. The research question therefore is:

Can citizen journalism be a surrogate for traditional media’s fact based accountability news or as Jones (2009) puts it – the iron core of journalism, the essential component of democracy?

Featured or/and potential literature:[much]

17 March 2011 Ljubljana 2011: Meeting 4 27

Page 28: Presentation, nj, meeting4, discussion session, 17 march2011

Group 3: ToolsTamara ŽgajnarEven though I have heard of Mendeley before, I have never used it. Before you can start using all the features Mendeley is offering you have to register. This process was fast and easy –

With the use of Mendeley I prepared the following list of possible references for my paper: boyd, Danah m. and Ellison, Nicole B. 2008. Social Network Sites: Definition, History, and Scholarship. Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, 13. Available on: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1083-6101.2007.00393.x/pdf

Ana ResnikCiteulike caught my attention with its connection to Springerverlag. It looked easy enough to handle, but slowly problems started to show. Therefore I am extremely sceptical about using this tool. It is not easy as pie, although one might imagine it is. In my opinion the biggest problems are:-overriding the initial internet page-information has to be inserted manually -it doesn’t safe PDF formats-it doesn’t support Slovene alphabetThe problems definitely destroy the user experience.17 March 2011 Ljubljana 2011: Meeting 4 28
