floor joists were recycled as stair treads

fire doors and other no longer functional objects served as inspiration for furniture

    and works of art

Rough materials from the old building (ex: floors and tin fire doors) are contrasted

with new, smoother materials (drywall, MDF and steel).

    Inspiration: Human experience of

moving through space in sites industrialbuildings

Each major threshold is marked by a

    shroud, a vernacular doorway form

found in many of the sites industrial

    buildings.

Visitors enter through the shroud and

    experience successively increasing

ceiling heights until a soaring two-story

    volume is revealed.

    Programmatic elements are articulated

as objects placed within the factory-like

    volumes of the building.

The grand stair acts as a conveyance system, similar to those found throughout the plant.

At the second level the stair takes on circular form, a detail that draws from the delicate steel

stairs that circle the upper levels of the blast furnaces and pays homage to the steelworkers

experience of moving vertically through the plant.

    exterior is oriented

    along an east-west axis

    to stand toe-to-toe with

    the now silent blast

    DESIGN

    24/26

The building takes its cues from authentic materials that speak to the history of the place andembracing an economy and function consistent with the industrial typology of Bethlehem Steel.

The building is wrapped with locally manufactured pre-cast concrete panels, which are mounted

with their rough, handscreed surface facing outward.

The panels celebrate both the process and the people that produced them by revealing the

    marks of their production.
