Grace and Peace,

This month as we celebrate Thanks-giving, we wanted to take a moment, not only to thank God, but to than you for your support of The Praise Reporter. Your responses and support confirms the hand of God on this work and the encourage-ment to move forward into the things that God has ordained for 2009 and 2010. Last month, we unveiled our Preview edition in North Florida. We attended the Black Expo in Jacksonville, Florida and shared the Praise Reporter with the south. The response was overwhelming. They loved it! The monthly publishing launch will be in January with our Martin Luther King Edition.

Very soon, within the next 4 weeks, we will begin broadcasting online at 247PraiseRadio.com. What does this mean? We are repositioning ourselves as a

multimedia entity and will be able to have our readers hear great gospel music, news, and preaching/teach-ing on line and on demand. Though in Columbus and other major cities there is either an AM or FM Gospel station, many cities may only have gospel on Sundays for a few hours or worse, no station at all. We want to be available to meet this need and very shortly will.

I would like to Celebrate the Min-istry of Bishop Howard Tillman and Pastor Charles Dobbins. New Covenant Believer’s Church is Celebrating its 20th year this month and New Seasons Chris-tian Ministry is celebrating its 2nd year. BRAVO!

Finally, we would like to honor Pamela Ann Thornton who went on to be with the Lord in October. We worked with Pam at Purpose Magazine and The Columbus Post. In addition to recognizing her as a super hard working Journalist and editor, Pam was most known for being a woman of faith … a true Woman of God. To Pam, we will miss you, however we understand that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. Enjoy His presence, you deserve the live in His rest.

Happy Thanksgiving. Enjoy God. Enjoy your families.

Galatians 6:99 And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.

Mission StatementTo edify, empower and encourage people that have yet to tap into their full poten-tial and help them realize their purpose so that they can ultimately reach their physi-cal, spiritual and financial destiny.

Vision StatementNew Season Christian Ministries is a Christian-based ministry that has been called and ordained by GOD. We have been anointed and appointed by GOD to guide His people to their place of peace and prosperity both in soul and in spirit. For His Word declares “let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” (Gal. 6:9) We have been chosen to be his ambassadors here on earth so that we can fulfill the three-fold call on this ministry – to Edify, Empower and En-courage people that have been victimized by spiritual wickedness in high places. We will overcome by the word of our testimony, we will be victorious, we will have what we say – it is Now Time at New Season.

Start of MinistryPastor Charles M. Dobbins Jr. began his ministry at First Pentecostal Philadelphia As-semblies which was later renamed to Imani Christian Church. During his time there, he and his family were faithful members and he was ordained as a minister in 1996. As time went on he was ordained as an elder in 1999 and became one of the ad-ministrator of the Imani Bible Institute. He later became the Associate Pastor of Imani Christian Church in 2002 and served as Pastor in 2003. The church grew and Pastor Dobbins knew that God had a greater calling on his life. After being released to further enhance the ministry call on his life, Pastor Dobbins and First Lady Carmen were joined with the wonderful ministry under the leadership of Apostle Roderick and Prophetess Taketa Williams at United Ministries Church where they were faithful members. Here Pastor and First Lady Carmen received much direction and teach-ing to prepare them for the work of the ministry at hand. On November 11, 2007, Pastor Dobbins was ordained and released by Apostle & Prophetess Williams to a new level of ministry in God. He began his pastoral call at New Season Christian Ministries at Alcott Elementary School in Westerville, Ohio and remained there until God placed it on his heart to seek out a new place of worship. On June 1, 2008 New Season Christian Ministries moved to its current location at 6481 Tussic Road in West-erville, Ohio.

In this new season, souls are being saved, people are being healed and the word of God is setting people free.

In life it is difficult to say goodbye to a spouse, loved one or friend. That is why with the deepest regret the Columbus Post News-paper and many people across Central Ohio mourn the passing of a very tal-ented and dedicated jour-nalist, Mrs. Pamela Glason Thornton.

To simply rattle off her accomplishments and asso-ciations would be doing an injustice to Pam, because there was much more to whom she was, which mere words cannot describe.

There are a few words that instantly come to mind when remembering Mrs. Thornton, she was a dedicated wife to her husband Herman, friend to all she met, sister, protector, teacher, educator, writer, motivator, who was compassionate, dedi-cated, driven and most importantly there is a phrase that she would prefer to be associated with most proudly, she was a Child of God.

Perhaps her greatest achievements took place on a daily basis; as she con-sistently rose above health challenges to inform the people, tell the story of those who perhaps would not be heard and to help individuals.

She was a journalistic warrior who believed that it was imperative to share stories that primarily occurred in the Afri-can American community, because it is in this community that such stories would get lost or go untold unless, if not for the existence of the Black Press.

She was a photographer, the ultimate volunteer and a great woman who will be greatly missed by her colleagues, loved ones and all those who knew her.

A native of Columbus, Pam grew up on the West Side (also known as the

Hilltop) and attended Fort Hayes Career Center, graduating in 1982 with a focus in radio and televi-sion production.

Pam would later attend Ohio University where she majored in journalism/broadcast news and went on to earn her Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1987.

Mrs. Thornton would find her way to the Call and Post and continued to develop her journal-istic skills under Amos Lynch Sr.

aka “The Godfather of the Black Press” in Columbus, Ohio.

During her stint at the Call and Post she met her husband, Herman (Ray) Thornton as the two worked together forming a bond that would last for years as they were inseparable. The duo made their home on the city’s Southside.

Pam was an original member of the first Columbus Post staff that was formed in 1995, where she served as the Religion Editor for years, before evolving as the City Editor.

She also served in a number of posi-tions with the Columbus Association of Black Journalists over the years as an Offi-cer primarily as the organization’s most valuable Recording Secretary.

Mrs. Thornton worked at Purpose Magazine and even had her own com-pany, R &R Editing Services.

A true servant to the community, Pamela Glason Thornton, your pain is over and you are truly at home with the Lord where you always belonged.

Rest in PeaceCalling hours are scheduled for 1 to

6 p.m. Friday at Gary Memorial Chapel, 867 S. James Rd., and for 10 to 11 a.m. Sat-urday at Macedonia Baptist Church, 492 Oakwood Ave. A celebration-of-life ser-vice at the church will follow Saturday’s calling hour.

On November 3, 2009, Franklin County Children Services will seek approval of its 3.10 mill replacement with reduction levy from Franklin County voters. The original levy, a 3.15 mill levy passed in 1989 and replaced in 1999, will expire at the end of this year. This critically needed levy sup-plies more than one third of the agency’s operating budget and allows the agency to provide protective and supportive services to the county’s abused, neglected and aban-doned children.

Franklin County Children Services has achieved many accomplishments in the four years since the last Children Services Levy. These include:

Although the number of investiga-tions for alleged child abuse and neglect has remained con-stant at about 11,000

per year, the agency has been providing more “front door” services so that children can remain with their families. The number of children placed away from home is at a 10-year low – yet the rate of further abuse or neglect of these children has not gone up – showing that children are remaining safe at home while family problems are being resolved through a network of evidence-based community services.

In a 2009 satisfaction survey conducted

with parents whose cases are open or were recently closed, 88% said Franklin County Children Services is respectful of their race and culture; 81% said staff respected their privacy and confidentiality; 75% said the people at the agency treated them with respect and courtesy; and 71% said they felt safe while at Children Services offices. Even though nearly all of the families came to the agency in a non-voluntary manner as a result of a referral alleging they had abused or neglected their children, 69% said they helped set their goals and plan the services to be provided, and 56% said they would recommend FCCS to their families and friends.

Children who cannot remain safely with their families are now being placed more frequently in their own neighbor-hoods and with their siblings. Foster par-ents are mentoring birth parents when they visit their children and encouraging reunifi-cation whenever possible.

As the holiday season of Thanksgiv-ing and Christmas approaches many of us are already making plans to spend the days with family and friends. Some will enjoy a meal alone. Some will enjoy a meal with family and friends. Still, others

will not even have a meal to enjoy. Some will reminisce, renew acquaintances and probably eat more than is good for us.

My own family celebration has undergone a revolution. Many family members are no long with us. But, as days pass, I am not so much saddened by family members who are no longer here, but thankful that God sent then

into my life. We should give thanks in all things because God deserves our continuous praise for his goodness to us. No one else loves us like he loves us. He proved it by sending Christ to redeem us. “I have loved you with an everlasting love,” He said to Israel in Jeremiah 31:3. As his adopted children, we get to share in the same love he had for Israel.

In his article, “Don’t Ask the Bless-ing, Offer One,” Dr. Ralph F. Wilson states when Jesus took the little boy’s lunch to feed the hungry multitude, he looked up to heaven, gave thanks and broke the loaves then the fish. To give thanks means to speak well of, to praise or extol. Jesus was not speaking well of or extolling the lunch. He was blessing and speaking well of His father who provided the lunch that would feed the

five thousand men, women and chil-dren. Wilson says in the Jewish faith, every faithful Jew would offer the bless-ing, “Blessed are you Lord our God, King of the World who has . . . caused the bread to come forth out of the earth . . . who has created the fruit of the vine.” This prayer of Thanksgiving reminds us to not just thank God, but to praise him for providing the food and drink. At the Last Supper with his disciples, Jesus took the bread, gave thanks and broke it; took the cup and gave thanks and gave it to his disciples. (Matt. 26:26-27). Jesus offered the traditional Jewish prayer for each item that was to be consumed.

Additionally, Wilson asks, “How did we end up blessing the food instead of the giver?” He suggests that it prob-ably came from a mistranslation of Mat-thew 26 when the word, “it” was added, which did not appear in the original Greek text. “Bless it” implied something far different from “Bless God,” minimiz-ing the giver. It is time to get back to the original prayer and bless God for the food first – along with asking him to bless the food. There is nothing wrong in asking God for a blessing, but praise should come before the requests. In the Lord’s Prayer, “Give us this day our daily bread” comes only after “Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done . . .” Asking God for blessings should not be our main focus, praising him should.

Daystar, the fastest-growing and one of the two largest Christian television net-works in the world, is now available on Glorystar Christian Satellite, Time Warner, Bright House and Comcast digital cable systems throughout the U.S., as well as New York City’s Cablevision. Through this expansion, Daystar original program-ming, including “Celebration,” “Joni,” “Gospel Music Showcase” and “Check the Sound,” will now be available to 17 million more homes across the country.

“These partnerships will allow Day-star to share the Gospel with an even larger audience,” said Daystar Founder and CEO Marcus Lamb. “Our goal is to continue to reach far and wide to make the greatest impact possible for the King-dom.”

Daystar’s domestic audience has grown from 63 million to 80 million homes this year alone. The network has ownership of over 70 U.S. stations with 21 of those stations in the top 30 television markets.

Globally, Daystar broadcasts to over 200 countries and 525 million households worldwide. It is also the first Christian television network to broadcast 24 hours a day, seven days a week into the Nation of Israel.

Daystar broadcasts on Galaxy 19 satellite, which covers all of the United States, Canada, Mexico and most of the Caribbean. In addition, Daystar is avail-able nationally on DISH Network (chan-nel 263) and DirecTV (channel 369). Day-star is a free-to-air (FTA) channel with no encryption on the signal allowing viewers to receive the channel without paying any monthly subscription fees.

“We are globally-minded and want to provide ways for viewers of all ages and in all locations to enjoy Daystar’s Christian programming,” Lamb said. “In addition to expanding our on-air reach, we are working to provide our viewers the modern means of connecting with Daystar -- podcast, live Web stream, live

A revolution is taking place, one profile at a time. Online social networks like Facebook and MySpace are connecting people like never before. With hundreds of millions of users, they’re creating almost limitless potential to redefine our per-sonal worlds. It’s a movement that’s changing how we form relationships, perceive others, and shape our identity.

In his new book, The Church of Facebook (David C Cook, October 2009) author Jesse Rice takes a deeper look at the movement which, at its core, reflects our need for community. “Our longing for intimacy, connection, and a place to belong has never been a secret, but social networking offers us a new perspective on the way we engage our community,” Rice states. This new perspective raises new questions: How do these networks impact our rela-tionships? In what ways are they shaping

the way we think of our-selves? And how might this phenomenon subtly reflect a God who longs to connect with each one of us?

The Church of Face-book explores these ideas and much more, offering a revealing look at the wildly popular world of online social networking. “The new landscape of social networking tells us

two basic things: One, we have a deep desire to be known. And, two, we are faced with a technology that both enables and hinders the intimacy we’re looking for,” Rice says. From personal profiles to status updates, author Jesse Rice takes a thoroughly entertaining and insightful look into what Facebook reveals about us, and what it may mean for the future of “community.”

ING THE GIANTS producer David Nixon, to direct inspi-rational movie set for release on March 12, 2010

Contact: Seanna Hore, Vivendi Entertainment, 818-286-4523

Vivendi Entertainment (VE) has announced it has acquired North American distribution rights for Pos-sibility Pictures’ feature LETTERS TO GOD, a faith-based film inspired by a true story. The deal covers all rights including theatrical, television, DVD, digital and mobile. The film recently wrapped production in Orlando, Florida and will be released theatrically nation-wide on March 12, 2010.

The film is the first from Possibility Pictures which is led by Nixon, along with producer Kim Dawson (BOBBY JONES: STROKE OF GENIUS, TEEANGE MUTANT NINJA TURLES I,II,III), executive producer

Tom Swanson (COME AWAY HOME), and writer Sandra Thrift. Based on a story writ-ten by Doughtie inspired by his son’s battle with cancer, the screenplay is written by Doughtie, Art D’Alessandro, Thrift and Cullen Douglas.

LETTERS TO GOD is a heartfelt tale of faith and redemption that will both

inspire and entertain. It is the story of a young boy coping with cancer and the amazing impact his faith in God has on his family, his classmates, and his community.

Tyler (Maguire) is a 9-year old who copes with the challenges of his treatment by writing letters addressed to God. His letters eventu-

ally find their way into the hands of Brady (Johnson), a beleaguered postman who is battling his own demons. At first, Brady is confused and conflicted over what to do with the letters. But he comes to realize that he was chosen to receive them for a reason, and ultimately the decision he makes about the

The city is all these kids have ever known. What passes for normal in their world goes against everything we hope and pray for when it comes to the next generation.

Fortunately, there are car-ing, God-honoring people that lead high-impact minis-tries who are willing to risk it all to help kids like Rey, Korina, Marcus, and Anthony. Now these kids must face the toughest decision of their lives: Is the hope of redemp-tion enough to lure them away from the streets?

Set Apart combines the action and excitement of a Western with the laughter of a comedy to become a poignant coming-of-age drama.

Four inner-city kids are each at a crossroad in their young lives; their decisions and actions could set them down life’s slippery slope. Fortunately, Pastor John Gunn (John Schneider) and his Power Company Kids’ minis-try are watching out for them. Even he knows, however, that the city is the last place these four should be. So he asks

his brother and sister-in-law, Randy and Heidi Gunn (play-ing themselves), to help out by showing these city kids “The Cowboy Way.”

The Gunns and the kids agree to try it out ... some more willingly than others! As they hit the road for the wide-open expanses of the mountains, little do these kids realize that a summer of adventure, chal-lenge, training, growth, and big dreams will change their outlook on life. Yet they still can’t leave the city completely

letters creates an enduring legacy to Tyler’s spirit.

“This film is a powerful testimony of what can happen when one young boy has faith,” said Nixon. “Tyler wrote his prayers, not as much for himself as for others. He believed that God was taking care of him and those around him. There are so many people facing difficult situations who need that same kind of hope, and that is why we made LETTERS TO GOD.”

“The purpose of this film is not to show the difficult side of cancer, but to inspire those dealing with seri-ous challenges in their own life to find hope by turning to family, friends and faith,” said Dawson. “We’ve seen many examples of people who have survived cancer just because they had hope -- a hope that comes from a belief in God. That is the message we want to spread with this movie.”

“Movies can touch lives, change perceptions and renew hearts,” said Swanson. “LETTERS TO GOD will be

a bright light in a darkened theater that lifts up audiences, encouraging them to go out and make a difference. It is an opportunity to build a bridge of hope. And to enhance the overall experience of seeing the film,” Swanson added, “We have partnered with Zondervan Publishers (a division of HarperCol-lins) and created a powerful suite of six books and a Bible, available in thousand of retail stores on March 12. This will be complemented with a soundtrack that has been compiled by music supervisor David McKenna for his label Bonded Records. Distributed by Fontana/Uni-versal Music Group Distribution, the soundtrack will be available prior to the film’s release.”

Vivendi Entertainment President Tom O’Malley commented, “I am thrilled to be working with Possibility Pictures on the release of their first fea-ture film. LETTERS TO GOD is a movie that will not only entertain, but inspire audiences everywhere. This is a very special picture.”

Dear Church Lady, I’m a man who goes to a Holiness Church were the women cannot wear any make up , now the woman I am dating also goes to this church and was raised in the Holiness Church and is very plain even for special occasions she will not wear makeup, but I think that make up can make a woman very attrative if applied correctly, but she will not do it what can I do?Thanksjust a little bit Dear Just a Little,Oh this is a hard one for Church Lady cause I love me some make up, but what means more to you seeing the woman your interested in stand by her beliefs or caving in to your desires? in the long run her faithfulness to her beliefs is what is going to make her a good wife to someone maybe not you...cause if you are more interested in her outward appearance then in her inner beauty then maybe she is not the equally yoked woman for you, Now I have to go reapply my lipgloss....Smooches,Church Lady

Dear Church Lady,I sit in the same seat every week at my church, and here latley it is growing and people keep sitting in my seat I’m starting to get upset because it is my seat I was here when this church was started I am just asking for a little Respect.SignedDevoted Member Dear Devoted,You don’t own that seat!!!!! and it isn’t your church!!!! it’s the House of the Lord, quit claiming spots and posi-tions within the church or as the young people say “get in where you fit in” if some one is in your seat why not sit down and introduce yourself wel-come them to the church, invote them back in other words BE A CHRISTIAN instead of a spoiled Church member mad cause somebody sitting in a seat you didn’t pay for, and if having a seat means that much to you bring a lawn chair and sit it right up at the alter 1 no one will sit in it and 2 you will be right where you need to be at the alter and hopefully someone will pray hard for you to be delivered out of that issue.Praying for you,Church Lady

(NAPSI)-A good enter-tainment plan that saves time and money is something to be truly thankful for. With the right plan, all that cooks will need to do on Thanksgiv-ing Day is put dishes into the oven and remove them when they are done.

A few hints from profes-sional chef Jim Coleman can help you save money while affording you more time to spend with your guests.Plan and Prepare• Start freezing stale bread a

few weeks before Thanks-giving so you can use it to make stuffing.

• Plan the menu the weekend before Thanksgiving. Compile recipes into a

recipe booklet for easy reference.• Save gas and time by making

lists of ingredients so you will only need one trip to the store.

• Cut up celery, carrots, etc. and store in ziplock bags for ease of use during the next few days of prep.

• Make stuffing the night before and make it a little dry so you can add gravy on Thanksgiving day to moisten.

• Cranberry sauce, pie, gravy, and side dishes can be made a few days ahead.

• Save money by asking guests to bring wine, desserts, a salad or a side dish.

table and tools• Set your table in advance; everything

from a centerpiece and glassware to

plates and napkins.• Enlist the help of family members in

preparation and cleanup.• Sharpen your knives beforehand to save

time on food prep. That includes your carving knife.

“A sharp knife is one of the most important tools and essential for the holiday season with all the food prep and carving of the bird,” said Coleman. “Preparation can save time and money, and a quality knife sharpener can renew the knives you already own and save you from the expense of having to buy new knives.”

Fortunately, you don’t have to be an expert to put a razor-sharp edge on your knife. A sharpener such as Chef’sChoice® EdgeSelect® Model 120 electric knife sharpener can make sharpening easy. It uses 100 percent diamond abrasives and precision angle guides for a super-sharp and durable edge. Call (800) 342-3255 for more information or visit www.chefschoice.com. A good knife sharpener saves money by renewing the knives you already own.thanksgiving Day• For a quicker cooking time, start at

400ºF with breast side down; after 45 minutes, turn over and lower heat to 325ºF. An 8-12-pound bird will cook in about 21/2 hours.

• Get your carving knife ready. After the turkey is cooked (meat ther-mometer should read 180° when inserted in the thickest part of the turkey), cool the bird for 20 minutes. Cooling makes the meat firmer and easier to slice. Remove and set aside the turkey legs and the last joint of each wing. Make a long, deep (to the bone), horizontal “base

cut” into the breast just above the wing. Slice down vertically through the breast until you meet the original base cut. This will release nice, even slices.

• Refrigerate leftovers immediately. Add leftover cranberry sauce to mayonnaise to jump-start leftovers for sandwiches.

Here’s a quick and easy recipe to help prepare your tasty turkey in advance:

Chef’s Choice Brine(For 8-12-pound bird)1 cup kosher salt (per gallon of ice

water)1 lime, cut into wedges1 orange, cut into wedges1 medium onion, cut into wedges5 cloves garlic4 bay leaves1 tablespoon dried thyme1 tablespoon dried sage1 tablespoon white or black pepper

Place a frozen turkey in a large enough container, such as an ice chest, to submerge it in the brine.

Pouring with a gallon measure, pour in ice-cold water to completely submerge your turkey. Add 1 cup of kosher salt per gallon of water. Then add remain-ing ingredients. Stir until well combined. Top with ice cubes and store in cool spot overnight.

Use more lime, orange, onion, garlic, bay leaves, thyme, sage and pepper for more than 3 gallons of water. Discard brine after removing turkey and rinse tur-key before placing in oven.

If you follow these tips, you will keep costs down and have more time for fun on Thanksgiving.

(NAPSI)-In the battle to banish germs, many parents are looking for an alterna-tive to alcohol-based hand sanitizers. One reason is that some schools have banned these sanitizers from classrooms as they can pose a serious poisoning risk to chil-dren if accidentally consumed.

Not only do today’s most common hand sanitizers consist of up to 70 per-cent ethyl alcohol, a higher alcohol per-

centage than many hard liquors, but The Journal of School Nurs-ing also stated that alcohol-based hand sanitizers are undesirable in schools as they can present a safety hazard to children because they are flammable and irritating to eyes and open wounds.

In response to these concerns, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recently updated its 2009 H1N1 flu recommendations to say, “If soap and water are not available and alcohol-based prod-ucts are not allowed, other hand sanitizers that do not contain alco-hol may be useful.”

“As a parent and doctor, I encourage my family and patients to safely protect themselves during cold and flu season,” said Dr. Scott Prose of Chicago. “After experiencing years of dry, cracked, painful hands and concerns over alcohol-based products, I exclusively use alcohol-free hand sanitizers in my practice to fight germs without the risks associated with alcohol-based sanitizers.”

“Because of inherent dangers, our school will not be using alcohol-based hand sanitizers in classrooms,” said Derry Martabano, director of the Kiwi School in Mahopac, New York. “When hand wash-ing isn’t available, we insist teachers use alcohol-free products to help prevent the spread of illness in the classroom.”

Fortunately, alcohol-free hand sanitiz-ers can be equally effective as alcohol-based sanitizers. When hand washing isn’t available, many experts recommend using products such as Smart & Silky Kids Foam-ing Hand Sanitizer, which helps kill 99.99 percent of illness-causing germs on the skin in 15 seconds and is unscented and hypoallergenic. Food and Drug Admin-istration (FDA) testing has confirmed its ability to reduce bacteria on the skin, and it has been shown to be effective against a broad range of dangerous bacteria.

The active ingredient in this product is benzalkonium chloride, a nondrying, moisturizing and conditioning formula. The product is sold at Target and Office-Max stores. www.officemax.com

Your business Could be

(NAPSI)-Small businesses are expected to play an important part in the nation’s economic recovery. For the past decade, they have generated about 70 per-cent of net new jobs annually.

To support an economic recovery led by small businesses, the Obama adminis-tration has taken several steps to ensure that businesses have access to the credit they need to survive and grow. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act signed by the president provides for increased guarantees and reduced fees for certain Small Business Administration (SBA) loans.

The Act provides the SBA with pro-gram tools that offer new economic incen-tives to small businesses and lenders alike, all aimed at growing the economy

through job creation, restarting lending and investing in small businesses and the entrepreneurial spirit of Americans.

Kerry Shatto of RadioShack in Doug-las, Wyo., took an ARC loan to avoid becoming delinquent on his accounts payable when the slow economy hurt his business. He found out about SBA’s America’s Recovery Capital (ARC) loan of up to $35,000, available to established, viable, for-profit small businesses that need short-term help to make their princi-pal and interest payments on existing and qualifying business debt. Such loans are 100 percent guaranteed by the SBA and have no SBA fees associated with them. Loan proceeds are provided over a six-month period and repayment of the ARC loan principal is deferred for 12 months after the last disbursement of the pro-ceeds. Repayment can extend up to five years.

The best candidates for ARC loans are small businesses that in the past were profitable but are currently struggling, yet have been making loan payments or are just beginning to miss loan payments due to financial hardship.

ARC loans are made by commercial lenders who are SBA participants. The SBA will pay these banks a monthly inter-est rate throughout the term of the loan.

The ARC loan fit Shatto’s needs and he believes it will help bridge the gap until the economy starts turning around and his customers begin coming back.

ARC is important because even small-business owners with strong credit his-

tories have seen tighter credit markets and have been struggling to expand their businesses, make payments or even keep workers on their payrolls. As a result, while the SBA typically guarantees about $20 billion in loans annually, new lending is trending below $10 billion this year.

Essentially, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act:

• Provides entrepreneurs and lenders financial relief from the current economic crisis that will help encourage borrow-ing and lending to all small businesses, including start-ups;

• Offers businesses access to the capi-tal and the tools they need to drive eco-nomic recovery and to create and retain jobs;

• Helps unlock credit markets for small businesses;

• Temporarily eliminates some loan fees for borrowers and lenders.

If you are just starting out with a small business, the SBA can help you with loans and business management skills. If you are already in business, you can use SBA resources to help manage and expand your business, apply for government con-tracts, recover from disaster or have your voice heard in the federal government. The sooner you apply, the sooner you may be able to get the assistance you need.

For more information about the ARC program, visit www.sba.gov/recovery/arcloanprogram/index.html. For infor-mation on SBA’s other programs and ser-vices, visit www.sba.gov.

could not return home have graduated high school in the past four years, with more than 50% going on to college, techni-cal school or into the military.

Since 2004, 822 children and teens under permanent custody of FCCS have been placed in loving adoptive homes, where they have become a part of a new, permanent family.

With its new model of providing more effective and less intrusive services to chil-dren and families, and with its successful efforts to more prudently and efficiently use taxpayer dollars, Franklin County Chil-dren Services has increased its spending an average of less than 1% per year over the past five years.

According to Eric Fenner, Children Services executive director, the agency is fulfilling its promise of “protecting chil-dren by strengthening families.” With clear guiding principles that state: We Are Child Welfare Professionals; We Value Every Child; We Honor Families and We Value Partnerships, the 700 employees of Children Services are committed to provid-ing family friendly services that emphasize child safety with the help of neighborhood based resources.

Children Services receives approxi-mately 70% of its funding from two prop-erty tax levies. Issue 4, the 3.10 mill replace-ment with reduction property tax levy on the November 3 ballot is the largest source of funding. FCCS’ other levy, for 1.9 mills, expires at the end of 2014.

“I am extremely proud of the accom-plishments our agency has made in the last few years. We have improved our ability to assess families and we have invested in quality, evidenced based services in com-munities where our children live. Passage of the levy is critical to maintaining these high quality services to children and fami-lies in our community,” said Fenner.

Fenner stressed, “Although the 3.1 mill levy request may not fully meet the agency’s needs, Franklin County Children Services has made a commitment to live within the income that will be generated, to efficiently manage the agency, and to provide high-quality services to families and children without coming back to vot-ers until 2014.”

(Family Features) As the time change nears, there are a few simple things you can do to make your home and family safer.

get the FactsHome fires seem to be things

that happen to other people — so why should you be concerned?

—Approximately every three hours a home fire death occurs somewhere in the nation.

—Two-thirds of home fire deaths result from fires in homes without working smoke alarms.

But it doesn’t have to be that way. According to the

International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC), working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a home fire by providing an early warning and critical extra seconds to escape.

In addition to changing smoke alarm batteries, take some time to learn about fire safety and to complete a home fire safety checklist. You can make your home safer — today.
