Helping hands, unsung heroes By Jennifer Lang It’s a big job and somebody’s got to do it. Each includes non-perishable food and sundry items, vegetables, a turkey or ham, dairy products as well as toys or giſt cards for children and youths, along with a grocery giſt card for each family or individual to help carry them through the Christmas season. Last week, the team from Community Liv- ing was taking apart damaged donation boxes, stripping off the wrapping paper and tape, and stacking them in a pile for reassembly, making quick work of the job. “I think it’s really cool that we do this for the other kids,” said Christel, one of the team members. Rougeau smiled. “It’s a tremendous thing to see our individu- als – I mean, sometimes, society casts them in a certain light – to see them helping individu- als who are less fortunate than themselves, is so heartening,” he said. “To see them being totally contributing members to society in a way I’m sure a lot of people don’t see.” Decorated veteran loses cancer battle at 90 By Jennifer Lang Bill Larson, a celebrated Cloverdale veteran and tireless campaigner for the Legion’s Poppy Fund, has passed away. Friends and family gathered on Saturday, Nov. 3, for his memorial service. Larson, who served in both the Second World War and the Korean War, came to symbolize the sacrifice of Canadian veterans when his image was immortalized in a mural paint- ed next to the Surrey Cenotaph in 2005. “Lest We Forget”was painted by Sullivan Heights and North Surrey Secondary students to commemorate land, sea and air battles of the Second World War. Larson is pictured seated in a wheelchair, flanked by two young cadets holding a wreath and a Canadian flag. Helping hands, unsung heroesBy Jennifer LangIt’s a big job and somebody’s got to do it.Each year, the Cloverdale Christmas Ham-

Cinema to raise cash for digital upgradeLive concert to feature some of Surrey’s brightest musical stars

By Jennifer LangIt looks like Martha

and Ethel might be forced into retirement after all.

The Clova Cinema is hoping to make the switch to a digital pro-jection system, follow-ing the industry-wide trend. In less than a year, 35-mm film will be phased out for good.

And that means the Clova’s two trusty, if temperamental, film projectors (named to help keep them straight during various break-downs and repairs) will have to be replaced after 65 years of service at Cloverdale’s famed sin-gle-screen movie house.

But first, the cinema is looking for ways to iraise some money in order to pay for the switch, an expensive prospect for the cinema, which has been owned by Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary grad Craig Burghardt for the past 16 years.

But instead of raising the already low ticket prices (the $8 adult ad-mission is for a double bill) or jacking up the cost of popcorn ($2.50 if you bring your own bowl), the Clova is put-ting together a family-friendly all-ages gig Nov. 16 featuring bands, solo artists plus a silent auction.

They’re calling it the Road to Digital.

“We are planning a very entertaining night for you,” Burghardt promises.

The cinema has as-sembled a talented lineup of local perform-ers, including headlin-ers and indie darlings The Oh Wells, who went from performing at their school’s Terry Fox Run to White Rock coffee shops to Vancou-ver’s club circuit. Now they’re CiTR Shindig winners, EMP Soundoff finalists, and are in the Peak Performance Proj-ect Top 20.

Brother act duo Sam Reseigh and his step-brother Steve – formerly of the groups Conspira-cy and Stella – will be performing pop covers and fun songs people can dance to.

Soulful singer/song-writer and guitarist Vanessa Bonita Dolezal sings in both Spanish and English, and cites such diverse influences

as Led Zeppelin and Avril Lavigne. This year she released her debut solo album, “When You’re Gone,” now available on iTunes.

The major motion picture studios are in-creasingly moving to

digital-only movie re-leases, meaning any theatre that doesn’t in-vest tens of thousands to install a digital pro-jection system will no longer have access to new movies.

“If we don’t convert over to digital projec-tors soon, then unfor-tunately, we would have to shut our doors,” says Samantha LeDrew, a long-time member of the “Clovamily.”

The Clova is also so-liciting items for a silent

auction planned as part of the concert.

“We have a few items for our silent auction and a few door prizes,” LeDrew says, “but if any [supporters] are able to donate, we are always looking for more.”

The Clova Cinema at 5732 176 Street qui-etly celebrated its 65th birthday this past May.

It was built because the business community agreed a movie house was an important local amenity.

Cloverdale residents snapped up $1,000 bonds to pay for con-struction. The bonds were repaid within two years.

Proceeds of opening night, May 26, 1947 – a gala event covered by the press and involving dignitaries – were do-nated to Surrey Memo-rial Hospital Fund.

Right from the begin-ning, LeDrew says, up to today, the Clova has made supporting the community that sup-ports the cinema a key operational mandate.

COMMUNITY CALENDAR

On Sunday many of us will gather around cenotaphs and in city squares for solemn ceremo-nies paying tribute to Canada’s service men and women. We’ll hear words like sacri ce and honour, some of them uttered by politicians.

But for some veterans they’ll ring hollow.

In 2006, Parliament unani-mously passed the New Veterans Charter that changed the way in-jured soldiers are compensated. Instead of a lifetime pension, indexed to in ation, veterans in-jured a er that year, or who had their injury diagnosed since then, would get a lump sump settle-ment.

Veterans A airs champions the new system as “a more complete approach to helping our men and women injured in the line of duty,” o ering them “real hope.”

But some injured veterans, like Kevin Berry, say otherwise.

ey say Canadian soldiers in-jured in Afghanistan, and those su ering the lingering mental and emotional e ects of their tour are getting substantially less support

than they would have received with the former indexed pension. Many are having di culty reinte-grating into civilian life.

A study by Queen’s University

last year concluded most dis-abled soldiers will receive only two-thirds the compensation under the New Veterans Charter than they would have received

from the old Pension Act.Recently Canada’s Auditor-

General criticized the Canadian Forces and Veterans A airs for their shoddy treatment of injured veterans, saying the system to get them help is “complex, lengthy and challenging to navigate.”

Even in death, the indigni-ties continue. A program that is supposed to contribute just over $3,600 to the funeral costs for destitute ex-soldiers has rejected more than two-thirds of funding requests since 2006. Even when approved, that money is still less than some social services depart-ments will pay towards the burial of the homeless.

It’s one thing for Canada’s poli-ticians to honour our veterans.

It’s another to treat them with honour.

JENNIFER LANG PHOTOSurrey MLAs Gordon Hogg, left, and Stephanie Cadieux, flank Surrey-Panorama hopeful Sukh Dhaliwal at a B.C. Liberal party announcement in Cloverdale last week.

Cadieux to run in Surrey-Cloverdale for B.C. Liberals

By Jennifer LangAs political moves go, it’s not exactly earth-shat-

tering, but it’s a big step for cabinet minister Stepha-nie Cadieux, who announced last week she will run for the B.C. Liberals in Surrey-Cloverdale come election day.

Cadieux made the announcement alongside in-cumbent Surrey-White Rock MLA Gordon Hogg and former Liberal MP Sukh Dhaliwal, who has decided to run provincially in her current riding of Surrey-Panorama.

The nomination in Cloverdale opened up when MLA Kevin Falcon – who was also at the Oct. 31 announcement at Sunrise Banquet and Conference Centre in Cloverdale, decided not to run again, prompting Cadieux, a Cloverdale resident, to con-sider running in her home riding.

“After some thinking, and speaking with family, close friends and some supporters in Cloverdale,

I decided the best move for me would be to seek the nomination in Cloverdale,” she said, adding she is excited about the move.

“I did have to think about it,” she told the Report-er, adding she’d always felt very welcomed in Pan-orama. “But I want to be able to represent the area that I live in. That is important to me, personally.”

Cadieux has represented Surrey-Panorama since 2009. While relatively new to politics, she’s held a number of cabinet positions and is currently minis-ter for Children and Family Development.

While praising Falcon’s legacy in the riding, Cadieux said she’ll put her own stamp on her role.

“I’m going to take a different look at Cloverdale as a new candidate,” she said, adding that she’ll be reaching out to businesses and residents in the next couple of months.

Cadieux’s decision to switch ridings opened up See SHAPING THE TEAM / Page 6

A casino and hotel, an 800-seat theatre and a massive convention centre are the key features of a casino proposed for South Surrey, proponents re-vealed at a preview last week in Langley.

Gateway Casinos and Entertainment’s plans show a landscaped complex that includes a 60,000-square foot gaming floor, 200-room hotel, plus a conven-tion and entertainment zone – featuring the largest live venue of its kind in Surrey – along with four restaurants and three lounges.

If approved by the City of Surrey, the $100 mil-lion project, to be located across 18 acres on a parcel at 10 Avenue and 168 Street, could open 18 months after breaking ground, said Tanya Gabara, commu-nity liaison for Gateway Casinos, who was joined at the event by the company’s general counsel, James Chen.

The public’s first chance to view and comment on renderings and details of the plan was slated for yes-terday (Nov. 7, after the Reporter’s deadline), at the Hazelmere Golf and Tennis Club.

A community forum for comment will be avail-able online for an extended period, Gabara and Chen added.

a vacancy in Surrey Panorama, where Dhaliwal, former MP for Newton-North Delta, lost his federal re-election bid in 2011 to Jinny Sims of the NDP. He’s lived in Panorama for 15 years.

Acclaimed as the party’s candi-date in Surrey-Panorama, Dhaliwal said he decided to run provincially because he sees the next election as critical for the B.C. Liberals.

Over the past few months, he’s crown more concerned about the prospects of the NDP forming government.

“We are at a crossroads,” he said. “I’m not prepared to sit on the sidelines to watch the Social-ists take over our programs.”

Dhaliwal said premier Christy

Clark and the Liberal party is “The best team that is going to represent us, all Brit-ish Columbians, af-ter the next election.”

The news came fresh on the heels of the party’s conven-tion in Whistler, a gathering described as upbeat and posi-tive by Hogg, a vet-eran MLA who will seek a fifth term in the spring.

“We’re approaching the elec-tion with a very strong team in Surrey, and a very positive and strong team is developing across the province,” Hogg said.

A joint candidate selection

meeting for Cadieux and Dhaliwal is Nov. 14, but both can-didates have been acclaimed, Gordon Shoeberg, presi-dent of the Surrey-Cloverdale riding association, told a small crowd of party members at the Clo-verdale event, adding the press conference was the beginning of what will be future announcements for

candidates in Surrey and the rest of B.C.

“Our announcement is help-ing shape the team that premier Christy Clark will take into the next election,” Schoeberg said.

Cultural connectionsMingle with your neighbours and

get to know your new city at an up-coming event at the Surrey Museum.

The Cultural Connections Open House, Thursday Nov. 15 from 2 to 3:30 p.m., is an afternoon of guided tours of the museum’s ex-hibit galleries, films about Surrey’s heritage and cul-ture, along with tea and refreshments.

At 2:45 p.m., there will be a presentation on the Settlement and Integration program for Immi-grants by Options Community Ser-vices.

With 40 per cent of Surrey’s pop-ulation made up of immigrants, there’s a strong need in the commu-nity for organizations to welcome newcomers and help them feel com-fortable in their new surroundings. The open house is a chance for the

city’s new residents to discover and ask questions about Surrey’s past, and learn about what organizations like Options have to offer in the way of services, training and other op-portunities.

Options is one of the agencies providing settlement and integra-

tion services to new im-migrants, says training coordinator Amy Jeon.

The agency partners with SUCCESS, PICS, DIVERcity, the City of

Surrey and Surrey Libraries. The Surrey Museum is located at

17710 56A Avenue, Surrey. It’s open Tuesdays to Fridays from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 pm. and it’s closed Sundays, Mondays and statutory holidays.

tions to the Canadian cavalry in World War One, and the importance of horses

during the war. The lecture is by do-nation and is suitable for all ages.

Did you know? The Royal Canadian Legion’s annual

Poppy Campaign continues to Nov. 11.When you see a Branch 6 member or

746 Lightning Hawk Air Cadet selling poppies, be generous.

The Poppy Fund works all year to pro-vide support services and prorams for veterans and their families.

With a new generation of veterans coming home, the fund is needed more than ever. Veterans turn to

the Legion for affordable housing, education, and trauma repair, relief and recovery. The fund is

also used for disaster relief when declared by governments.

The poppy has stood as a symbol of re-membrance since 1921.

They should be worn on the left breast, over the heart. Use a Canadian flag pin to keep the poppy in

place, instead of the L-shaped pin.– Cloverdale Reporter

Animal neglect and cruelty is heartbreaking to witness at any time of year, but as temperatures drop and winter’s wrath draws near, it is particularly distressing for SPCA constables to nd so many animals left outdoors in freezing temperatures, with little or no protection from the elements. While the SPCA responds to countless cases where animals are in serious distress after being deliberately neglected outdoors, even well-loved family pets can become sick or injured in harsh weather.

Here are some simple tips to keep your pet healthy and happy this winter:

Antifreeze can be a deadly winter hazard for pets, who nd the taste appealing. Ethylene glycol antifreeze is extremely toxic to pets and wildlife — a mere tablespoon is enough to kill a cat or small dog. Ensure you are using pet-safe, propylene-based antifreeze, which you will nd at automotive supply stores if you’re adding it yourself, or you can ask your mechanic for it if you’re having your vehicle professionally winterized.

Road salt is toxic if ingested and can also irritate dogs’ paws. When outside with your dog, pay special attention to where he’s walking and ensure you wipe his paws thoroughly after walks and play to remove any salt. (The SPCA recommends using pet-friendly, non-corrosive de-icing compounds.)

Ice can also cut your dog’s paws — watch your dog closely for signs he may be injured during exercise, and check for cuts and sores after exercise.

Cats and wild animals have been known to seek warmth inside the motor compartment of vehicles during winter. Make it a habit to thump the hood of your car before starting it to chase away any animals who may be hiding inside.

The BC SPCA is strongly opposed to keeping pets outside, particularly in cold temperatures. If you must leave your animal outside for short periods, ensure that he or she has an appropriate shelter that is elevated o the ground and insulated. It should also be regularly cleaned and cleared of any environmental debris. The outdoor shelter should also be appropriate to the weight and coat of the animal; he or she must be able to sit, stand, lie down and turn around freely and easily. Your dog must also have access to potable water at all times so check regularly to ensure that the water in the dish is not frozen.

Visit spca.bc.ca for more information on winter safety tips. Lorie Chortyk is General Manager, Community Relations, with the B.C. SPCA.

he was wounded. After the war, he moved to Surrey, working for

Fraser Mills. But military life called, and he soon enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force, then later the Canadian Provost Corps again, and by 1950, he was part of the PPCLI.

He left the armed forces in 1959, embarking on a long civilian career with Canada Post.

Music was a great joy of his life. He played both the trumpet and saxophone, performing with a number of bands. He was also physically active: he loved baseball, and played senior slow-pitch up to age 74.

He enjoyed writing, published a memoir of his army adventures and also wrote poetry.

An active force in the community, Larson was also involved in a number of groups, including the Chamber of Commerce, the Canadian Order of Foresters, Scouts Canada, the junior Olympic training program and the RCMP Auxiliary. He also founded the Cloverdale Jazz Club.

He’ll be greatly missed at the Royal Canadian Le-gion Branch 6 in Cloverdale, where he was a long-serving and active member. He was awarded a life membership in 1985.

A past-president of Branch 6, he was also espe-cially dedicated to the Poppy Campaign, which raises funds through poppy sales to support veter-ans and their families.

During the two-week annual campaign, “He just basically went out eight to 10 hours a day,” Branch 6 president Frank Redekop recalled Tuesday.

“He was out there all day, every day. He never sat down.”

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that any donations be made to the Royal Canadian Le-gion Poppy Fund.

Larson was a fixture at Remembrance Day ser-vices in Cloverdale, where he played the Last Post on his trumpet at numerous ceremonies.

His dedication and service represents what the Legion is all about, Redekop said.

“He just embodied the principles that the Le-gion stands for. He is definitely a man who will be missed,” Redekop said, praising Larson’s honesty and integrity, warmth and openness.

“He was a mentor to a lot of people,” he said. “He’s just one of those people who gave it his all, to his community and to his country.”

Along with his wife of 35 years, Esther, he’s sur-vived by three daughters: Catherine, Billie, and Patricia, stepdaughters Shirley and Linda, and 24 grandchildren. He is predeceased by son Richard.

Wrapping up Polio

CONTRIBUTED PHOTODistrict 5050 (Northwest region) Rotaract representative Jennifer Petrichenko, left, and Rotaract Club of Cloverdale president Janice Khunkhun pose with Rotary International President Sakuji Tanka. They were at the Oct. 19 Polio walk in Vancouver.

By Jennifer LangMembers of a Cloverdale youth

service club will be doing their part in the fight against polio by helping you with your holiday wrapping.

The Rotaract Club of Cloverdale will be wrapping presents by donation as part of efforts to eradicate the crip-pling childhood disease.

Club members will be at the Walmart in Langley Dec. 15 to 16 and 22 to 23, with all proceeds going di-rectly to the cause.

It’s just one of the activities the youth service club has undertaken to help spread the message that polio can – and must – be stamped out.

“I’m working to end polio now be-cause everyone needs to come togeth-er and help Rotary with the final push to eradicate polio from the world,” said Janice Khunkhun, president of the Rotaract Club of Cloverdale.

Across the globe on World Polio Day Oct. 24, Rotary clubs and Rota-ract clubs – Rotary-sponsored service clubs for young people aged 18 to 30 – were taking part in activities to raise awareness in the battle against the in-fectious disease.

For instance, a group of Rotar-ians and their community supporters from Victoria, Australia, gathered in

front of parliament wearing End Polio Now shirts.

And in India, volunteers from Ro-tary clubs in Taiwan and Korea took part in national immunization day.

The Global Polio Eradication Ini-tiative is a campaign involving the World Health Organization, Rotary International, the U.S. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, and the United Nations Children’s Fund, plus the support of governments and private donors.

Last month, Rotary pledged $75 million over the next three years to the cause.

Since 1985, Rotary has contributed approximately $1.2 billion towards the protection of children through immunization and other programs.

It’s hoped polio – a highly infec-tious disease that causes paralysis and even death – will be the first disease of the 21st century to be eradicated through combined international in-vestment and immunization efforts.

It remains endemic in Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan.

Last February, India was removed from the list of polio endemic coun-tries after attaining a polio-free des-ignation after reporting no new cases for a full year.
