DISTRICT GOVERNOR’S MESSAGE District Governor Emily L. Carnes 2009 2010 November 2012 Lion Reporter District 24-A To My Fellow Lions, October has been a pro- ductive month. Purcellville has completed its first Annual Golf Tournament fundraiser, the Spotsylva- nia Lions Club held their 14 th Annual Art and Wine show, several clubs held their annual fund raisers, many “spot” screenings were completed at local annual health fairs, and diabetes screening takes off. There is a renewed energy in 24A as we begin to catch more of the sight issues at an earlier age. November is Diabetes Awareness month. If you haven’t had a program on Diabetes Awareness please contact Gloria Wilson at (703) 981-7671 to schedule a program for your club. 24A has received many positive comments on our efforts to screen diabetes and educate ourselves and the public on this topic. Please accept my appreciation for the work so many clubs and lions are doing to accomplish these tasks. It is also important to remember that the Club Excellence Process (CEP) and the I-Plan are the tried and true methods for growing our clubs and increasing our capacity to give back to our communities through service. We have in stock the workbooks for the CEP. Please contact our cabinet Secretary Ann Woolford if you would like the materials. We will get the materials to you and provide a list of lions that could facilitate your club’s self- assessment and review. Last but not least, the website and facebook pages are posting club activities daily. We will have training on how to update our club facebook pages and e-club house websites at the winter conference in February, 2013. Please document your problems and keep a list of your questions. Also, continue to call with your immediate questions. Lion Michael Haws and his IT team will do their best to handle your social media concerns. To quote Win- ston Churchill, Every day you may make progress. Every step may be fruitful. Yet there will stretch out before you an ever- lengthening, ever-ascending, ever-improving path. You know you will never get to the end of the journey. But this, so far from dis- couraging, only adds to the joy and glory of the climb. DISTRICT GOVERNOR’S MESSAGE

District Governor Emily L. Carnes 2009 2010

November 2012 Lion Reporter District 24-A

To My Fellow Lions, October has been a pro-ductive month. Purcellville has completed its first Annual Golf Tournament fundraiser, the Spotsylva-nia Lions Club held their 14th Annual Art and Wine show, several clubs held their annual fund raisers,

many “spot” screenings were completed at local annual health fairs, and diabetes screening takes off. We will get the materials to you and provide a list of lions that could facilitate your club’s self-assessment and review. To quote Win-ston Churchill, Every day you may make progress. Every step may be fruitful. Yet there will stretch out before you an ever-lengthening, ever-ascending, ever-improving path. You know you will never get to the end of the journey. But this, so far from dis-couraging, only adds to the joy and glory of the climb. Yours in Service, DG Emily

October 27, 2012 Dear Fellow Lions, In 2008 the IRS introduced a new form just for small nonprofits: Form 990-N. In the past, if gross receipts were low enough no Form 990 was required. Howev-er, effective for tax years ending on or after December 31, 2007 most Lions clubs must file one of the Form 990s every year. Lions clubs must usually file either a Form 990, Form 990EZ, or 990N each year. The due date before ex-tensions is the 15th day of the 5th month after the close of your tax year. If your year-end is June 30, the due date is November 15, 2012. The simplified Form 990-N can be submitted if gross receipts are normally less than $ 50,000. If your organization does not meet the $ 50,000 gross receipts test you can file the Form 990EZ if gross receipts are less than $ 200,000 and total assets are less than $ 500,000. If your organiza-tion does not meet that test you must file Form 990. Gross receipts are the total amounts the organization received from all sources during its tax year, without subtracting any costs or expenses. Please note the filing requirement is present for 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) organizations. If you have set up a separate 501(c)(3) for your activities fund you must file the appropriate Form 990 for each organization. These are strict requirements and the IRS has indicat-ed charities could lose their nonprofit status if these forms are not filed. Thank you, Lion Mark Armendaris, CPA

Editor’s Note: Be aware. Some Virginia Lion Clubs have lost their IRS nonprofit status. It is very costly to obtain or renew that status .

Member Orientation

Attention King Lions, Secretaries, and Membership Chairpersons.

By now, you should have looked at the contents of the Membership Toolbox on the district website. Consider down-loading the “Membership Orientation” power point presentation and putting your club’s information in the section (begins at slide 28) that contains general lions club information. The presentation is meant for you to tailor and use when you are providing the orientation to new members. Remember, the orientation power point presentation is just a part of the orientation process. The process begins when the potential member attends the first meeting and con-tinues through the induction ceremony. A complete orientation process sets a firm foundation for the member. Ques-tions/Recommendations – Contact Lion Joe Angsten, D24A New Member Orientation Chairman.

LCIF & LOVF Emergency Funds

U.S. East Coast Bracing For Hurricane Sandy

Hurricane Sandy is expected to impact the United States from Virginia north to New England, and as far inland as Ohio, with high winds, significant flooding, and major power outages.

Dear Fellow Lions, What many experts are calling “the storm of the century” is about to hit the east coast of the United States. Hurricane Sandy is expected to impact the United States from Virginia north to New England, and as far inland as Ohio,

with high winds, significant flooding, and major power outages. We know Lions everywhere join us in sending their thoughts and prayers to the 60 million residents in the storm’s path. That includes some 3,000 Lions clubs. Lions Clubs International and Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) are standing by to assist where needed by providing disaster relief and emergency grants. Lions have shown time and time again their readiness and willingness to respond to natural disasters. We must always be ready and able to provide disaster relief at a moment’s notice – whether from hurricanes, typhoons, earthquakes, tsunamis, or man-made disasters. It is important to maintain funds for disaster relief efforts. In just the last year we have provided tens of thousands of dollars in emergency grants for flood relief in Nigeria, Thai-land, Canada, MD300 Taiwan, Bangladesh, United Kingdom and Japan, as well as typhoon relief to the Philippines, earthquake relief to Italy and wildfire relief to western areas of the United States. This was made possible by the gener-osity of Lions, who donate selflessly to LCIF. This year’s presidential theme is “In A World of Service.” Lions literally serve communities around the world 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Disasters strike at a moments notice, and we must be ready to respond. We encourage all Lions to consider making a donation to LCIF disaster relief so we can answer the call to provide much needed funding when and where needed. Sincerely, Wayne A. Madden Wing-Kun Tam

If necessary up to $10,000 Emergency Grants can be obtained from LCIF or LOVF. Emergency Grants from LCIF must be submitted through your District Governor. If a Lions Club needs an emergency grant do contact your dis-trict governor and request that grant. Lions of Virginia Foundation (LOVF) also has emergency grant money available if a Lions Club needs it to help people in there community. The procedure to obtain LOVF Emergency Grant money is to contact one of the LOVF Exec-utive Committee which consists of the President Jo Nelson (24-E); Vice President Chester Kramer (24-D); Secretary Phil Schrack (24-A) or Treasurer Arlen Eidson (24-D). All Virginia Lions and Lions Clubs can contribute to LOVF, recognize a Lion Member or an outstanding citizen by naming them as a LOVF Distinguish Humanitarian. Distinguish Humanitarian applications can found on the LOVF web-site by going to the LOVF web site. The URL is http://lovf.org/ Lions Club in MD 24 can use the LOVF $10,000 raffle to raise fund for their activity account as well as help LOVF raise funds for their projects. See your LOVF representative for details. LOVF has given more than 132 grants totaling more than $1,090,138 to help citizens in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
