DDS(DMD)

• A professional who diagnoses, performs and monitors the dental care


Dental Specialists


Prosthodontist

• (prahs-thoh-DAHN-tist)

• Replaces missing teeth with artificial appliances such as full mouth denture or

partial bridgework.


Periodontist

• (pear-ee-oh-DAHN-tist)

• Treats diseases of gingiva and gum tissues


Orthodontist

• (or-thoh-DON-tist)

• Corrects malocclusion and improper jaw alignment


Pediatric dentist

• (pee-dee-AT-rick)

• Also called Pedodontist (PEE-doh-don-tist)

• Dentist for children


Endodontist

• (en-doh-DAHN-tist)

• Treats pulp diseases and periradicular structures


Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon

• (mack-sill-oh FAY-shul)

• Performs surgical treatments

• of the teeth, jaws and related areas.


Public Health Dentist

• Promotes dental health and works

on the causes and prevention of

common dental diseases.


Oral Pathologist

• (puh-THOL-uh-jee)

• Studies the nature, diagnosis

• and control of diseases.


Oral & Maxillofacial Radologist

• Produces and interprets radiant energy images of the oral and maxillofacial

regions.


Forensic dentist

• Deals with the legal

proceedings of the

dental treatments.


RDH

• Registered Dental Hygienist

• Concerned with the prevention of

dental diseases, specializing in cleaning,

polishing and radiography of teeth,

periodontal treatments and

patient education.


RDA

• Registered Dental Assistant

• Aids the dentist id diagnosis,

• treatment and dental care.


Dental Laboratory Technician

• Performs dental lab procedures under written orders from a licensed dentist.

Can be OJT or education in a laboratory or school setting


Denturist

• (DEN-ture-ist)

• Specializes in the construction of dentures .

Basic Dental Setup

( armamentarium)

• Instrument collection composed of a mouth mirror, explorer, periodontal

probe, cotton forceps or pick-up and a piece of 2 x 2 gause.


Mouth mirror

• Used for reflection, retraction, and visual observation .


Explorer

• A sharp flexible pointed instrument- single or double ended- for detecting

caries and calculus, making location marks, picking up cotton points.


Cotton forceps

• Tweezer-like pinchers for transporting materials to or from the mouth.


Periodontal probe

• A long pointed instrument with measured marks on the tip used to assess

depth of tissue pockets.


Expro

• Double –ended instrument with a diagnosing probe tip at one end and an

explorer tip at the other.


Pen-probe

• A double ended instrument with a probe-marking tip on one end and a pen on the

opposite site.


Periodontal Grouping


Scaler

• Thin –bladed instrument with a pointed tip and two cutting edges used to

scrape off hard deposits from teeth.


Sickle scaler

• A sickle-shaped instrument with a sharp blade for removing calculus from

tooth surface.


Curette

• (kyou-RETT)

• Round-tipped thin blade with a longer neck and two cutting edges used to remove

sub gingival deposits.


Implant Scaler/ Curette

• Non-metallic, resin-tipped instrument, for removing deposites around

titanium implant abutment.


Periodontal knife

• Instrument with a flat-bladed incision tip of different shapes and angles for

removing


Scalpel

• (SKAL-pell)

• Handle for attachment of blades for cutting tissues.


Restorative Grouping

• A collection of hand instruments for removing decay, making preparations

and restore tooth surfaces.


Excavator (ECKS-kah-vay-tore)

Long necked, cup like( spoon) or sharp edged blades instrument for removing soft

decayed tissue.


Gingival margin trimmer

• Long, slender, curved, flat blade instrument.

• For breaking away enamel margins during tooth preparation.


Hoe

• Small bladed instrument with a tip like a farm hoe.

• For breaking or pulling away enamel tissue.


Hatchet

• Sharp edged instrument with a hatchet like tip.

• For removing hard tissue.


Chisel

(Wedelstaedt or Biangle)

• Hand instrument with a cutting edge

• For cutting away enamel tissue.


Cleoid • (KLEE-oyd)

• Double-ended with a pointed tip on one end (cleoid) and a disk shaped blade on the

other end (discoid).

• For carving anatomy features in new restorations or removing decay.


Carver

• Thin bladed instrument for removing decay or carving new restorations.


Condenser

• A thick, rounded or oval, flat head instrument (serrated)

• For packing or condensing restorative material.


Burnisher

• Instrument with smooth rounded head for smoothing out restorative material.


Amalgam carrier

• Instrument with a holding cylinder for transferring amalgam material


Matrix holder (Matrix strip) • (MAY-tricks)

• Holder device for maintaining artificial wall around the tooth


Wedge

• A wooden or triangular double inclined plane separates the teeth, hold the

strip in place and prevent material from leaking.


Evacuation

• High-volume evacuator (HVE)

• Saliva ejector tip


HVE

• Curved, bevel tip with a large hole inserted into a handle with off/on and

intensity controls for gross removal of fluid


Saliva ejector tip

• Small suction tip inserted into the evacuation tubing of the dental unit

• For steady constant fluid removal from the oral cavity


Rotary instruments


Straight hand piece (SHP)

• No head. Instruments are inserted into the opening


Contra-angle handpiece(CAHP)

• Instrument with anobtuse angled head inserted into power unit’s straight handpiece

• For gaining access to posterior teeth and difficult areas.


Right-angle handpiece

• Handpiece with its head set at a 90 degree angle.

• Inserted into power’s unit handpiece.


Curing light

• Focuses a light beam to cure or set specialized material.


Intraoral camera

• Small camera situated in the head of the hand piece for transmitting views of

the oral cavity.


Bur types


Friction-grip burs

• Held in the handpiece by the friction grip chuck


Latch-type bur

• Has a grooved insertion end that hooks into the head of a hand piece.


Straight hand piece

• With a extended shaft fitting directly into the straight hand piece.


Rotary instruments


Mandrel

• (MAN-drell)

• A slim metal holding device fits into hand piece used to smooth and cut.


Stone/wheel/Disc

• Abrasive items that can be mounted permanently on a shaft or placed on mandrels.


Diamond rotary instrument

• Commonly called burs or points For cutting, smoothing and reducing tissues
