The Effect of Cumulonimbus to the Flight of Air Asia QZ 8501

  • Outline The Effect of Cumulonimbus to the Flight of Air Asia QZ 8501

  • IntroCumulonimbus is a convective cloud, it grows vertically. Cumulonimbus involves in thunder storm and others extreme weather.

Cumulonimbus is the one that produces thunder storm, lighting, and hail, as well as very heavy rain. The Effect of Cumulonimbus to the Flight of Air Asia QZ 8501

  • ObjectivesAny extreme weather that effected by Cumulonimbus can causes any accident to the flight. One of the accident had just happened to Air Asia QZ 8501 on December 28th 2014. The plane lost contact with Air Traffic Control 42 minutes after taking off and 162 passengers and cabin crew were missing.

Here, we will discuss about the elements of Cumulonimbus i.e. turbulence, icing, and lightning that occur because the mature stage of such Cumulonimbus that are suspected as the cause of the accident. The Effect of Cumulonimbus to the Flight of Air Asia QZ 8501

  • MethodThe method of collecting data is literary looking from the internet. The Effect of Cumulonimbus to the Flight of Air Asia QZ 8501

  • Result and discussion

Turbulence is vertical movement within a Cumulonimbus which the velocity can be as much as 50 knots. The interaction between strong updrafts and strong downdrafts causes wind shear and severe turbulence within the cloud. The Effect of Cumulonimbus to the Flight of Air Asia QZ 8501

  • TURBULENCEThe Effect of Cumulonimbus to the Flight of Air Asia QZ 8501

  • Icing happens if cumulonimbus grow higher than freezing level so water droplets over the freezing level change to ice droplets. Icing is dangerous for flight because it disturbs the aerodynamic balance of plane. For example, if the ices get into the vane, the vane will be stucked or stop turning.

  • ICINGThe Effect of Cumulonimbus to the Flight of Air Asia QZ 8501Vertical temp profile
  • Lightning The visible discharge ofelectricitythat occurs when a region of acloudacquires an excess electrical cloud, either positive or negative, that is sufficient to break down theresistanceof air is called lightning. During a thunderstorm, lightning can occur within thecloud, between clouds, between the cloud and the air, or between the cloud and the ground.

  • LIGHTNINGThe Effect of Cumulonimbus to the Flight of Air Asia QZ 8501

  • ConclusionCumulonimbus contains extreme weather phenomenon such as turbulence, icing, and lightning. All of them are dangerous for flight. So, the pilot should avoid cumulonimbus in any route flights. The Effect of Cumulonimbus to the Flight of Air Asia QZ 8501
