The Churchill polar bear population is one of the most studied bear populations in the world, consisting of around 1000 animals. The little town of Churchill has had a long, mutually-respectful relationship with the bears, but it wasn’t until the 1980s that a few pioneering individuals, including some of us with International Wildlife Adventures, realized the rare opportunity to show people from all over the world these legendary animals.

Nanuk Lodge

Nanuk Polar Bear Lodge in Northern Manitoba offers a pristine wilderness area for viewing and photographing polar bear mothers with cubs while in a comfortable lodge setting. The moms with their cubs can be seen from late August to end of September.

Leaving from Churchill we have a chance to spot beluga whales from the air as we fly over the Churchill River. This is a great wilderness area for a

variety of wildlife to view and photograph.

Our base, Nanuk Lodge, is a collection of comfortable cabins along the Hudson Bay shoreline. The area is fenced off for safety but still allows for great observation and photography. Plus, daily excursions from the lodge onto the taiga and tundra will allow us to walk among the bears and other wildlife. Our experienced guides are well-versed in bear safety and use great care in not disturbing the bears.

This is a great polar bear tour for those wanting to see and photograph mothers with cubs as they congregate along the bay shore, waiting for the fall freeze-up. Other wildlife can be seen such as caribou, foxes, moose, wolves and ptarmigan. It's also a great time to see the fall bird migration in full swing!

NOTE: There is both a summer (Hudson Bay Expedition) and fall (Photo Safari) option. See price table and website for details and dates.

Cape Churchill Lodge Expedition

Cape Churchill is the “mother of all polar bear” trips” It is offered from the Tundra Buggy Lodge at the end of the season at Cape Churchill some 25+ miles from Churchill. The lodge is moved out to the last point before the bay freezes over where the bears are waiting to go out to hunt seals to sustain life for another cycle.

The larger male polar bears, moms with cubs and lots of single bears are the last to depart so the bear activity is endless.

Each Tundra Buggy is limited to 10 passengers, so there is plenty of room to move from side to side to get that perfect polar bear shot. The leaders are pro photographers that are there to help you if you need it.

This trip is also for the person that just wants to stay longer to watch bears in their natural habitat.

Tundra Buggy Lodge/Hotel/Details Tundra Buggy Lodge

The Tundra Buggy Lodge at Polar Bear Point is located some 25 miles east of Churchill. The Lodge is a specially-designed facility—five large, modular units on huge tires, linked together like a train but with a larger-scale interior. Between each unit are open-air platforms which provide safe viewing and photography areas. The five units consist of two sleeping modules (complete with shared bathrooms and shower facilities), a lounge module, a dining module, and a module which houses supplies and the camp’s power station.

Churchill HotelsChurchill Hotel trips are offered in a variety of local hotels. There are no 5 star hotels in Churchill--just local, clean neat, comfortable hotels. Each hotel based trip is offered from a different hotel so we do not list the hotels until the final itineraries.
