Vincent & Flavia

V incent Simone and Flavia Cacace have dazzled television audiences for six

series of the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing with their stunning Tango routines. Now they have created their own live show - Midnight Tango – a breathtaking evening bringing all the drama, sensuality and elegance of this most exciting of dance forms to life.

Set in a late night bar in downtown Buenos Aires and featuring some of the finest Tango dancers in the world, Midnight Tango takes you on a journey into a heart of this intoxicating city. As danger and excitement, joy and jealousy, pain and passion all combine – this is a spectacular and explosive evening not to be missed!

Both Vincent and Flavia are true born Italians; however whilst Vincent came to England in his late teens, Flavia came to England as a very young child.

All of Vincent’s family are dancers so his career is something that, he says, “was bound to happen as dancing is such a massive part of Italian life”. His parents are professional dance teachers in both Ballroom and Latin and his sister although at university manages to

teach street dance, hip hop and aerobics in her spare time.

Flavia started dancing at six when her parents sent her to Saturday classes at a dance school in Guildford. One of six children and always encouraged to participate in extra curricular activities, all her siblings had attended ballet classes in Italy, however on arrival here, there was no suitable ballet class locally so Flavia was sent to ‘Danceschool’ - a local ballroom school.

Vincent says that both he and Flavia are very moody so they like the types of dance where they can reflect this. One of their favourite dances is the Rumba as “It’s so seductive and sexy and complements our Italian mood!” but their main love is the Argentine Tango as “It’s so passionate and Flavia and I just love performing it so much”.

Birmingham Stage are one of the UK’s most successful companies at staging children’s classics for family audiences. Their past triumphs include several adaptations of Dahl stories like George’s Marvellous Medicine, James and the Giant Peach and Danny the Champion of the World, plus Tom’s Midnight Garden, The Jungle Book, more Horrible Histories productions, and of course the mind boggling Horrible Science which visited the Pavilions back in May 2010!

These two ‘Horrible Histories’ shows are both great fun and also show children (and adults!) what it was really like to live in the Roman and Egyptian periods - concentrating on the aspects most history books and teachers don’t tell you about – they manage to be horribly ‘yucky’ and very funny while still teaching you lots of useful historical facts!

The Ruthless Romans shows how the Romans made murder into a sport in the Coliseum. There are eight evil Emperors, lots of killer Kings plus masses of gory gladiators and grim ghouls. You will really feel what it was like to be a Roman soldier in the greatest army the world has ever seen – including having to duck lots of arrows thanks to the 3D Bogglevision!

In The Awful Egyptians you will be looking over Howard Carter’s shoulder as he peers into Tutankhamen’s tomb for the very first time. You’ll learn the truth about the creepy curses, ‘phabulous’ Pharaohs, mean mummies and gruesome grave robbers, on this fabulously horrible journey into the land of the Pharaohs! See a trailer of the shows at www.birminghamstage.com

“A broad, funny and surprisingly hard hitting entertainment. The sheer novelty of BOGGLEVISION adds immeasurably to youthful excitement and makes this show something very special indeed!” The Stage

“The latest sensation on the theatrical block. The audience shrieked as arrows whizzed over the stalls and the children were hooked” ★★★★ The Times

“I learned more in two hours than I ever did at school. HORRIBLE HISTORIES is bloody, gory and fun all the way!” Hull Daily Mail

Plymouth Pavilions are very excited to be welcoming back to Plymouth the wonderful Birmingham Stage Company, who are bringing these two fantastically funny Horrible Histories shows to our stage.

CORRECT ANSWERS 1(A) 2(B)

HORRID FACTS!• Did you know that if a Roman owed a

lot of people money they could all take a slice of him with a knife as payment!

• The Roman Emperor, Vitellus invented a pie made from the tongues of flamingos and brains of peacocks!

• A Roman cure for snake bite was to rub pig droppings onto the bite and then pour wine mixed with the herb Fennel up your nose!

• Egyptian remedies were just as bad... To cure baldness they mixed viper’s oil with bat ears and rubbed it all over the bald patch. If you had a toothache you were advised to cut a live mouse in half then while it was warm and fresh place it in your mouth.

• To show his success in battle an Egyptian soldier would take home the severed right hand of each of the dead he’d killed so the Pharaohs could count the number of their enemy’s soldiers they’d killed in the battle!

Feat

This September it will be 20 years since Plymouth Pavilions first opened its doors, and to mark the occasion we’re lining-up a huge year of celebrations including amazing live shows, competitions and special events!

19th September 1991 saw the opening day, and the first event was a classical concert by The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra along with comedian Frank Carson.

Current Director of Programming and Marketing Gavin Marshall muses about the line-up, “It sounds like a rather unorthodox pairing, and I don’t think it’s unkind to say that the first year or two of the Pavilions’ life weren’t a roaring success. The charitable trust that also runs the Theatre Royal were invited to take over the running of the complex in 1993, and it’s a move that has since enriched the experience of both our Arena and Rink and Pool customers. Our charitable objectives mean that we can provide a breadth of events than would otherwise not be possible. I don’t know of another place in the country where you could see Dizzee Rascal, Basketball, Lee Mack and a Welsh Male Voice Choir under one roof, let alone in the same week!”

As you will have already seen from the pages of this brochure, there is a fantastic variety of gigs already announced for 2011, including The Script, Alexandra Burke and The Specials, along with visits from Rhod Gilbert and Derren Brown. Of the line-up for 2011, Gavin is very proud, saying “We’ve already been able to announce some great shows for the year, but I’m really excited to say there’s much more to come! We have a good working relationship with the UK’s major Promoters, which helps us secure shows that wouldn’t otherwise come to Plymouth. In the past 12 months ‘supergroup’ Them Crooked Vultures, comedian Michael McIntyre and Peter Andre have all chosen to launch their UK tours here, which have gone on to visit far bigger venues in larger cities. They did this because they know they get a brilliant reaction from Plymouth audiences as well as a first class service from the venue. My aim is to capitalise on that further for our 20th birthday year, really making it a year to remember, and I hope you will be able to join us at such an exciting time.”

The little interview

Q: The best show…

A: Without a doubt when Pink came to the Pavilions in 2006. The production was out of this world and she was such an entertainer!

Q: Best bit of backstage gossip you’ve ever heard…

A: Well, I did have a conversation with Tom Jones about his new girlfriend once – but being a gentleman I couldn’t possibly divulge any details!

Q: Fondest memory of working at the Pavilions…

A: Shaking Margaret Thatcher’s hand when she came down for the Conservative Party Conference, and thinking about all the other world leaders’ hands that it had shook!

Q: Strangest showbiz request you’ve come across…

A: Shirley Bassey demanding Caviar was flown in to Plymouth airport and brought to the Pavilions – but not for her, for her cat!!!

Q: What has kept you here for the past 20 years?

A: The fact that I can honestly say I never wake up feeling I don’t want to go to work! It’s an enjoyable place to work and no day is ever the same.

Q: The biggest myth about celebrities is…

A: The ones that appear grumpiest on screen are usually the nicest ones when you meet them in real life!

We meet Graham Waite one of our longest serving members of staff who has worked with us for over 20 years and find out how he’s seen the place change for the better!

It’s our Birthday and we’re going to party all year long!

Buena Vista Social Club® released its only studio album, produced by Ry Cooder, in 1997 and achieved instant success.

The Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club’s live performances have been praised by the UK press for ‘taking the atmosphere up to a breathless level’ (The Independent), and leaving audiences ‘awestruck’ (Financial Times).

At the forefront of the group are four musicians who will be recognized from the Buena Vista Social Club film; trumpeter Guajiro Mirabal, laud virtuoso Barbarito Torres, trombonist Jesus ‘Aguaje’ Ramos, and guitarist/keyboardist Manuel Galbán. Joining the expanded line-up of Cuban players is vocalist Omara Portuondo, a member of the original Buena Vista Social Club, whose 2008 recording Gracias (World Village/Montuno) won a Latin Grammy and scored a Grammy nomination.
