TEACHER RECRUITMENT FAIR, 2013 01

A WARM WELCOME TO PLYMOUTH UNIVERSITY’S TEACHER RECRUITMENT FAIR 2013!

The Employability Service offers a variety of opportunities for you to meet employers and each academic year the Employability Service organises 5 faculty focussed careers fairs, open to students and graduates from across the University. These are visited by over 3000 students who are looking for information on graduate jobs, work experience opportunities or post graduate study.

THIS FAIR IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR YOU TO:

• See the types of recruiters available, which students they are looking to recruit and the criteria you will need to meet.

• Meet over 25 major international, national and local employers, who may be recruiting for graduate vacancies, placements, internships and work experience opportunities; and to make a good first impression.

• Talk face-to-face with recruiters – ask questions, gain information and advice that may not be available on their website.

• Get ideas and information on what you can do with your degree.

• Find out about the jobs, postgraduate study and time-out opportunities available to you.

• Receive constructive feedback on your CV from the recruiters who will be reading them, and on how to build your employability skills from the people that know.

• Pick up information, hints and tips and feedback from Plymouth University Employability Service advisers.

The employers here today represent a diverse range of educational recruiters and institutions, employing people all over the world – a truly global network of opportunity.

The thought of attending your first careers fair and initiating your first face-to-face contact may feel overwhelming, but with careful planning and plenty of research you should come away feeling more clued-up about the opportunities available and the application processes, as well as gaining some useful contacts. I encourage you to read the page in this brochure ‘Making the most of your Careers Fair’ to really make today work for you and ensure that you leave today having taken positive action towards your employability and career goals.

The employers represented here today have an active interest in Plymouth graduates. Thank you for attending and making the most of their interest in you. Shirley Walker (Head of Careers and Employability) and the Employability Service Team

MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR CAREERS FAIR

PREPARATION IS KEY

Research the organisations who are attending by visiting their websites and why not see if they have a Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn page you can follow? This will help you to target the most relevant employers on the day and ask appropriate questions.

Think about the questions that you want to ask, so that you don’t end up just wandering around the stands picking up information, or asking obvious questions. Being remembered as the person who asked interesting and engaging questions can’t be a bad thing!

ON THE DAY

Although fairs are less formal than interviews, the organisations will still be on the lookout for potential candidates:

• Dress smartly; you never get a second chance to make a first impression!

• Take copies of a CV (make sure it’s a good one) and why not take along some business cards you can leave with employers? This shows you are serious and prepared and not just there for the freebies!

• If someone gives you their business card and invites you to call them for a further meeting, follow it up. It may open the doors to work experience, other opportunities and developing valuable transferable skills.

Consider the type of work that interests you and your skills and experience to date. Employers may ask what you want out of a placement or graduate job and what you could bring to a role.

Know your digital footprint! What do you find when you Google your name? Are you happy for employers to see your Facebook photos? Are your tweets appropriate? Is your LinkedIn profile current and professional? Employers increasingly check candidates’ online presence so it is good to be confident in yours!

• Keep up to date with the latest fair news from the Employability Service and exhibitors by following:

FIRST APPOINTMENTS – HOW TO GET YOUR FIRST TEACHING JOB

ASK THE RIGHT QUESTIONS

The questions you ask should depend on what is appropriate to the employer, the research you have done, and what you want to get out of your discussion with them. You need to develop your own ideas, but here are a few examples of questions you might want to ask:

What types of projects are currently being undertaken?

What training opportunities are available?

How many graduates are recruited each year?

What has happened to the graduates you recruited last year?

This presentation is the keynote speech for the Teacher Recruitment Fair and is for Final Year BEd and PGCE students. Due to the popularity of this session we will be running the same talk twice during the day. Delivered by Barry Hancock, and supported by NASUWT, this informative and entertaining session will arm you with a wealth of practical advice on securing your first teaching job. Spaces for this talk are limited and are allocated on a first come first served basis. It is essential that you book your place at this event and this can be done by signing up here:

www.plu.prospects.ac.uk/casa/servlet/casa.jobseeker.event.JSEventServlet?mode=showEv

Please note this talk is only suitable for Final Year BEd and PGCE students. Students on other courses, looking for placements or graduate opportunities, will find a wealth of information available from exhibitors at the Teacher Recruitment Fair.

What are they doing now?

What particular skills are you looking for?

Where do you usually advertise job vacancies and how do you like people to apply?

What qualification level do you require? (i.e. 2:1, postgraduate qualification etc.)

Does your organisation have any opportunities for work experience or part time vacancies?

Do you expect graduates to have done some work experience before applying?

What is your selection process? (such as assessment centres, interviews, tests)
