Plymouth Marjon Basketball Club (PMB) is a registered charity that was originally

formed in 2000 as Tamar Valley Basketball Club, by George Hatchell.

Its primary function was to create opportunities and enjoyment for local players, ranging from

8 year olds to adults, male and female, allowing everyone to compete at the level of their capability.

Since the clubs inception, nearly 1000 youngsters from Plymouth and the surrounding areas have registered

with the club, many of them introducing family and friends to the game along the way.

In 2007 we gained Clubmark status as recognition of our work in the community, an ongoing programme requiring

support from local sponsors through donations, sponsorships and funding.

In 2009 we merged with the Plymouth Raiders, creating Plymouth Marjon Basketball, taking control of all the youth basketball in the

city. All recreational competitions, seniors and juniors, are affiliated with PMB along with all National League and Elite development in

the city.

Possibly our most exciting development began in 2010 when we became one of 5 founding sports clubs of ‘Plymouth Marjon Sports Club’. The

‘Sports Club’ aims to combine resources of local clubs operating out of UCP Marjon to help each other encourage increased participation. In the future

we look forward to operating our own club house and bar, which we believe will further enhance what we offer to the community.

Operating from University College Plymouth Marjon, provides us access to their brand new sports and leisure facility that is open for public and student use, ensuring exposure to a wide audience.

Throughout the season our national league players train twice a week and play competitively, home and away, every weekend.

We also provide a local development programme offering a range of recreational sessions introducing the game to boys and girls aged 5 – 16.

Once the national league season is over we hold Development programmes through our partner ‘EDGE Basketball’ and a Summer League, open to any interested player, regardless of ability, providing them with the chance to play competitively.

Having run for 2 years now, EDGE Basketball offers intense elite training to those players that want to progress their skills through hard work and top level coaching.

The 2012 Summer League saw us work with the councils ‘Youth Partnership’ where sixty young people participated, a large percentage being new to the game and the club. This competition offered a family friendly environment where parents were encouraged to actively get involved and support the teams and club.

Off the court we provide Level 1 and 2 Coaching courses, encouraging players and parents to broaden their knowledge of the game, and officiating courses, producing referees and table officials that carry out the duties required for national league competition.

DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME

SUCCESSES

The club can boast that players have represented the City, County, South West Region and in some cases their

Country.

Today the club programme is extensive running weekly recreational sessions for players as young

as 5-16, coaching in schools, teaching multi skill classes in disabled schools, running competition

leagues for under 18’s as well as elite level training programmes during the off season.

In the last two seasons both our under 16s and under 18s have won their respective leagues

resulting in promotion to the Premier National League, a rarity for a South West Team! In addition, our under 14s and under 13’s won their

national conference leagues last season.

Our 8 coaches all have their nationally recognised level 2 coaching badges with Matt and George Hatchell boasting advanced level 3’s. We have nearly 20 referees within the

club who have their level 2, and a further 8 who have their advanced level 3.

Off the court we have developed officials and statisticians that have gained the highest

qualifications, allowing them to represent the club in top competitions such as the London

Olympics 2012.

This success requires commitment and hard work from coaches, players, volunteers and parents

whom dedicate their time primarily without any financial gain.

Despite this success, we believe there is still more we can achieve, and with further support we can

increase not only the number of participants but coaches and officials that are vital to the clubs

future.

Sean Porter, 21.

When I started secondary school ten years ago in Torbay, there were very few opportunities to play basketball at a competitive level. Thanks to two supportive parents, I traveled to Plymouth 2/3 times a week to play for the Tamar Valley Cannons under the supervision of George and Matt Hatchell.

I had just joined the club when things had really started to take off; the u18 programme was a legitimate top 4 team in the nation, and the senior team was competing in a men’s division 2 league equal to that of today’s division 1.

The coaches installed in me the work ethic, and competitiveness I would need if I was to go on to achieve anything significant within the sport, and thanks to them I gained international honours and represented my country as an England junior. The club also gave me the opportunity to train and play up at senior men’s level at just the age of 15, an opportunity that few other clubs give to their young players.

In 2006 I left Plymouth and went on to win a Junior National Championship with Reading whilst studying my A-levels with their academy, following that up with a season in division 1 with Bristol, before coming back home and enjoying two more seasons with the newly formed Plymouth Marjon Basketball Club.

I cannot thank those at the club enough for all they did for me both on and off the court. The type of coaching and guidance I received from the Hatchell’s helps players like myself, who don’t necessarily possess the best physical gifts or sporting talent, to go on and accomplish some of the highest accomplishments possible

in junior basketball.

TESTIMONIALSWe have an impressive track record of recognising and developing a young person’s talent and providing opportunities to diversify their individual talents in all aspects of the game. Jamie, Sean and Chris’s story illustrates this perfectly:

Jamie Davies, 26

As a small ten year old boy I began to lose

interest in football and turned to basketball. After

being told by one coach I was too small to play at a competitive

level, I found Justhoops basketball. The programme, run by George Hatchell

with several other coaches, took me in and began to develop my skills and my

passion for the game grew and grew.

When I was twelve I was given my first opportunity of playing competitive basketball

by Matt Hatchell the son of George. From that first moment of stepping on the court in a kit representing a

team, I knew I wanted to go further.

Throughout my teenage years basketball was everything to me and the support and quality coaching I received from both Matt

and George was influential in what I have achieved in basketball.

When the club changed its name to Tamar Valley Cannons, my basketball career started to take off. Playing under 14’s, under 16’s, under 18’s and

senior men’s national league basketball week in week out was really helping to develop me as a player and person. Due to George and Matt’s coaching, I

eventually made the South West England team and travelled Europe playing against top competition several times a year for four years. The club also gave me

my first opportunity and taster into men’s national league basketball at the age of 15. The belief was overwhelming and I managed to keep a regular place in the team and

training, which no other club would have given me.

In 2005 I left Plymouth to go to high school and eventually university in America. This is something that I would never have done if it was not for the support and belief that the coaches

at the club had in me. I enjoyed five unbelievable years in America playing basketball and gaining an education. A lot of thanks and appreciation has to be given to the club as I would not have been

the player I was without the guidance of the coaches.

I have recently returned to play division 3 basketballs, with a strong aim to try and gain promotion and now use my experience and knowledge to help mentor some of the talented youngsters that are coming through the club. The coaching is of one of the highest standard in the country and they will give anybody a chance and help to install self-belief and better you as basketball players as well as people.

Chris Chapman, 23.

I joined Tamar Valley Cannons in 2005 when I played two seasons at U18 national league level and 3 seasons at senior men’s level. As well as playing at national league level the club has also given me many opportunities to develop in areas other than playing. I gained my level 2 England Basketball Coaching award, coaching a couple of our junior teams in 2006/07 and 2007/08.

The club supported me in gaining my level 2 Table official award in 2008 and level 3 in 2011. I currently officiate at national league level and am looking to progress this year to the BBL (the top league in the country).

In 2009 the club encouraged me to complete a basketball statistics course and I recorded statistics for the clubs’ senior teams in the national league. This has led to me being selected as a statistician at both the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics. This is undoubtedly the highlight of my basketball career so far and something I could never have dreamt of achieving without the support of the club.

I also gained my level 2 and 3 refereeing awards in 2010 and the club is currently supporting me in my goal of becoming a FIBA international referee.I am extremely proud of my achievements and grateful for the love and support the club has shown me over the past 7 years.

There is no measurement for potential, but as a basketball club that serves the community and provides basketball opportunities we know that hard work and effort helps achieve goals.
