Introducing the Marine Industries Production Campus in South YardSouth Yard is part of the HM Naval Base located in Devonport Dockyard Plymouth. Plans are well advanced to transfer 7.5ha of the Yard to Plymouth City Council in order to develop a flagship Marine Industries Production Campus. The vision for the campus is to bring together research, innovation, production and deployment in areas such as autonomous vessels, green vessel technology and composite manufacturing.

South Yard occupies an unrivalled location. There is deep water access to the open sea and three vacant open water docks. Two of the largest marine companies in the UK Babcock Marine and Princess Yachts International are located close by, Plymouth University, Plymouth Marine Laboratories and the Marine Biological Association provide world class research facilities.

The Wider Peninsula Offer

The development of a Marine Industries Production Campus in South Yard will act as a catalyst for similar developments across the far south west.

Expertise in the marine sector is not confined to Plymouth alone. The Wave Hub in Hayle, theFalmouth Bay Test site and Appledore Shipyard Campus will link up to create prospects forjoint working, innovation and growth.

By 2030, the marine sector in the south west peninsular will have created 9,000 new jobs.

Hayle

North Devon

FAB Test is a one quarter scale, fully consented, wave energy test site. Port of Falmouth is the deepest natural harbour in Western Europe.

A&P Falmouth is one of the largest private sector employers in Cornwall.

The £42m Wave Hub is the largest and most technologically advanced grid-connected site for the testing and development of marine energy devices. Hayle Harbour is undergoing a £20m investment in port infrastructure including a new marine renewables business park.

The marine division of Babcock International has a major shipyard at Appledore, employing over 400 people including design engineers, fabricators and specialist trades.

Plymouth

Devonport Naval Base and Dockyard, home to Babcock Marine is the largest naval base in western Europe, directly employing over 5000 people. It has 14 dry docks and over 25 tidal berths. Plymouth University’s Marine Building houses dedicated technical support and facilities for up to 150 Marine Institute researchers. Their COAST Lab wave tank is available for private sector device developers.

There is a range of marine related industries based in Torbay complemented by high-tech businesses such as Spirent and Oclaro.

Plymouth’s marine sector employs around 13,600 people that make up 11.3% of all employment in the city.

Companies and their employees already taking advantage of Plymouth’s strengths and enviable lifestyle include: Fine Tubes Ltd, Kawasaki Precision Machinery (UK) Ltd , Manuplas Ltd, Msubs Ltd, Pipex px, Plessey Semiconductors Ltd, and many more.

More than 300 marine related businesses are based in Plymouth including the Plymouth Marine Laboratory, the Marine Biological Association and the National Marine Aquarium.

South Yard will provide state of the art facilities for marine manufacturing, including space for engineering and composites workshops, assembly areas and mobilisation.

There will be direct access to the docks from this area allowing businesses to engage and share ideas.

The main campus car park for 300 cars will be sited in this area.

Manufacturing

South Yard’s three docks are suitable for many marine industry dockside operations and will offer marine specialist companies a unique expansion opportunity. The dry dock facilities can be reinstated and the site has the capacity to undertake deep water testing.

Dimensions

The three docks range from 165m to 84m long and between 20m and 29m wide.

The entrance to the campus will contain research areas with laboratories and workshop space suitable for marine ICT, technology and prototype development as well as training facilities.

The accommodation will be flexible allowing for collaboration within a community of like-minded businesses.

Research

Linked to the research area we will also have spacesuitable for design companies and consultants. Light,bright and with meeting places, the area will suit a varietyof professional marine businesses, CAD specialists anddesign engineers.

We will also have a café and open air meeting space. Many offices will have spectacular, uninterrupted sea views, including views across to the beautiful Mount Edgcumbe Country Park in Cornwall.
