Jubilee Year of Mercy This Jubilee Year of Mercy bids us share our own experience of Jesus’ mercy with those on what Pope Francis calls the “peripheries”—people who feel marginalized, even unwelcome—inviting them to come home. But with all this mercy, why today’s mayhem? “Do you think I have come to establish peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division” (Luke 12:51). Jesus “breaks down” those “breakups” in painful detail—parents, children, even in-laws. “Against” appears eight times in five verses. Jeremiah faced death for bearing witness (Jeremiah 38:4). Can’t we bear at least a small share of the sometimes merciless cost of sharing mercy? The Letter to the Hebrews warns us, keep your “eyes fixed on Jesus” and “so great a cloud of witnesses,” lest we “grow weary and lose heart” as we run “the race that lies before us” (Hebrews 12:1–3). After all, “for the sake of the joy that lay before him,” Jesus “endured the cross” (12:2). Can’t we endure our small crosses for the sake of sharing mercy? —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

and has taken his seat at the right of the throne of God.

— Hebrews 12:2

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — They took Jeremiah and threw him into the cistern (Jeremiah 38:4-6, 8-10). Psalm — Lord, come to my aid! (Psalm 40). Second Reading — Let us keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, the leader and perfecter of faith (Hebrews 12:1-4). Gospel — I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing (Luke 12:49-53).

THE COSTS OF DISCIPLESHIP Today’s responsorial psalm, Psalm 40, is more famil-iar to us with the refrain “Here am I, Lord.” This “Here am I” is Jeremiah’s great prophetic response to God’s call. But today’s story of Jeremiah and the refrain “Lord, come to my aid!” remind us that there are always two sides to fol-lowing the call of God. The author of the Letter to the He-brews knew this, too. He reminded his readers that even weighted down with burdens and sins, we can still perse-vere by keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, who himself knew the shame and pain of the cross, but saw beyond it to the joy of sitting at the right of the throne of God. Jesus himself gave the disciples a “sneak preview” of a baptism that would not be as wondrous as the one in the Jordan that inaugurated his ministry, but would be one of fire and anguish. Today’s words from scripture may not be terribly soothing, but in their honesty and strength we can acknowledge the difficulties of daily discipleship, and take comfort in the assurance of our own salvation in Christ. SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Monday: The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Tuesday: St. Stephen of Hungary Friday: St. John Eudes Saturday: St. Bernard

Some very important questions we should all be asking ourselves at St. Joseph the Worker

parish:

being presented to God as “my sacrificial gift” something that is truly sacrificial and thus pleasing to God? Or am I offering God scraps or my leftovers? • Is not my God and the support of my Catholic parish church where people are being spiritually fed, nourished, renewed, reconciled and being healed by God not worthy of 2 hours of my 40 hours worth of wages? • Is 2 hours out of 40 hours or 5% of my weekly in-come really just too much to give back to God in gratitude for all the blessings I receive, especially when everything we receive from God is a gift in itself? Please seriously and prayerfully reconsider your Sunday offerings, as it is your personal sacrifice that is being presented to God for the support and help of His Church. St. Joseph, pray for us.

Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happi-ness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: “If you knew the gift of God!” You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought af-ter, loved, and forgiven by God. Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this of you, Lord Jesus, through the inter-cession of Mary, Mother of Mercy; you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen.
