ABOUT THIS COFFEE

The chasquis were the messengers of the Inca empire — the fittest and most highly trained individuals; the best of the best. They would not only run messages across great distances and topographies but could read and translate and helped to keep order. 

This coffee is a collection of lots from around Peru that, like its namesake, are the best of the best. Coffee cherries were machine cleaned and processed, and after the coffee was dried it was sorted by color and density to ensure that only the best beans remained.

GEOGRAPHY

Junín is in the center of the country, Cajamarca is in the north and San Martin is in the northeast.

The Center Regions used to be the largest, in terms of coffee volume, but that dropped dramatically after the leaf rust crisis in 2013. Since the crisis, San Martín and Cajamarca have been expanding again, in both productivity and new planted areas. 

ABOUT PERU

Known as the land of the Incas, Peru boasts a rich coffee-growing culture that dates to the 1700s. Wih the spine of the Andes running through the western half of the country, Peru is an ideal place for growing high-quality Arabica. Coffee here is traditionally shade grown and processed in artisanal wet mill operations.

FROM OUR TEAM IN PERU“Volcafe Way was officially launched two years ago, but Prodelsur (Genuine Origin’s sister company in Peru) has been working directly with thousands of producers for quite a while. Proyecto Tierra was a breaking point for the coffee culture in Peru. This started in 2004, thanks to a joint venture between Volcafe (Genuine Origin’s parent company) and Lavazza, Italy’s largest coffee roaster.
