The purpose of this presentation is to provide an update on the Channel Improvements Project as we enter the second and final year of construction.
Purpose
Historical flooding
• 12 major floods in the past century
• Most recent major floods in 1995 and 1998
• Potential flood damages in this area are estimated in excess of $48 million (1999 value)
Project objectives
• Provide one-percent flood protection to the citizens of Mountain View and Los Altos using a natural flood protection approach
• Protect Central Expressway and Middlefield Road
• Address deteriorating concrete channels
• Provide opportunities for environmental enhancements and trail extensions
• Minimize long-term maintenance costs

The project will protect 2,200 parcels in Mountain View and Los Altos from a one-percent flood.

What to expect during construction• Estimated 8 months of construction
• Work hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday
• Work between Mountain View Ave. and Valencia Ave. will mainly take place within the creek
• Mountain View Ave. between Raymundo Ave. and Arroyo Rd. will be closed to traffic for approx. 5 months while the culvert is replaced
• Temporary fencing and signs will be installed
