NAUTILUS" FNS MANUALThill filter operates under prell9ure. When clOlled

properly and operated witho\lt air in the watersystem, this filler will operate in a safe manner.

Warning label, should be affixed to the top ofthe filter and on the clamp bands 8t all times.Keep Bafety labels in good oondition. Replacemining or damaged safety labels. (For free Iii\).els call 1·919-774-4151).

A. HOW YOUR FILTER WORKS

YOliT vemca1ll'rid diatomaceous earth (D.E.)filter;8 designed to operate for yeaTS with propermaintenance. The filter housing ia made of corrosion resistant materials and when installed, operated and maintained in accordance withthese instructions, your filter will provide yearsof service.

Your filter must be charged with D.E. 81 initial start·up. This D.E. will cover the vertical filter gridcloth within the filter with a thin coating. Dirtywater flows from the pool through the controlvalve on the side of the filter and into the lowerside connection of the filter (part 32). The dirtywater flows through the vertical grid elementa(part 17) where dirt is filtered out by the D.E.Coating. All grid elementa channel cleaned waterinto a manifold system (part 16) which exita atthe upper side connection (part 28) and throughthe control valve to return back to the pool. Bycontinuously diluting the dirty pool water withclean water, the entire pool becomes graduallycleaned. Your filter and pump should be sized tocirculate from 2 to 4 times the volume of water inthe entire pool through the filter every day toaccomplish the cleaning.

As dirt is collected in the coating of D.E. in thefilter, the pressure will rise and the flow of water

PAGE 2to the, pool will be reduced. See other sections inthe manual to determine when to clean the filterand how to choose the appropriate cleaningmethod. Thia filter will only remove luspendedmatter and docs not sanitize the pool. The poolmust be sanitited and PH balanced for sparklingclear water. Your filtration Iystem mUlt be con·figured and siz.ed to meet your local health coc!eI.

'Part no's in parenthesis refer to the replacement parts as shown in the exploded drawingat the end of the manual.

•• WARNING""'ailure to run your filter or inadequatefiltration can result in pool water claritythat could obstruct visability and allowdiving into or on top of obscured objectswhich can cause serious personal injuryor drowning.

Clear water is the result of proper filtration8S well 8S proper water chemistry. Pool chern·istry is a specializ.ed area and you should con·suIt your local pool service specialist for specific help or instructions. In general properpool sanitation requires a free chlorine level of1 to 2 PPM and a PH range of 7.2 to 7,6.

1. On a new pool, clean the pool before fillingwith water. Excess dirt and large particlescan cause damage to pump and filter.

C. IMTIAL START·UP

.. WARNING·'Chemical (urnes and/or spill, can causesevere corrosive attack to the filter andpump .tructural metallic components.Structurally weakened filter componentscan cause filter or valve attachments toblow off and could cause severe bodilyinjury or property damage.

2. Check clamp assembly for tightness. See fil·Ler disalJ.!lembly and assembly p~ures.

•• WARNING"Improper tank assembly could cause thetank top to blow orland cause severe bodilyinjury and/or property damage.

3. Move vslve handle to filter position. Openair bleeder screw (Item I) on the filtertop. Check pump strainer pol to be sure it isfull of water. Replace pump lid.

.. WARNING"Air enteri ng filter 8 nd/or the filter u nit notclosed correctly can cause the tank top toblow off and could cause severe bodilyinjury and/or property damage.

4. Open allsudion and return line valves. Standclear of filter during the following operations.

5. Start pump. The tank will fill with water andexpel! air from the air bleeder. Close the airbleeder screw only after a steady stream ofwater cornell out.

7. On a new pool installation, it will requireapproximately one week to obtain and main·tain the water clarity of which your filter iscapable. It is recommended to disassembleand clean the filter after initial pool clean up(approximately 48 hours ofoperation). Followthe instructions given in this manual for dis·assembly. cleaning and reassembly.

8. Be sure to note the operating pressure of thefilter when it is clean and properly chargedwith D.E. As the filter remOVell dirt from thepool, the pressure will gradually increase. Asa guide, when the pressure has increased 7 to10 psi from the initial reading, it is time tobackwash the filter.

Alternately another method for determiningwhen to backwash the filter is by judging a dropin the amount of water flowing from the filter byobserving the flow from the inlet fittings in thewall of the pool. As a general rule, backwashingis needed when the flow rate becomes about 213the rate of a clean filter.

D. FILTER DISASSEMBLY/ ASSEMBLY

6. Remove the skimmer lid, put the recommend·ed amount of diatomaceous earth (D.E.) intothe skimmer. The D.E. will be drawn into thefilter and deposited evenly upon the grid elemenl.ll. Now the filter is providing the poolwith bright, clean water.

NOTICE: Do not operate filter without D.E.charge for more than two minutes. Do not usemore than the recommended amount of D.E. inyour filter.

Before Disassembling Filter.Backwash filter according to instructions under"Filter Backwash Procedure" but stop after in·struction if7. Do not precoat with new D.E.

DISASSEMBLY:I. Be sure pump is turned off and all pressure

haa been released from system.
