By-Laws Vote Passes! Upcoming PHNA Board Election!In the recent By-Laws election we had 40 ballots cast. The proposed

PHNA By-Laws changes were adopted by the members by a 72% approval margin.

29 voted yes 11 voted no

Among other minor changes, the following were approved:

The small group of homes on Westover, west end of Jefferson, have been added to the neighborhood. Please join us in welcoming these new neighbors to the association! We hope to see many of them at the October neighborhood picnic.

The new By-Laws will provide flexibility for the size of the Board to be enlarged from five to as many as nine members based on the interest of the membership in serving. The Board size increase will allow committee chairs to function more closely with the Board as officers.

The amended version of the By-Laws can be viewed on the Pemberton Heights website.

Due to the recent By-Laws change, 6 positions will be available for election on the next year’s board.

Nominations for Board members must have been received by 5:00 pm on October 1st.

The ballot will be finalized by October 10 and voting will begin November 2. Ballots may be viewed on the website and Nextdoor.

You must be a dues paying member prior to November 15 in order to cast a vote. Please consider joining and paying your dues at the October 20th neighborhood picnic. The current Board and candidates will be available for conversation and questions.

All ballots must be mailed to the PHNA P.O. Box. by November 15.

Pemberton Heights Neighborhood Picnic

Please RSVP for the Pemberton Heights neighborhood picnic – a wonderful chance to meet and socialize with neighbors.

The Pemberton Heights neighborhood picnic is an annual tradition held on Jean Mueller’s empty lot at 1404 Wooldridge. It’s a great chance to socialize with your neighbors, meet new ones and sign up for the annual neighborhood carriage rides held in December.

Fa ll FundraiserPEASE PARK CONSERVANCY’S

The Pease Park Conservancy’s sixth annual Fall Fundraiser is scheduled for Thursday evening, October 24th from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the historic Caswell House located at 1404 West Avenue. This year it will feature music by the Liz Morphis Jazz band, direct from Austin’s Elephant Room, and catering by Word of Mouth. Tickets are $100 per person and are available at the door.

This year all of the proceeds of the event will go to help fund the new Master Plan for Pease Park and the Shoal Creek Greenbelt that the Conservancy is undertaking in partnership with the City of Austin’s Parks and Recreation Department. The Master Plan will be kicked off in October with the first public meeting expected to be scheduled for late November, 2013.

The event will be highlighted by the presentation of a short film on the Master Plan, detailing the importance of the park and the Greenbelt to Austin and featuring remarks from Gay Gaddis, Andy Fish, Carolyn Long and Jill Nokes.

The Conservancy hopes all of its friends and supporters in Pemberton Heights will join them for a fun evening celebrating the progress that has been made in Pease and help them lay the foundation for more progress yet to come!

Shoal Creek ConservancyTO HOST GUIDED WALKS ALONG SHOAL CREEK

DURING OCTOBER

Shoal Creek Conservancy will be hosting a series of walking tours on the creek led by naturalist, historian and world-renowned photographer Ted Eubanks in partnership with Preservation Austin and other local organizations. (Continued on page 4)

The walks will be held every Saturday morning in October and will include a historic bridge tour, nature and history walks of the northern and southern reaches of the creek, and a birding tour. All walks will begin at the south entrance of Pease Park at 9 a.m. All ages are welcome.

Pemberton Heights ResidentHosts Coffee for Neighbors,

AT&T RepresentativesOn August 22, Sabrina Brown hosted an informal coffee in

her Pemberton Heights home for neighbors who had questions or concerns about their U-verse or other AT&T services.

“As a government affairs consultant for AT&T, I know that AT&T values customer feedback and is committed to resolving customer concerns as quickly as possible,” said Brown. “I was so pleased to have this opportunity to play a role in helping to bring together my neighbors and AT&T representatives in this casual but productive setting.”

The coffee enabled AT&T representatives to meet one-on-one with Pemberton Heights neighbors about any issues they were having with their AT&T services. AT&T is working hard to address all concerns as quickly as possible.

AIA Austin Annual Home Tour to feature 13 exquisite homesThe local Austin residential construction market is a bright star

in the national economy.The Austin chapter of the American Institute of Architects will

hold its 27th Annual Home Tour the weekend of November 2 and 3. 13 homes will be featured, including the two in Tarrytown, two in Clarksville and one on Shoal Creek.

The home tour will run from 10:00 until 6 Saturday and Sunday. The tour is self guided and over 5,000 attendees are expected to be wowed by the vary of talent on display at homes from small and affordable to luxurious. The tour hosted by AIA Austin has gained a national and regional reputation for excellence in residential design.

Master Plan Process for Pease Park to Begin

The Pease Park Conservancy has selected WRT (Wallace, Roberts & Todd, LLC) as landscape architects to prepare a Master Plan for Pease Park and an adjacent portion of the Shoal Creek Greenbelt north of the park. The Master Plan will provide a long-range vision to guide the further restoration and preservation of this historic green space located in central Austin. Since 2008, the Pease Park Conservancy has led efforts to improve the area’s landscape, including planting 500 new trees and restoring historic features in the park, such as the Tudor Cottage and Memorial Entry Gates constructed in the 1920s and the picnic tables installed by the Works Progress Administration.

WRT and the Pease Park Conservancy will undertake the Master Plan process in close partnership with the City of Austin. An integral part of the process will include a series of public stakeholder meetings and surveys designed

to solicit input from various members of and stakeholders in the Austin community, including residents from Pemberton Heights who use the park and the greenbelt. This public input will be used to create a feasible and sustainable blueprint for the recreational development and ecological restoration of the park in the future. The Austin Parks and Recreational Department, Austin Parks and Recreation Board and City Council must review and approve the Master Plan before its presentation to the City of Council for final approval.

“We hope the Master Plan process can begin this fall and be completed in less than a year,” said Richard Craig, the Pease Park Conservancy’s chairman. “We are very excited to work with WRT to ensure the future of this beloved natural refuge in the heart of our city.”
