Dear Neighbors, The recently elected PHNA Board would like to take this

opportunity to introduce itself, update you on recent events, and outline some its goals for the upcoming year. As you are reading this please remember that this is your Association, and thus if you find an important personal issue missing or have any questions, you are always encouraged to contact any of your Board Members.

The PHNA conducted a Board meeting and “Town Hall” on Monday, February 4, 2013 at 6:30 p.m. at the Senior Activity Center. The meeting was very well attended by members of the PHNA, and the Board elected Officers and Committee Chairs. Craig Duewall was elected Vice President, Corey Breed was elected Treasurer, Carla Hatler was elected Secretary, and Diane Umstead was elected Member at Large.

The Committee Chairs were elected as follows: City of Austin Committee: Diane Umstead; Traffic, Sidewalks, MoPac: Diane Umstead; Finance: Corey Breed; Administration: Carla Hatler; Social: Carla Hatler; Communications: Carla Hatler, Co-Chair: Corey Breed; and Special Projects: Craig Duewall. You are encouraged to participate in any Committees wherein you have interest.

On February 5th the Board regretfully accepted Jeff Minch’s resignation as the President of the PHNA. Jeff was also serving as the Security Chair and Corey Breed has agreed to Chair the Security Committee following Jeff’s resignation. The PHNA Security Patrol continues to patrol our neighborhood, residents are still able to utilize the Home-Away List via the PHNA webpage, and anyone who has donated to the PHNA Security Program can rest assured that the

program will continue. The PHNA will also continue to solicit donations for the Security Program and maintaining the Security Program is one of the Board’s top priorities.

Following Jeff Minch’s resignation as President, the PHNA Board quickly conducted an executive meeting on Sunday, February 10, 2013. Jeff has been very helpful during the Board’s transition. The Board is grateful for Jeff’s service and will undoubtedly continue to rely upon his institutional knowledge and experience.

Jeff’s resignation raises two immediate issues (1) naming a new President and (2) filling the vacant Board position. The PHNA Bylaws generally provide that the Vice President shall become the President when the President resigns, and the Board has approximately 60 days to appoint a new Board member.

During its meeting on February 10th, the Board unanimously agreed that Craig Duewall would become the President, Diane Umstead would become the Vice President, and the Board would solicit names of interested individuals who would like to be considered for appointment to the vacant Board position. This unanimous Board action still must be ratified at the Board’s next meeting.

If you are interested in being considered for the vacant Board position, please communicate your interest to PHNA Board Secretary, Carla Hatler.

Speaking of Board meetings, the Board is committed to conducting regularly scheduled Board Meetings and members are always encouraged to attend.

The next Board meeting is Tuesday, March 26, 2013. Additional

Board meetings have been scheduled for the second Wednesday of each month: April 10th, May 8th, June 12th, July 10th, August 14th, September 11th, October 9th, November 13th, and December 11th. Unless otherwise provided via notice, the Board meetings shall start at 6:30 p.m. and shall take place at Howson Library, 2500 Exposition Blvd. There will be time set-aside at the end of each Board meeting for members to ask questions and provide input.

During the Board Meeting and “Town Hall” on February 4th, the issue that attracted the most discussion was “public discourse” and “PHNA communications.” The Board has taken immediate action and has adopted a new policy regarding Board communications. Going forward, all Board communications (including PHNA blog posts) must be approved by at least two Board members. Additionally, the Board is committed to adopting rules to govern Net-Etiquette that will hopefully facilitate respectfully communications via NextDoor and PHNA Alerts.

The recent PHNA member survey identified (1) safety, (2) traffic (3) governmental issues (development), and (4) membership/social, as issues important to the members of the PHNA.

As stated above, the PHNA Security Program and the Security Patrols have not missed a beat and the Board is committed to maintaining the Security Program. Cut-through traffic will continue to have an adverse impact on our neighborhood, but the Board is committed to discussing and supporting additional traffic calming strategies that may be available to Pemberton Heights. The Board (specifically Diane Umstead) is committed to monitoring proposals and actions of the City of Austin and neighborhood groups that may impact our neighborhood and she will regularly update the PHNA Board and membership about important issues. And lastly, the Board will do its best to facilitate more community activities and solicit additional participation in the PHNA by neighbors that are not currently involved.

The Board is excited about this opportunity to serve and represent the best neighborhood in the City of Austin. We also ask for, and look forward to, your involvement.

Sincerely,Craig DuewallPresident, Pemberton Heights Neighborhood Association

The Pemberton JournalSha Klatt Ignites Champions

Our neighbor, Sha Klatt, coaches  winners. They aren’t kids or students in high school or college; they’re women in their 40’s, 50’s and 60’s who show up twice a week for a brisk workout in the pool. Sha (pronounced SHAY), 54, and husband Mike, 57, moved into their house on Hardouin in 1989. They raised three kids there: daughter Sydney works in political campaign fundraising, Sam who now works in the Austin film and digital media industry, and their youngest, Ben, a senior at Austin High. The Klatts met in Waco while she was in college and Mike studied law at Baylor. They decided to settle in Austin where he had done his undergraduate work at UT and spent a few years teaching at Anderson High before heading up to his hometown of Waco for law school. Sha says, “Mike’s had a successful legal career but part of him still thinks about about a return to teaching after he retires from the law.  He’s even contacted the AISD to check out whether that could work some day!”

Sha coaches swimming as part of IGNITE, a women’s fitness and wellness program built on the belief in the benefits of exercising as a group, outdoors. She swam competitively from 3rd grade through high school, then taught swimming and coached when she got to college.

Although the goal isn’t competitive swimming, she trains a few unlikely triathletes  including  Jane Hayman, 61, of Wooldridge who finished 11th in her age bracket in the Danskin Women’s Triathlon last year. “Nowadays, my coaching isn’t about speed. It’s about healthy movement.”  Sha is quick to point out, “We aim to challenge bodies   and spirits. Chasing dreams is part of it too.”

Sha works with all levels of swimming proficiency. She helps beginners relax and trust. “I remind them that water holds up huge ships. We start together by finding their ‘float’ point. My novice swimmers want to become stronger and more efficient and confident in the water, and the advanced swimmers work to build strength

and endurance. The target is full body toning. We just shove water instead of lifting weights. “

“IGNITE isn’t a bootcamp and it’s not just swimming. It’s also yoga, cross-training, Pilates, and more” Sha explains. “It’s a group of women gathering for outdoor fitness experiences. The focus is on whole body wellness, and emphasizing fun.”

In addition to the swimmers, other Pemberton women pursue fitness goals through the IGNITE program. For example, Leslie McConnico , 55,  of Hardouin, is a regular at the cross-training and yoga classes. “I like to go first thing in the morning. I really like the fact that the classes are outside.”

Aimee Laughlin, 55, of Harris Blvd., appreciates the  laughter and non-competitive atmosphere in the workouts. She’s a regular at the cardio circuit sessions conducted in Rollingwood park. “They’re great for low impact resistance training. Doing this outdoors is wonderful.”

“In IGNITE, neighbors and friends set and reach goals, push outside of comfort zones, and celebrate accomplishments together. “What could be better?  Sha can be reached at [email protected].

PEMBERTON HEIGHTS CIRCLE OF LIFE

ANNOUCEMENTSAs Pemberton evolves as a neighborhood, along with the joys

of new arrivals, we mourn the loss of a longtime friend.Neighbor and New Board member, Carla Hatler is proud to

announce the birth of her second daughter, Harper Rose. Harper became an Austin resident on December 3, 2012 at 10:42 am, joining big sister Hannah and proud papa Billy. A happy little girl, she is growing from her birth weight of 7 pounds, 1 ounce.

Long time neighbor Kathryn Anderson is also happy and proud to announce the birth of her new granddaughter Tatiana, born Jan 14th. Tatiana, Mom Emily and Birth mother Natasha are all doing fine.

Longtime neighbor Alice Cromer Long passed away earlier this month. She was 98 years old. Alice was born in 1914 in Kentucky, but relocated to Austin after living in the Washington, DC area. She married Walter Long in 1950. Walter was a native Austinite, born to the Long Family, who later lived at #1 Green Lane. Alice and Walter bought their home at 1013 Gaston in 1954 and after Walter’s death, Alice remained in the home, living in the neighborhood for almost 60 years. Alice was a great friend, neighbor and a talented watercolorist who will be missed.

If you have announcements of births or other life events you would like to share with neighbors, please feel free to send them to [email protected]

PEMBERTON PET OF THE MONTH:

Teddy Weinberger

--nominated by Tina Weinberger“Our precious Bichon, Teddy, is Claire Avenue’s emotional

heart and its first line of defense. When you look at him, all you see is a soft, cuddly pillow with huge, black eyes set against a halo of pure white fluff.  Children rub their faces in his curly fur and caress his little neck while he licks them affectionately. Like a stuffed animal come to life, he was engineered to cuddle.

Those who know him best, though, say that he is more than just a pretty face.  As he lounges on the front lawn, those eyes scrutinize the street for aggressive breeds, darting back and forth on his stubby but nimble legs, warning all who pass that his territory is not to be messed with or on.  Sure, he barks relentlessly at passersby, but also extends a friendly nose-in-the-butt to newcomers.  He’s everything a dog should be:  sweet as a bunny but tough as a bulldog, a loving, gentle powder puff who’s not afraid of the dark.

He has no puppies of his own—we fixed that—but he practically raised our sons, who fell asleep every night with Teddy in their arms.  Under Teddy’s guidance they turned into studly young men who water the lawn regularly, watch out for their neighbors’ cats, and treat the mail carriers with respect.  Teddy taught them all that. Sure, he flunked out of obedience school and has “accidents”—heck, who among us of a certain age doesn’t?”

OreoPlayful, easy-going, and friendly best describes Oreo. An 8 year old

Terrior-Jack Russell mix, he enjoys his stuffed toys, playing fetch and tug. He loves treats and will go into his bag of tricks to get them. Sit, stay and come are just a few skills he has learned. Oreo also walks well on leash and is housetrained. He is happiest around people and wags his little tail excitedly to greet you. If you are looking for a sweet cuddle buddy who wants nothing more than to love on you and share his happiness, bring Oreo home with you.

CORAZONCorazon is named for the perfect heart in the middle of her chest. It

seems like no accident that this perfect heart is there...Corazon is one of the most loving dogs you’ll find. An 8 year old Retriever-Labrador mix, she's a sweet, calm girl, she is a big cuddlebug. While she loves petting time, Corazon also likes to go on walks. Because she enjoys being outside, the ideal home for her is one with a nice backyard, where she can lay in the sun. She needs a home without cats.

Go to www.AustinPetsAlive.org and look through AVAILABLE DOGS to find these two and other pets looking for a good home.

2 great dogs are available for adoption

Several Pemberton Heights homes have Peter Mansbendel carvings.  Most recently, a Mansbendel front door was discovered in the garage of the Knippa-Huffman House at 2414 Harris Boulevard, where it had been stored for 50 years.  It has since been restored and replaced.

Peter Mansbendel was born in Switzerland in 1883.  At the age of ten, he knew he wanted to become a woodcarver.  He trained in Switzerland, London, and Paris, before working in Boston and New York.  While in New York, he met Clothilde Shipe, the daughter of Colonel Monroe Shipe, who developed Hyde Park in Austin.  They married in 1911 and Mansbendel opened a studio in Austin.  During the 1920s and 1930s, leading architects in Austin, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio sought Mansbendel to provide carvings that would add a touch of distinction to their projects.  He also provided carved doors for the Spanish Governor’s Palace in San Antonio and portrait medallions for the University of Texas.

The above is adapted from pp. 55 and 120 of Austin’s Pemberton Heights, a photo history of the neighborhood written by Suzanne Deaderick and Elizabeth Cash. For more information about the book, go to www.austins-pemberton-heights.com.

The photograph is courtesy of Doug Oliver.  Doug is a Texas

woodcarver in the Mansbendel tradition who has created an extensive website and a book dedicated to documenting Peter Mansbendel’s life and work.  For more information, visit www.petermansbendel.com.
