The Pemberton JournalIt has been an interesting five months here in Pemberton Heights.

As many of you are aware, the PHNA had dwindled over the past few years and the board had become a virtual board. Recognizing the continued interest in the PHNA by our neighbors, a new set of bylaws was adopted and a spirited election came to be. Time will tell if it is an honor or a sacrifice that I was elected President, but as of now, I look forward to working with as many residents of Pemberton Heights as want to be involved in the association.

The new board of directors of the PHNA has carefully structured a program of committees in hopes that residents can have input to the programs and issues that involve the PHNA. The new contact list here in this newsletter will allow you to direct your interests and concerns to the appropriate group for discussion and recommended action as may be necessary. It is the hope of the board of directors that this will give all of the residents of Pemberton Heights a voice and an opportunity to participate and be informed.

In our recent survey, the comments received indicate that overall the security is a key issue. The ranking of the other items are as follows:

• Transportation / Traffic, 68.1%• Land Use / Zoning, 63.7%• Neighborhood Design, 62.7%• Triangle Parks, 60.7%• MoPAC Improvements, 59.6%• PHNA Organization, 48.7%• Social Functions, 42.9%

These and any other issues will be addressed at the committee level, so I encourage all of you to contact the committee responsible for your issue, and get involved.

Welcome to all the new neighbors in the Pemberton Heights area!

Whether you have just moved to the area, or have been here a while, a group of neighbors would like to host a newcomers (and old timers) lunch each month.

We are dedicated to introducing residents to our neighborhood and sharing the opportunity to meet and make new friends, whether you are brand new to the neighborhood, been here a few years ( like me) or are a third generation resident ( like Molly).

WHERE AND WHEN:

The initial date is the second Wednesday of each month. At 11:45 at Russell’s at Kerby Lane.

COST:

The only cost to join is the lunch you select from the menu. Each attendee will pay for their own meal by separate check.

All neighbors are invited to attend and get to know each other. Your hosts in March will be Betty Trent, Tina Weinberger and Molly Dougherty.

Pemberton Heights Neighborhood AssociationMinutes from Board of Directors Meeting

The meeting was called to order by Fred Robinson. The election results were reviewed. A motion was made to accept the final recording of the ballots and to discard the election ballots by Jeff Minch, seconded by Polly Swain. The resolution was adopted, there were no dissents.

The board then discussed the following selection of officers and positions for the board: Fred Robinson- President, Jeff Minch- Vice President, Laura Sharp- Secretary, Polly Swain- Treasurer, Carl Williams- at-large. The motion by Jeff Minch and second by Polly Swain to accept these designations of positions was unanimously decided.

A discussion was held regarding the term limits. President is automatically one year and Vice President is automatically two years. The remainder were decided by drawing straws with the longest straw serving for two years. After Polly Swain drew the only long straw, Laura Sharp moved and Jeff Minch seconded the resolution for that Fred Robinson, Laura Sharp and Carl Williams would serve for one year and Jeff Minch and Polly Swain would serve for two years. The resolution carried unanimously.

Next was a discussion about committees. Committees will add involvement by other PHNA members and are the appropriate way to brainstorm and offer suggestions to be brought up by agenda on future board meetings. A list of committees was proposed and after discussion and some alterations, the list of initial committees was determined. Each board member was assigned a committee to chair. The list along with contact numbers for each board member will be posted on the website and people taking the survey can volunteer through the survey or by calling the board member for the committee directly. Some committees are likely to have smaller numbers than others because of the nature of the committee. Other special interest committees may be created for things such as special projects. Then Jeff Minch moved and Laura Sharp seconded a motion that the list of committees and board members responsible for each committee as reflected in Ex. A to Ex. 4 of the resolutions be adopted. This passed unanimously.

The next item discussed was a survey to be sent to all PHNA persons on the Listserv. The proposed questions were reviewed. There was some discussion to change the list of committees to mirror the committees determined by resolution number 4 above. There was further discussion that the number of persons that can answer without the program charging us is only 100 persons. Additional surveys may be posted in the future and this survey will be made available for 2 months and to new members. Betty Trent will provide information in the monthly news letter. A motion was made by Jeff Minch and seconded by Laura Sharp that the revised questionnaire be sent and, in addition, that an expenditure of up to $48 over a 2 month period could be made, if necessary, to increase the number of responses we may receive from 100 in order to see all responses. The motion carried unanimously.

There being no further business, a motion to adjourn by Jeff Minch was seconded by Polly Swain and all members agreed. Meeting was adjourned.

Time to consider replanting your garden.After last year’s brutal drought and heat, we in the central city

saw many of our favorite plants fail to thrive. Below is a short list of performers who were able to take the heat and manage to survive with once a week watering. Consider some of these for your new garden this year, as we may be in for several years of extreme heat and low rainfall. Thanks to Jana Elliott, AnnMarie Olson and others for their additions.

does really well here. • They can take full sun, and change colors as the flowers age. • Old Blush is also a very reliable, and there is a climber variety. • Martha Gonzales is a small shrub rose that does very well in

Austin.

Water Pressure UpdatesThe City is looking at improvements to be made to the water

utility lines in Pemberton.The engineers are currently studying the water pressure levels and

Every year more and more residents add wireless connectivity to their homes, whether for their laptops, IPads or other home control systems, but you need to be aware that your wireless footprint goes far beyond the walls in your home and into your neighbor’s property and the street.
