Dear Parents, This week we welcomed a world class performance group to Peacock Campus to share their music and culture with our students in Years 3-8.

The 26 students from multicultural backgrounds are students at St John’s College in Zimbabwe and have been conquering music awards not just in their home country but even as far away as Scotland where they won the Pipe Band Championships. The 2015 Eisteddfod organized by the Zimbabwe National Institute of Allied Arts saw St Johns obtain honours in a number of categories: Best Gospel Choir , Best African Contemporary, Best Traditional Choir and Best Jazz Band. Our Communities Update

This week the 6-8 community was privileged to be able to witness a stunning performance of Zimbabwean music from the St John’s School band as a part of their ‘Hakuna Matata’ tour. We were treated to beautiful, rhythmic singing and movement, as well as heart pumping Marimba playing. The students, staff and parents of NBC Peacock were mesmerized and uplifted by this wonderful experience. The young men in the band were charming, friendly and engaging. They have a concert at Costa Hall this coming Saturday night and we highly recommend seeing them in action. “The Zimbabwean St John’s School ‘Hakuna Matata’ tour to Australia visited our school on Tuesday and played some beautiful music. It was very exciting and I enjoyed it very much. I think everyone had a good time!” Nyawarga M “The singing and music group from Zimbabwe visited our school on Tuesday and showed us their talents in singing and performing. They had just arrived in Australia and we were the first school they visited. We were very fortunate to see them!!” Chol J

To St Johns College Thank you for your lovely performers it was so cool because it wasn’t like our music. My favorite part was when you guys played the marimbas.

Dear performers from St Johns College in Zimbabwe. Thank you for the brilliant talent and also thanks for coming to Australia and I love the beautiful voices that you guys have. When you guys were playing the instruments I was full of amazement the whole time! And I was clapping my hardest at the end of the performance and that was my favourite performance ever!

Dear performers from ST Johns college in Zimbabwe. Thank you for your brilliant performance at Northern Bay College. I loved how you guys played the marimbas, I also liked how everybody put so much energy into it. You guys were so good for words to describe! My favourite part was when you gave out Hi-Fives and how is it in Zimbabwe sincerely, Aziza. Peacock Campus VIC

To the performers from St Johns college in Zimbabwe, thank you for performing and coming to Australia. I really enjoyed your performance at our school and your voices are amazing. The thing that im-

pressed me the most was the co-ordination with the marimbas, you all stayed on tempo and did

everything on time. That’s why I’ll give you a number 9/10

Sincerely Ethan. G

Dear performers from ST Johns in Zimbabwe, Thank you for performing at our school first and doing a fantastic job of performing. I loved your beautiful voices and amazing marimba skills, rhythm and being able to go in sync, with one person starting and everyone else joining in, in time. I especially liked it when you sang in sync and made it sound like one person with an extraordinary loud voice with several different sounds being made at once, but it’s not one person there’s all of you sing the same song making it sound like many. You did such a good job it would be in the top five things in my life and I hope to see more of you. Thank you sincerely, Aidan C

NBC Music/Concert band news As we roll into term three I would like to keep the parents informed of happenings in the Instrumental Music dept. Just last week, the Concert band played in front of hundreds of people at the GPAC in Geelong as part of the Annual Geelong Schools Music/Movement Festival. It was a great success and featured the band which boasted over 30 young musicians. Some students were playing for the first time with the band and were thrilled to be out with the band and performing three songs in public. Our performance season has now begun and the next term brings more performances with the NBC campus tour and the “Music, Count us in” Day. Forms will go out for these in term four with all details. I would like to remind parents that the music students should be doing regular home practice as part of their commitment to music and this is something parents can take an active role in by reminding and encouraging the kids to get their instruments out and heard at home! Practise makes perfect!

Prep-2 Learning Community This week is National Science Week! The theme has been "Making Waves: The Science of Light". In 3-5 and 6-8, we have been ex-

ploring what happens to plants grown under different colours and controlling light with mirrors and lenses. We would especially like to thank our super enthusiastic 3-5 students for coming into the science lab to do some real experiments! Great work! In P-2 we combined light with the theme of 'Where does our food come from?' and made an edible candle, a disappearing glass and some fantastic mess with bicarb and vinegar explosions! All the prep to 2 students were fantastically behaved and very polite, even though they were very loud and excited! On Tuesday the 18th of August all the P-2 students participated in a science demonstration for National Science Week. Mr Bayard, the science teacher from the 6-8 Community came and did the presentation. Here are what some of the children had to say about the experience. Caitlen J “My favourite part was when vinegar and bi-carb soda got mixed and exploded and made a big mess”.

Sienna K “It was really good because there was a cup with oil in it and we didn’t know there were 2 cups because it looked like they were floating!”. Xzavier M “We learnt about what coke cans were the heaviest and lightest by putting them in a tank of water. The red can was the heaviest because it had more sugar in it”. Jack B “ I thought the bubbles from when the vinegar and bi-carb soda exploded would be hot but it wasn’t”.

KOORIE NEWS Another great session was held last

week at AIME (RMIT University).

The strength of this program was

evident when a group of our young

school. However they still wanted

to participate in the AIME experience, what deadly students!

Next AIME session is on 3rd September involving all year 9, 10 and 11

There is a concert at GPAC

Northern Bay College was well represented in the U/16 Geelong League Best & Fairest vote count tonight. (18/08/15) Jacob Sammut-Miljevic was Runner-Up in Div 4 (great effort considering North Shore did not win many games) and Titit Nyak (North Geelong) Winning the B&F in Div 3. Great Sports the both of them.

Congratulations for effort
