Dear Parishioners, Many of us may have asked some big questions about life and the world of 2020. The spring months are days away, the threat of COVID 19 is still around, unemployment is rising, and no one is too sure of his/her next plan of action. This weekend we will be reflecting on one of the big questions that Jesus asked his disciples; Who do people say the Son of Man is?The easiest thing for us is to appropriate Peters response; You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.How I wish that Peters response will be a guide for our responses to some of the big questions in our own lives. It is said that we are among the privileged parishes in terms of weekend Mass attendance despite the restrictions. Last weekend, we recorded more than 600 attendances across the Masses. We are able to book 130 people for each of our Masses. Please continue to book for the weekend Masses and you are welcome to book after 12 oclock on Saturday if you have attended Mass the previous weekend. The weekday Masses are continuing to be well attended and there is no need to book for these weekday Masses but your name, address and phone number will be checked at the front door. The added Wednesday evening Mass is still on and it was meant to serve those who are unable to attend weekday morning Masses. Our Church is now connected to the NBN and we now have a better quality live streaming of our Weekend Mass on Saturday evening. The cameras are high quality and the shots are almost excellent. This facility will also serve us during Easter, Christmas, Weddings, Funerals, Anniversaries and Parish functions held inside the Church. Thanks for your patience. We appreciate those parents who are journeying with their children through our Parish Sacramental Program. Recently, a number of our children had their First Rite of Reconciliation and just last week, 30 children were enrolled into the Sacramental Program in preparation for their First Holy Communion. Our RCIA program is operating and we congratulate Marissa Chong on her full initiation into the Church. Please keep them and their families in your prayers. There are a couple of retreat opportunities in the Parish. Thank you to the Men who were able to participate in the ACBC National Catholic Mens Gathering. We had a gathering in the Parish and would like to get feedback from private participants via email to - [email protected]. Fr Dan has also arranged a Jesuit Priest, Fr Richard Leonard, to give a Parish Mission retreat in Lent next year. There is a retreat organised for anyone who would like to attend on Saturday 29th August in the Jacaranda Room of the Paloma Centre. Fr Ray Sanchez, a Passionist Priest, has been organised to lead the Retreat from 9.30am to 5.00pm. Please call Marta on 0433 526 703 or Elmer on 0411 875 472 to register your interest in this Retreat. (See page 3 for more information.) We would like to thank Parishioners for their Planned Giving contributions which provide essential support for our Parish. The new Planned Giving envelopes are now available and can be collected from the tables located at both sides of the Church. Our Parish Teens had a very informative and lively youth night last week with one of our own Young Adults, Sarah. Thank you Sarah for that wonderful talk. We acknowledge the support that most parents give to their kids by bringing them to this program. Please continue to keep to the COVID safe requirements and pray that we remain free from the virus. Twenty First Sunday in Ordinary Time: Year A

First Reading: Isaiah 22: 19-23 The reading allows for God to declare who holds keys, who binds and frees. It also reminds us that when these powers are used out of alignment with the divine ways, a shake-up will come about. Second Reading: Romans 11: 33-36 The apostle to the gentiles is allowing us a sense of the mystery of God ’s love as unfathomable and without end. Gospel: Matthew 16: 13-20 The Gospel establishes the importance of the role of Peter amongst the followers, and goes on to the place of reconciliation within the Church.

CHAPTER FIVE

Spiritual Combat, Vigilance and Discernment

DISCERNMENT

Always in the light of the Lord

169. Discernment is necessary not only at extraordinary times, when we need to resolve grave problems and make crucial decisions. It is a means of spiritual combat for helping us to follow the Lord more faithfully. We need it at all times, to help us recognize God’s timetable, lest we fail to heed the promptings of his grace and disregard his invitation to grow. Often discernment is exercised in small and apparently irrelevant things, since greatness of spirit is manifested in simple everyday realities. It involves striving untrammelled for all that is great, better and more beautiful, while at the same time being concerned for the little things, for each day’s responsibilities and commitments. For this reason, I ask all Christians not to omit, in dialogue with the Lord, a sincere daily “examination of conscience”. Discernment also enables us to recognize the concrete means that the Lord provides in his mysterious and loving plan, to make us move beyond mere good intentions.

A supernatural gift

170. Certainly, spiritual discernment does not exclude existential, psychological, sociological or moral insights drawn from the human sciences. At the same time, it transcends them. Nor are the Church’s sound norms sufficient. We should always remember that discernment is a grace. Even though it includes reason and prudence, it goes beyond them, for it seeks a glimpse of that unique and mysterious plan that God has for each of us, which takes shape amid so many varied situations and limitations. It involves more than my temporal well-being, my satisfaction at having accomplished something useful, or even my desire for peace of mind. It has to do with the meaning of my life before the Father who knows and loves me, with the real purpose of my life, which nobody knows better than he. Ultimately, discernment leads to the wellspring of undying life: to know the Father, the only true God, and the one whom he has sent, Jesus Christ (cf. Jn 17:3). It requires no special abilities, nor is it only for the more intelligent or better educated. The Father

Youth and Young Adult Ministry

After a short scare, Teens gathered again last week to have a very deep and meaningful HOMIE night, which is a night based on life skills and relationships. This time we focused on racism , both in its extreme forms in the country as well as the subtle forms of micro-aggression. We started of with a funny yet meaningful game based on preferences and choices and transitioned into the main input of the night by Sarah, who has first hand experienced racism being a south Sudanese refugee who grew up in Egypt and settled in Australia for more than half her life; including due to the recent backlash on media surrounding the two Covid19+ women. Teens then had a solid time of discussion in small groups, followed by meditation (thank you Kylie for the live music) and singing songs together , like - “Receive the power” (Guy Sebastian) and “I am Australian.” It was such a powerful and worthwhile experience to have and share, especially as life skills to live in this beautiful, multicultural, melting pot of a country.
