Reflections on the Readings for 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time Year A

Introduction

We are gathered today as Christian community to express our common faith in Jesus. We believe that when we gather, Christ is present with us. As a gathered community we are the sacrament, the sign and presence of the risen Christ in the world. The gospel reminds us of the words of Jesus: ‘For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in their midst.’

First Reading: Ezekiel 33:7-9

In this reading we are reminded that we have an obligation to look out for our brothers and sisters. From time to time this may require us to challenge our brothers and sisters to change their lives and to return to an authentic life-giving relationship with God.

Second Reading: Romans 13:8-10

St Paul reminds us of the great Christian commandment to love our neighbour. He reminds the early Christian community that this love can be expressed by adherence to the commandments that respect life,

relationships and the property of others.

Gospel: Matthew 16:13-19

Fraternal correction was obviously a challenge within the early Christian Church, but the Gospel today reminds us that one of the ways that we express our love for our brothers and sisters in Christ is by challenging them when they have failed in their relationship with God and others.

You are all invited to enjoy, once again, the speakers we heard during FAITH14...back by popular demand!

Have you ever felt that Mass is a waste of time; that you’re not ‘getting anything out of it’? The truth is that many times we don’t get more out of Mass because we don’t bring much to it and we don’t understand what’s really happening. Recently I read an incredible book by Mark Hart called – Behold the Mystery. It breaks open the Mass in an attractive and easy to understand way. Over the next few newsletters we will be sharing parts of that book with you, so that you too can go deeper into the Mass! “The more proactive we are with God, the more responsive He is with us”. We can’t ‘out-give’ God. The more time we make to prepare for Mass, the more the sacred mystery of the Mass will come to life in our lives. Here are a few suggestions to be prepared:

Read the readings ahead of time - Our Church actually encourages and expects that we prayerfully read and contemplate the readings beforehand, if you do this one small thing, the readings will become so much more relevant and the homily will start to make sense!

Go to Confession if you need to. The Sacrament of Confession allows

us to remove all the barriers that we have allowed sin to put up in our hearts so that we can truly open up our hearts to all that God has for us.

Think about what petitions (prayers) you want to bring with you – what do you need prayer for, what do you need guidance with, or for what are you grateful? Bring all these to the foot of the altar and trust that God will listen.

Take a page out of the Magi’s (the wise men) book: show up, bring your gifts, put them at His feet and worship Him. It’s really that simple. We look forward to breaking open the Mass with you over the next few weeks! For in understanding the ‘what’ of the Mass, we will more clearly

see the ‘why’ we do it!
