What is a wireless environment?

An environment in which technology allows an electronic device to exchange data wirelessly over a computer network

Pearland ISD’s wireless network

Teachers and students will have a wireless network called “BYOD” available while in school

Students will use their school login to access the BYOD network

The BYOD network includes filtered Internet access, just as if the students were logging into a school computer

It is part of the District’s Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) that students will use this network while in school

What is mobile learning?

Learning that happens when the learner takes advantage of the learning opportunities offered by mobile technologies

Students will be allowed to bring their own devices to use during assignments

The goal is to allow teachers and students to work and learn together in a technology-rich environment

Point of Concept (POC):GT Academy opened in August 2011 with a wireless network, enabling the BYOD program

Pilot:Sablatura Middle School and Pearland Jr. High West became fully wireless in fall of 2012 and began BYOD in January 2013

Use mobile learning in their classroom to allow students to use devices during instruction (at teacher discretion).

Do I need to buy a wireless device?No. It is merely an option.

If I do buy a wireless device, should I buy a certain kind?No. BYOD activities will be DNA (device neutral activities). Mobile learning devices are a very personal decision and can range anywhere from an old cell phone with no data plan that has wireless capabilities to the newest tablet or laptop.

Will my child suffer if I do not buy a device?No. BYOD activities generally fall into two categories: ◦ Group activities◦ Individual preference for acquiring knowledge
