and BYOD
Coming 2013-2014
Pearland ISD
What’s It All About?
It isn’t about students learning all new programs and devices,
but allowing students to use what they know,
share what they know,
andlearn to discover
what they don’t know.
From BYOD: What We're LearningA Haiku Deck by Johnny Bevacqua
Some phrases to know…
What is a wireless environment?
An environment in which technology allows an electronic device to exchange data wirelessly over a computer network
Wi-Fi
Pearland ISD’s wireless network
Teachers and students will have a wireless network called “BYOD” available while in school
Students will use their school login to access the BYOD network
The BYOD network includes filtered Internet access, just as if the students were logging into a school computer
It is part of the District’s Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) that students will use this network while in school
What is mobile learning?
Learning that happens when the learner takes advantage of the learning opportunities offered by mobile technologies
Wi-Fi allows for mobile learning
“Bring Your Own Device”
Students will be allowed to bring their own devices to use during assignments
The goal is to allow teachers and students to work and learn together in a technology-rich environment

How does this affect the
classroom?
The curriculum will not change…
…simply the options for different methods
to teach it.
DNA for BYOD‘Device Neutral Activities’
GOAL:Change the media, not the content.
Use mobile learning in their classroom to allow students to use devices during instruction (at teacher discretion).
Model safe use of Internet and devices
Actively monitor students and device
Share cool apps and Web tools
Teachers will:
Notify students ahead of time to on when to bring devices
Set up ground rules or a Digital Classroom Contract
Set Expectations for work/participation before getting
started
Pair or group students with like devices to assist each
other
◦ (Apple users, Android users, etc.)
Devices on desktop at all times
In the Classroom:“Ask 3 Before Me” motto
Be good digital citizens Use technology for instructional purposes
only Sign new district AUP Understand consequences associated with
improper use of devices Learn and use virtual
desktop
Students will:
Do I need to buy a wireless device? No. It is merely an option.
If I do buy a wireless device, should I buy a certain kind? No. BYOD activities will be DNA (device neutral activities). Mobile learning devices are a very personal decision and can range anywhere from an old cell phone with no data plan that has wireless capabilities to the newest tablet or laptop.
Will my child suffer if I do not buy a device? No. BYOD activities generally fall into two categories: ◦ Group activities◦ Individual preference for acquiring knowledge
