Let me say Save The Date. You might hear that a lot this time of year. I want you to save the date for November 26. That night at 7 pm, Topsail Presbyerteri-an Church is hosting a Thanksgiving Worship Service. This is a community worship service and all of Hampstead is invited. The Story Behind “ETERNAL FATHER, STRONG TO SAVE”

The text of this hymn was written as a prayer for people traveling on the sea by Wil-liam Whiting, the choirmaster of the Winchester College Chorister’s School in Win-

chester, England, in 1869. Verse 1 is addressed to God the Father, verse 2 to God the Son, verse 3 to God the Holy Spirit, and verse 4 to the Trinity. The melody was writ-

ten by composer John B. Dykes, who named it Melita after the island where Paul was shipwrecked in Acts 27.

Since then over 101 verses have been added for every type of military service and

occasion including this patriotic verse:

O God, for these United States We seek the bond thy love creates. May patriots dwell within our shore Through thy great strength forevermore. Where’er the stars and stripes unfurl May freedom shine to all the world.

We honor our veterans with this hymn on Sunday, November 10.
