JA VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! Junior Achievement

Experience @ Kapa’a High

Three students from Kapa'a High shared their first hand experiences with JA. One of the students, Carson, got up to speak. He had gone through the JA Personal Finance program at the end of his sophomore year. He then went on to become a founding member of the Warrior Credit Union, a student led bank created with KCFCU. Noteworthy was that not only did he get personal budgeting tips from the class but career inspiration as well. "I actually didn't know what I wanted to do until; Mr. G came in and spoke to our class. Now I know that I am going to do what he did for a living and I'm excited about going to school for it."

This is one story of many that demonstrates the impact that we can have on our local students’ lives. They are listening and looking for positive role models in our community to inspire them.

JA Kaua'i will be teaching Entrepreneurship and Personal Finance again next semester. Looking for KHS parents who would like to share their expertise with our students please contact: Ivory Lloyd at [email protected]

JA Quick Snapshot of Our Year Ahead We have reached over 1000 students and aim to double that by the end of the next school year. We are creating a model on how to integrate JA into the high school system with the great leadership of Kapa'a High School. It started with JA Career Success in the 9th grade, followed by JA Be Entrepreneurial in 10th, piloting JA Job Shadow in 11th and JA Personal Finance on-line in 12th Grade.

Our High School Programs With the help of KCFCU, the students at Kapa'a High not only started their own bank on campus but they mentored students at Kaua'i High to open their own student led branch. Financial literacy is expanding across our island and we are excited to be along for the ride.

On behalf of our student led Warrior Credit Union, we Thank YOU for your continued support!!! Parents you can still visit any KCFCU branch and open a student saving and checking account enabling your child(ren) to participate in the Warrior Credit Union experience! A valid student I.D., birth certificate, and social security card are required to open an account. Any questions may be answered upon your visit. Make sure to mention your interest in the Warrior Credit Union (WCU).

Go WARRIORS!

Congratulations Ms. Chris Farina and her students for a very successful business plan competition. Students did a great job in their business presentations and certainly displayed confidence when addressing questions from the Shark panel. Kudos to the winning business team: "Power Paddle" represented by Joel Deblin, Aukai Kessler, Forest Middleton, & Carson Schmick.

Ms. Farina needs to be acknowledged for her diligent work building a wonderful entrepreneurial program over the years reflecting a solid benchmark learning program. I'm sure she will pass this on to the next teacher with mixed emotions and with a willingness to mentor! Awesome job! - ADMIN & STAFF

Feedback from the seniors has been very positive as they get to interact with local business people who lend that touch of reality. This two day reality fair provides seniors that culminating hands-on experience after four years of financial literacy/CTE pathway skills. Special thanks to Cheryl Morita, Waianela Boiser, Business Academy students, Financial Reality Foundation and our community business partners for such a great job today. ADMIN & STAFF

It’s time to Get REAL... The Get REAL Financial Reality Fair provides students with an opportunity to:

Can your teen handle school & a part-time job? Having a part-time job can help teens learn responsibility. But it can also overwhelm their ability to focus on schoolwork. Answer yes or no to the questions below to see if your teen is ready to balance school and a job: ___1. Does your teen show you that she can use time responsibly? Are you confident that she can handle her schoolwork and a job? ___2. Have you set a limit on the total number of hours your teen can work? ___3. Have you told your teen that if her grades suffer, she will have to quit her job? ___4. Have you and your teen developed a plan for how she will spend the money she earns? ___5. Have you and your teen discussed how she will get back and forth to work without disrupting your entire family?

How well are you doing? More yes answers mean you and your teen are prepared for her to get a job. For no answers, try those ideas in the quiz.

During the holiday season, Americans gain about an average of one to two pounds. While this weight gain isn’t dramatic, research shows it tends to stay and accumulate over the years. To help us avoid this, being aware of why we are eating, what we are eating, and what is happening around us while we eat may help. Mindful eating is all about helping us understand our eating habits and creating a positive relationship with food. We should base our meals on physical cues, such as our body’s hunger signals instead of emotional ones like eating for comfort. Mindful eating is more about how we eat instead of what we eat. Studies have shown that being mindful of what we eat benefits those with cardiovascular disease, depression, chronic pain, and cancer.

Remember to make sure you don’t skip meals during the holidays. Many prepare for the BIG dinner by thinking that if they skip meals earlier in the day, this will allow them to eat more later. This is setting us up to over eat. Most of us see all the delicious food on the table and want to consume more than what will make us satisfied. Therefore, continue with your daily eating routine during the holidays and listen to your body so you stop eating when you feel satisfied. Healthy Substitutions

Cooking: x Instead of butter, use vegetable or olive

oil. x Instead of white breads, use whole-

grain breads. x Instead of frying vegetables, bake, grill,

or steam them. x Use herbs and spices like rosemary to

flavor dishes instead of salt or butter.

Baking: x Instead of butter, use equal parts cinnamon-

flavored, no sugar added applesauce. x Instead of whole or heavy cream, use low-fat

or skim milk. x Instead of sugar or butter, use vanilla,

almond, or peppermint extracts to add flavor.

Beverages: x Use spices, like cinnamon and

cloves instead of adding sugar to sweeten cider.

x To add flavor to water, try adding fruits like lemons, limes, oranges, strawberries, or watermelons.

Tips: x Eat reasonable portions. Use a smaller plate

to help control the amount of food you take. x Go easy on the toppings, gravy, and

dressings. These are usually packed with sugar or have a higher fat content.

x Be aware of what you are eating. The more calories you consume, the more energy you would need to expend to maintain weight.
