It is hard to believe that we are so close to the end of another school year. The beginning of April finds us on Easter break escaping the cold weather and the cold germs in whatever way we can. We hope that you and your family are able to use this opportunity to spend some time together to share conversation, laughter and meals – things that our busy schedules may prevent us from doing when school is in session. Hopefully you will also be able to spend some time attending the liturgical celebrations of Holy Week and especially the joyous celebration of Easter morning. What better way for a family to reconnect than to participate together in the rituals of the Church in which we are also family members? As the school year draws to a close, I would also like to put out an appeal to all parents to be a part of our Parent Association. We have a dedicated but small group of parents who have worked very hard this year to provide and support events that benefit your daughter. One of the hallmarks of a Mercy education is parents in partnership. We need your input and your support in making the Par- ent Association an active and vital organization that will benefit all of our girls. The next meeting will be held Thursday, April 24, 2007 at 7:00 PM in the MMA dining hall and we need you to attend, get involved and make the Parent Asso- ciation a thriving organization. Prom season will be upon us very soon. Our own Junior and Senior proms will take place and your daughter may be invited to a prom at another school. Which- ever events she attends, keep the lines of communication open. Know your daughter’s plans for the evening and speak with her date’s parents or the parents of the friends she will be traveling with. Our highest priority is the safety of all of our students and their guests. We know that is your priority too. Enclosed in this mailing is a booklet about proms and graduations. Please read this booklet for advice on how best to protect your daughter. The administration, faculty and staff of Mount Mercy Academy wish you a happy and holy Easter Season. OUR DAY AT SABAH By: Lynn Goosman, MMA Sophomore

This year for our sopho-more retreat we went in a new direc-tion. Usually every class gets one day a year when they go to Harvest House and talk with their peers about the different pressures and stress that they face. Instead of our sophomore class going to Harvest House, we split up into our individual religion classes and spent the day at SABAH. SABAH stands for “Skating Athletes Bold At Heart.” This organization helps physically disabled children get a day to just have fun and maybe do a little ice skating. Our retreat to SABAH was not only about helping others, but also about learning and growing spiritually. We have come to witness first hand that just because somebody has different capabilities than us or doesn’t look the same as we doesn’t mean that they are any less than a human being. One of our main responsibilities on our retreat was helping the children to ice skate. If they fell they got right back up and tried again. Seeing the joy on their faces while they were ice skating is truly an indescribable thing. One of my fellow sophomores, Meghan Seager, described the retreat in one word. “Overwhelming.” That got me thinking. It must be extremely overwhelming for the par-ents of those children to have to take care of everything in there own lives and in the life of their child. They love their child despite the fact that he/she is different from other kids. It probably tears them up inside that their son/daughter doesn’t have the same opportunities as other kids their age. It must be a great relief to be able to take their child to SABAH and see them have a fun time. If there is one thing we are taught here at Mercy, it is that we should serve those who are less fortunate than ourselves. Here at Mount Mercy our prime example of one serving many is Catherine McAuley. Catherine McAuley saw everybody through God’s eyes. It didn’t matter if they were fully functional or disabled. She did what she could for whom-ever she could. When we have a retreat to a place such as SABAH we get an opportunity to do the same. We come to understand that people are just that, people.

OUR DAY AT MERCY HOSPITAL by Rachel Hore, MMA Sophomore

Our sophomore religion class went on a retreat to Mercy Hospital on March 2, 2007. At first, we weren’t thrilled at the idea of spending an entire day in a hospital. But, by the end of the day we were amazed at the hospitality we received from the employees, and the memorable experience we shared with our class. During the course of the day, we were privileged with seeing various aspects of the hospi-tal that would have been off limits to others. Since we are a part of the loving Mercy Community, they trusted us to conduct ourselves as women of Mercy. Upon our arrival, we were presented with surprising facts about the Sisters of Mercy, Catherine McAuley, and the current status of Mercy Hospital. We came to find that the Sisters of Mercy are dedicated to helping the poor no matter how dire the cost may have been. They spend $23 million each year on medical care and donations but make a mere 3 million dollars. This shows how Catherine McAuley’s vision lives on today through the caring, compassionate work of the staff of Mercy Hospital. Our day was busy and consisted of a well-guided tour. We even saw a human brain and lung!! A popular favorite was the maternity wing. Kaitlin Krug said, “Wow! The babies made my day better and brought new meaning to my life! I also loved how tender and kind the staff acted toward the infants.” At the end of the day, we were all happy that we had the chance to experience and enjoy this opportunity. It even inspired some of us to think about pursuing a medical career in the near future. This was a great experience and we think that future classes should have the choice to attend such an educational retreat.

A Note of Thanks

Dear Sister Peggy and Paulette, I am currently serving as Chair-man of the Board and Hamburg rink captain for SABAH, a therapeutic ice skating program for individuals with disabilities. We held our annual ice skating show on Sunday, March 25.2007 at the HSBC Arena. Our program serves over 600 mentally and physically challenged skaters assisted by nearly 400 community volunteers. This year, at the Hamburg rink, a group of students from Mt. Mercy Academy volunteered to work with some of our most challenging skat-ers every Saturday morning. I just want you to know what a pleasure it was to have the girls participate in SABAH. They were there on time ready to help each week with smiles on their faces and great attitudes! I know how hard it is for teenagers to get up on Saturday morning, especially to volunteer. SABAH could not exist without the love and dedication of volunteers like these. Thank you for sharing your students with us. Mary Clare Smith

During Lent this year, Mount Mercy students were very involved in a school-wide effort to pray the Stations of the Cross. Students from Miss Cheryl Kisiel’s religion class wrote a version of the customary stations from a view point of women in the Bible. Each station includes a narrative, a prayer and a specially written verse of the traditional song “Were You There”. Additionally, the artistic talents of students contributed in two different ways. One class painted a set of stations, while another group used a medium of digital photog-raphy to stage and create a set of stations. The work is displayed in three locations in the school at this time. For the morning prayer during the last three weeks in March, one station is read over the PA system by students and a verse is sung. It is a powerful and beautiful way to pray the remembrance of our Lord’s Passion.

YOUR HELP IS NEEDED!!!

An education tax credit bill has been introduced in Albany, but the legislative leadership needs to hear from New Yorkers before they will allow it to become law. PLEASE CONTACT THE SENATE AND ASSEMBLY LEADERS AND EXPRESS YOUR SUPPORT FOR THIS IMPORTANT LEGISLATION. Senate: Hon. Joseph L. Bruno, Majority Leader NYS Senate Room 909 – Legislative Office Building Albany, NY 12247 Phone – 518-455-3191 (Albany) or 212-298-5508 (Manhattan) E-mail - [email protected]

Assembly: Hon. Sheldon Silver, Speaker NYS Assembly Room 932 – Legislative Office Building Albany, NY 12248 Phone: 518-455-3791 (Albany) or 212-312-1240 (Manhattan)

If you call, please ask for a Legislative Aide and tell that person that you want Senator Maltese and Assemblyman Hikind’s Educational Tax Incentives Act to be voted on by the full Senate and Assembly. The bill numbers are S. 3627 and A. 6432. Let these officials know that this legislation would benefit students in public as well as nonpublic schools, that it would help taxpayers, and that there is money in the Governor’s proposed budget to pay for this. If you mail or fax a letter or send a e-mail, please convey this same message. THANK YOU!

POST PROM PARENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

The next meeting for post prom will be on Thursday, April 26th in the cafete-ria at 7:00 PM. We are still in need of Freshman, Sophomore and Junior par-ents to work the night of the event, May 11th, which goes from 11:00 pm till 4:00 am. We are especially in need of parents to help in the kitchen, moni-tor security at the door, and help out in the coffee house. Even if you can only give a couple of hours to help, it would be appreciated. Please contact Kelly Hallinan at 825-1920 if you have any questions or to volunteer.

COMMITTEE SEEKS POST PROM DONATIONS

Each year after the Senior Prom the parents’ guild sponsors a Post Prom Party at the school. Each year parents in the Senior Class help support this effort by collecting donations for the raffle prizes given out at the end of the evening. Just to give you an idea of some of last years prizes there were target gift cards, block buster gift sets, movie passes, gas cards, oil change gift certificates or some parents just sent in cash to use to purchase the bigger prizes. We also had parents who went in together to purchase some of the larger prizes we give out such as small TV/DVD players, IPOD, concert tickets. In late April and early May some of your fellow Senior Parents will be contacting you about sup-porting this event for our daughters. We hope you will help in what ever way you can. Donations can be left at the school office marked to the attention of post prom. Any Senior parents with questions on how they can help can contact Kelly Hallinan at 825-1920 or via e-mail at [email protected]

In addition, you can vote for your favorite cake just by dropping a coin (US coinage) into the box or jar by their favorite cake. We will just count the number of coins, not the face value. You can bring your cakes to the MMA library on Monday, April 16, or by 9AM on the 17th The cake with the most votes (coins) will be crownedKing and/or Queen of Cakes!

Prom Safety Tips

Think back to your own proms. While much more expensive and self-indulgent than yours were, the hopes, disappoint-ments, joys and dangers associated with proms have re-mained essentially the same. The following tips may ease your prom anxieties, while helping to keep your kids as safe as possible:

The Talk -- Tell your children that you want them to have a won-derful, memorable prom. Keep that wish as a central focus. They need to give you their complete itinerary for the evening, including whom they will be with, where they'll be going after the prom and the phone numbers where you can contact them. "We'll just be driv-ing around" is not an acceptable response. Come to a fair decision on a curfew, based upon your children's past level of responsibility in this area. Express your concerns about their health and safety and explain to them why prom night makes it more difficult to make safe and smart decisions. Don't be vague -- discuss drinking, drug-ging, driving under the influence, and sex. Ask them how they plan to keep safe and avoid actions they will regret. Reinforce your belief in their character and in their ability to act responsibly. The Ride -- If they're not driving themselves, you must know who'll be driving them. Regardless of how many times you have talked about the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, emphasize that these dangers are particularly high on prom night. Your children cannot drink or take drugs and drive. They also must be driven by someone who has not drunk alcohol or taken drugs. You need their promise on these rules. These rules are non-n e g o t i a b l e . The Connection -- If your children are not returning home right after the prom, you need to be able to contact them at all times until they return home. You also need to be reachable at all times as well. There can be no doubt where your kids will be and with whom throughout the evening and morning. If they're going to other kids' houses after the prom, check ahead of time with these children's parents. You also have a right and a responsibility to ask if these parents are going to allow drinking in their homes. Many parents believe that as long as they "take keys" in a situation like this that underage drinking is permissible in their houses. You must answer the question, "Do I want my kids at after-prom parties where par-ents aren't present?" Post-prom, parent-child check-in calls make sense. Establish a couple of mandatory call-in times with your kids. You might consider giving cell phones to your kids for the evening, the reby es tab l i sh i ng a guaran teed connec t i on . The Offer -- Give your children the unconditional option of calling you at any time for help or advice. That includes picking them up at any time of day or night, with a promise not to shame or humiliate them in front of others. Assure them that you always welcome being part of their making smart and safe decisions. This unconditional offer of help and advice should be an outstanding offer throughout their lives.
