Primary 1Mental Maths
Mental Maths in P1• Mid Calder follows the SEAL approach to
mental maths throughout the school.• Teaching focusses on different aspects of
number:
• Number word sequences within 20 and beyond;
• Numerals to 20 and beyond;• Number structure within 20;• Counting (addition and subtraction)
strategies within 20 and beyond; and• Expressions and equations.
Number Word Sequences• Counting forwards and
backwards within 20 and beyond.
• Number before/after and one more than/one less than.
Numerals• Recognition and identification of
numerals within 20 and beyond.• Ordering and sequencing.• Missing numeral.
Number Structure• Develops number sense and
conceptual understanding of number.
• E.g. the threeness of 3: Boom! Boom! Boom!
Number Structure• Within 5, 10 and 20;• Regular and irregular patterns;• Partitioning number;• Secure number structure
supports addition and subtraction.
Counting Strategies• Addition and subtraction:
• Counting one perceived collection;• Counting two perceived collections;• Counting two collections where one is
screened; and• Counting two collections where both are
screened.• Grouping and sharing (early multiplication
and division).
Expressions and Equations• Describing the relationship
between numbers and numerals.
• Recognising, discussing, duplicating and creating simple numeric sequences.
• Recording calculations.
Stages of Early Arithmetical Development
• Emergent Learner• Perceptual Learner• Figurative Learner• Counting On Learner• Facile Learner
Number Talks• 5-15 minute conversations
based around pupils explaining their solutions to simple computation problems.
• Regular and irregular dot patterns, 5 frames, 10 frames, rekenreks.
• Aim to develop more accurate, efficient and flexible strategies.
Supporting Your Child at Home
• Discussing numbers all around us.• Lots of counting and number word
sequences.• Numeral flashcards for identification,
recognition and ordering.• Dice and domino games.• Opportunities to apply mental maths to
routine problems.• ICT games.• Asking child to explaining thinking and
strategies.
