Dear Hyde Park Families, It’s hard to believe we are already through the first quarter of the school year. We are gearing up for the end of 2015, and a great holiday season. Our performing arts department will have many special concerts during December. Please mark your calendar and be sure to attend, as these are extraordinary opportunities to see our students shine. These concerts are quite a festive way to kick off the holiday season! Please remember that the weather is getting colder, and students should be dressed appropriately. Many children are dropped off and picked up, so they do not bother with warm clothes. However, because we have outdoor hallways, we want to make sure our students stay warm. COUNSELOR’S CORNER

The Hyde Park counseling department would like to thank everyone for a successful start to the 2015-

2016 school year. We have been very busy adjusting schedules, but we are looking forward to an exciting year

with many enriching counseling activities.

As a part of our Bullying Prevention Program, our counseling department is supporting the Josh Stevens Foundation and spreading the message of kindness throughout the campus. This year the theme is,

“Be Pawsitive.” We encourage our students to show kindness in and out of the classrooms, and if a student is

“caught being kind,” they can receive either a “Be Kind” shirt or bracelet. Be Kind Shirts are also available to

purchase in the front office for $10. We want our students to know that their kind actions do not go

unnoticed. Every Friday, teachers, students, and parents are encouraged wear their “Be Kind” shirts to spread

the message of being kind and to show support for our school. We will also have bully reporting on our school

website. Students will be able to anonymously access a form on our website and the information provided will go

directly to the deans’ office.

The counseling department will also have numerous student recognition programs this year. Students will

be recognized each quarter for receiving straight O’s and A’s and B’s on their quarterly report cards. They will

be rewarded during their lunch, so make sure they bring their report card to the lunchroom. The counseling

department offers Tuesday Treats, on the final Tuesday of each month, where students will be rewarded by

teachers and staff for their hard work, kindness, or just for being overall good students. The counselors will

also host a straight A field trip this year that will take place during the 4th quarter for students who receive

all A’s on their quarterly reports cards.

Finally, the counselors will be in classrooms throughout the year conducting lessons on careers, bullying,

transitioning to high school, magnet schools, organization, academic plans, study skills, and many other topics

pertinent to your child’s successful year at Hyde Park MS. As the counselors conduct these classroom lessons,

we have students complete surveys regarding topics covered, and will also determine which students would

benefit from small counseling groups such as divorce, grief, anxiety, or peer mediation. If you would not like

your child to take these surveys or participate in a counseling group, please contact your child’s counselor.

If you have any questions for the counselors, please feel free to contact them.
