“Owasso” is a strange name for a town, isn’t it? It is a Native American word

that means “End of the Journey” or “End of the Trail.” Some say the town

was given its name because it was the very end of the infamous Trail of

Tears. Others say it was named Owasso because it was the terminus of the

railroad line. One of life’s great truths is that where one journey ends

another always begins. As poet Robert Frost pointed out, “way leads on to

way.” We invite you to begin the New Year at Owasso’s First United Method-

ist Church. Rev. Chuck Horton will preach on how God’s Word shows us how

to survive and thrive when we reach our own “Owasso Moments” in life.

A Reflection on the Word "Christmas" Much has been said about the word "Christmas." Stores and

municipalities are dropping the word and substituting "Happy Holidays"

instead. This has caused a number of Christians to express dismay,

calling for boycotts, writing letters to the editor and more. They say,

"Christ is being removed from Christmas!"

The word "Christmas" actually comes from two words: Christ and Mass.

"Mass" –meaning substance--is the word used in Roman Catholic and

some Protestant Churches for Holy Communion. As we receive Holy

Communion, we handle and taste the very substance of God’s great

gift to us.

Certainly, let us not remove the "Christ" from Christmas, but with equal

conviction, let us also not remove the "Mass" from Christmas either. Each

Christmas Eve, Christians may share in services of Holy Communion to

celebrate the God who chose to send his very substance into the world

through his Son born in Bethlehem.

On Sunday, December 23, at 1:30 p.m. at the Tea Room at Baptist

Village, Rev. Leroy Foreman has arranged for us to share Holy

Communion with the United Methodist who reside there and with any

others who want to share with us. Linda Cooper will provide music and

lead in song.

On Christmas Eve there will be five worship services with Holy

Communion at our church throughout the afternoon and evening. Let

us receive Holy Communion with gratitude and joy as we celebrate

God’s coming in Christ to save us. Let the sacrament of Communion be

at the center of our Christmas - Christ-mass – holiday this year.

Continue to pray for the following

Concerns…Joys…Answered Prayers

(week of 12/17/12)

Thanks to everyone who participated in getting our Exodus House apartment up and

running with your new and gently used donations and monetary donations. David

Robinson and several men helped paint the apartment. Harvey and Judy Lewis helped with sanding and

painting the cabinet doors. Participating in welcoming our new resident with lunch at Rib Crib were John

Miller and Glenda Webster with her daughter Fay. Participating in the Exodus House Christmas party with

gifts for our resident was Nancy Adkisson. Our resident Melanie Brown will be celebrating a birthday in

March, and I hope to have some volunteers to join us to celebrate. We are going to retire the Exodus

House box and bulletin board poster for a while. Melanie should graduate in 6-12 months, and she will

be taking the furnishings from the apartment with her to her new home. When that time approaches, the

box and list will return. In the meantime, we will be accepting donations of money to the church account

and furnishing donations. Please talk to Karolann Whetsell or David Robinson if you have any questions.

I am so blessed to a part of this generous congregation,

Karolann Whetsell

Thank you to our dear church family. Please accept our sincere appreciation for all of your love and support at the time of our great loss of our beloved son, and brother Timothy Sebastian. Thank you for the prayers, the cards, calls, and the constant attention to Mama Ruth McMahan, which made it possible for all our siblings to attend the Florida funeral. Love in Christ, Juanita Ramsey & Ruth McMahan family

Thank You

Thank You

Several church members

requested that our church keep the

communities affected by so much

violence over the last week in prayer.

Jayne Broughton asked for continued prayers for

her daughter, Jennifer in her battle with addic-

tion. She has relapsed and the family hasn’t heard

from her in a week.

Jessica Crapse asked for continuing prayers of

strength and healing for herself and her chil-

dren. She requests prayers of physical healing for

her sister-in-law, Kara Crapse who was recently in a

car wreck. She requests prayers for her brother,

Glenn Good, who is a marine and in need of

emotional healing. Jessica also requests prayers

for a co-worker, Delores Forman and her family as

her 3 month old grandson, Kyler is in need of a liver

transplant.

Sandy Freshour asks for continued prayer for her-

self as she is still searching for a new job.

Pastor Chuck Horton requests continued prayers of

healing for his granddaughter, Sadie Jane

Ware. He also requests prayers from the congre-

gation surrounding our Christmas Eve services.

Marilynn Wedemeyer requested prayers for her

husband, Lynn and his family as his 94 year old

mother who lives in Iowa is not doing well and pre-

paring to go to heaven.

Each week, our church family commits to pray for

certain members of our church staff. This week we

will all be praying for our music staff - Linda

Cooper, Andy Henson, and Bob Humble.

Remembering that we are people of faith and that we should pray for one another and our needs, we should keep in mind the words of the Apostle Paul, who said to the church at Thessalonica - “Pray Without Ceasing.”

P A G E 3 Taud’s “Loose Ends” - Associate Pastor’s Column It’s always good to stop once in a while and take a look back at what’s been going on - and to

look forward a little bit as well. As 2012 draws to a close and we prepare to welcome in 2013, I

wanted to take this last opportunity of the year to do just that. Hopefully I’ll be able to tie up some

“Loose Ends” in the process.

I have always believed that we have very little control over much of what happens around us or to

us in our lives. The only real control that any of us have is in how we respond as things happen. About

a month or so ago I was noticing that I was suffering from a condition that some have labeled as

“Facebook Fatigue.” It involves several different forms of social media and online communication. I

was becoming more and more aware that it was taking up a good portion of my day to day activity

and I was becoming very frustrated with the divisive and toxic language that is a part of that world.

So I decided to take a self-imposed Facebook hiatus during the season of Advent. Almost overnight

it worked. I felt better and I had more energy. It was kind of like being on a diet and living a

healthier lifestyle… but not as much work. And I did find a certain amount of irony in the fact that I

wanted to go out and make that an update on my Facebook timeline. In all seriousness and kidding

aside, the point is, that if we want things to be different in our lives tomorrow… we need to make

changes today. I decided to stop with the inward whining and complaining and to simply do some-

thing different. It has made all the difference.

After taking some time this past fall to teach a class about faith and beliefs of the church on Wednes-

day nights, I am looking forward to teaching another round of Must See Movies With Taud (MSMWT)

when RENEW activities resume for us in February. I haven’t settled in yet on all of the movies that

we’ll be watching, but I’ve made a few choices so far. They are: “MoneyBall,” “The Help,” and “We

Bought a Zoo.” If you’ve got a suggestion or two please let me know:

[email protected] Teaching MSMWT has to be one of my favorite things I get to do. If

you haven’t attended the class yet – I’d invite you to come and check it out on Wednesday nights

beginning in February in the movie theatre UMC-12 upstairs. It’s a lot of fun and it will help you think

about your faith a little differently. I’ll provide the popcorn.

In early January, I will continue the coursework for my doctorate program. This semester marks the

halfway point of my in-class work. It’s still a little overwhelming to me; but I am beginning to get my

head wrapped around it all. I can now see the light at the end of the tunnel. It’s a great deal of

reading, writing, and preparation for the two week class sessions, but I continue to pray and hope

that it’s all worth it in the end. Once again, I want to thank this church for your support and your

encouragement as I pursue this goal. My family and I are certain that we couldn’t get through it if

weren’t for you all.

What a year 2012 has been. If those Mayans were wrong, and we all live till the 22nd, I look forward to

celebrating another Christmas and New Years with you all. My hope is that we have all experienced

the Joy and the Love and the Hope of the Advent season with fresh understandings about who Jesus

is in our lives. Thank you all for your willingness to step out boldly in faith. May we all continue in that

boldness and in the confidence of being God’s children in 2013.

Apportionments are how United Methodists fund our missions and ministries at the conference and world-wide levels. Apportionments pay most of the salaries and expenses for missionaries and provide for our Volunteers in Missions, and for ministries in Oklahoma such as our addiction ministries, Circle of Care, campus ministries, prison ministries, camps, Project Transformation, and ministerial support items that help pay the church’s½ cost of health benefits/health insurance, minister’s moving fund, our share of the district superintendent’s salary and expenses, and other funds. By participating in apportionments, our church helps provide pastoral ministry in many small communities and churches across Oklahoma. So far this year, we have paid 70% of our apportionments for the year. We still need to receive $36,296 so we can pay this in full. This year, our church is asking its members to “adopt” an apportionment and pay the full or partial amount of one of the apportionment items. There is a display in the church with some special “Adopt an Apportionment” envelopes and a chart of how much we need to receive for each of these ministries and funds. As funds come in, we will update the chart so you can watch our progress.

Members, Please Be Ready to Welcome Others on Christmas Eve!

Did you know that Christmas Eve worship services across the country tend to draw many guests

who are “trying out” the church? In fact, in many churches, there are more guests on Christmas

Eve than for any other service during the whole year. We would ask all our members to please

keep this in mind when you come to worship on Christmas Eve. Look around and give a warm

welcome to anyone you do not recognize. When you meet guests, offer to take them on a tour of

the building after the service. As you show them around, get to know them, and invite them to

come back and make our church their home. John Miller will have someone manning the

“Information Station” next to the Sunshine Desk before and after the services and there will be

items for guests there. If you a part of the “Greeter Team” on any Sunday morning of the month,

please arrive at the Christmas Eve Service of your choice at least fifteen minutes early and wear

your “Greeter” Name Badge. This will allow guests to ask you if they have any questions. Thank you

members, for helping us have a great Christmas Eve at our church.

Worship Services Get Named!

Our church has four different worship services each Sunday morning. As of the first of the New Year

each service will have its very own name and logo and each service will have a theme verse from

the Bible. Let us introduce the names and logos to you. . .

For Elementary Age Students, Adults and Professionals Anti-Bullying Workshop

On Sunday, January 13, 2013, the First United Methodist Church in Owasso is sponsoring an “Empower our Kids: Anti-Bullying Workshop” for children ages Kindergarten-Fifth Grade, parents, educators, and any other persons who would like to learn more about empowering kids against bullying. We are welcoming puppeteer, Jacqueline Gallegos of the Parent Child Center of Tulsa, and their puppets, “Kids on the Block”. The puppeteers are educators who teach children how to protect themselves in difficult situations. Their puppet “kids” provide a friendly environment that allows children to share their feelings and fears and get answers to their questions. Also, we will have a parent educator from the Parent Child Center of Tulsa available for a workshop with adults following the puppet performance. Lunch will also be provided for FUMC Families. We are asking for a $5 donation to cover the cost of food and to help make a love offering to the groups involved in this event. We do not wish this cost to be a burden and anyone can contact the church for financial assistance. We want any person who would like to attend to please come. Free childcare for children 5 and under will be provided with reservation by Jan 9, 2013 so that proper amount of staff are scheduled.

Workshop Schedule:

12:30 - 1:15 Lunch in Rooms 121/123 (RSVP please for meal count)

1:15- 1:30 Childcare begins receiving children

1:30- 2:15 “Kids on the Block” puppet presentation in the Chapel (all attendees)

2:15- 2:30 Break time and transition time for children upstairs

2:30- 3:30 Parent/Educator/Adult breakout session in the Chapel

2:30- 3:30 Kids activities and snack provided by youth volunteers in the Youth

Lodge and God’s Gym

For further information about empowering our kids against bullying, please visit the Parent Child

Center of Tulsa website, www.preventbullyingtulsa.org. There are alarming statistics in regards to

bullying and the attempted and completed suicides in the elementary age group. My prayer is that

through this workshop, we will help to empower kids and adults with the right tools to successfully

navigate those situations when they are faced with them. Your support makes this event possible.
