We need to move from “pastoral care” to “congregational care”. The first step for this is to implement a new ministry which we are calling “Pray 4 All”. The concept is simple. We are seeking 30-40 people who will pray for 10-12 families from our church on a regular and consistent basis. Those who agree to be on the “Pray 4 All” Prayer Team will be given a list of families to pray for. If you feel that other follow up is needed you can contact the church office. We announced the Pray 4 All Prayer Team last Sunday and so far we have had 6 people respond to this opportunity to pray and serve. We are still in need of 25-35 people to take part in this ministry. A Note From Our Pastor

I have served 4 churches as a United Methodist minister in Oklahoma. My first church was in

Commerce and there were about 40 families who were a part of that church. My second church was Grace

UMC in Altus and there were about 80 families who were a part of that church. My third church was Christ

UMC in Enid and there were about 150 families who were a part of that church. In 1998, I was appointed to

serve here in Owasso. When I came here there were about 200 families who were a part of that church. Since

that time our church has grown significantly and we have about 400 families who are involved in the church

regularly and another 100 families who are inactive members. We also have another 50 families who are

attending our church, but who have not yet joined.

My role as a pastor and a caregiver for those involved in these churches has varied with the size of the

church. I was able to provide “pastoral care” in the churches at Commerce and Altus. At Enid there was a

Covenant Care group who assisted the pastor in caring for the shut-ins. And here in Owasso we also have a

Covenant Care group who have assisted the pastors in providing care for our shut-ins. Our Covenant Care

group is wonderful and I don’t know what we would do without their loving care for our shut-ins.

It is also great to have an Associate Pastor who is gifted in caring for others. Taud has the role of “first

responder” which means when we are notified that someone is in the hospital that he is usually the first pastor

to visit. However, as dedicated as Taud and I are to provide “pastoral care” to those who are involved in our

church, we feel a certain level of anxiety because caring for 400-500 families is different from providing care

for 40-80 families. We simply can’t do all that we would like to do. What we have realized is that we need to

change the model for providing care in our congregation. We need to move from “pastoral care” to

“congregational care”. The first step for this is to implement a new ministry which we are calling “Pray 4

All”. The concept is simple. We are seeking 30-40 people who will pray for 10-12 families from our church

on a regular and consistent basis. Those who agree to be on the “Pray 4 All” Prayer Team will be given a list

of families to pray for. When one of those families has a prayer request on our prayer chain, you are asked to

pray intently for that request and follow up with an email or phone call. If you feel that other follow up is

needed you can contact the church office.

We announced the Pray 4 All Prayer Team last Sunday and so far we have had 6 people respond to this

opportunity to pray and serve. We are still in need of 25-35 people to take part in this ministry. We will have

an organizational meeting as soon as we have enough commitments to get started. I am truly excited about this

new Prayer Ministry! I think it is a much needed step so that our church can provide a caring presence for all

of our church members.

Yours in Christ,

Chris

Thank You!

We would like to express our sincere thanks to the congregation and to Staff Parish Relations

Committee for the kind Love Offering we received. We are very glad to work for you and through

the ministries of First United Methodist Church of Owasso—we are thankful to you for remembering

us during the Christmas Season.

Taud’s “Loose Ends”

Associate Pastor’s Column I hope, pray, and trust that everyone is beginning to settle into the routine of 2011. The start of a New Year

is always a great time to look ahead and refocus one’s energy and vision for the future. Every January for the last 10

years, I have attended the Oklahoma Annual Conference’s gathering of the Orders meeting in Oklahoma City.

Basically it’s a time that our Bishop sets aside with as many of the clergy in the conference that can attend. We

worship together, we take part in a Wesleyan covenant service, and the Bishop shares sort of a “state of the

denomination and conference” address. Last week, Bishop Hayes shared from the council of Bishop’s “Call to

Action” report. This report is going to be a big topic at our next General Conference of the church in 2012.

The report has some key recommendations that the authors feel must be address if the church is going to not

only survive, but begin to grow in the coming decade. Most of the recommendations fall right in line with the

strategic plan that the Oklahoma Conference adopted in 2009. So as Bishop Hayes was going through the list, I was

reflecting on this congregations approach to the plan and how we have tackled it head on. The bottom line for me

once again was that while our work is not yet finished, we are on the right track and working in the right direction.

Bishop Hayes, in his message, reminded all of us that we are Trustees of the Future. He quoted the Apostle Paul in 1

Corinthians chapter 3 when Paul says, “I planted, Apollos watered, but it is God who provides and is responsible for

the growth.” It’s so exciting to know that we are co-laborers with God and are working to build the Kingdom in a

positive and meaningful way.

We are gearing up for the start of another really great confirmation class. We have already begun the praying

and planning phase as we look ahead. I’d ask everyone to join us in praying for our confirmands (yes that is a real

word), their families, and their friends-in-faith. The rubber meets the road and we begin on Sunday February 6th. As

a church, one of the greatest privileges we have is helping to raise up disciples of Jesus and nurturing people along

their faith journeys. Confirmation is a time when these youth, caught between their lives as children and becoming

adults, get to explore and firm up their faith and make the commitment to follow Christ with their lives. It’s an honor

to be a part of this process. Our Youth Directors, Carol Cooper and Mike Robinson work so hard to make sure that

it’s a great experience. When you see them, be sure to let them know what a tremendous job they do.

Finally, the worship experience that is 11:11 on Sunday mornings continues to grow and become stronger.

Our new fulltime Worship Leader, Andy Henson has been working with both praise teams for nearly a month now

and they are beginning to gel as groups. God’s presence and Spirit can be sensed as they prepare for and rehearse

different music and indeed as we gather together and worship as a church family. We are looking for a few more

people to help in various ways to make the worship experience more full and rich. Check out the bulletin inserts for

more information and ways to get plugged in. I think our church offers the opportunity to worship passionately no

matter what your individual tastes may be. I’d invite you in this coming year to explore new ways of sharing your

gifts and talents in God’s service. The best message any of us will ever preach, is the life that we live.

YELLOW BALLOON PRESCHOOL ENROLLMENT

2011-12 and 2012-13 SCHOOL YEARS

Even though it's only January, it's already time to think about enrollment for the next 2 school years. If your child's name is already on

our list for 2011-12 please call as soon as possible to schedule a parent information meeting and a classroom visit with your child. If your child's

name is not yet on our list, there may be a chance there will be an opening.

In determining your child's readiness for our preschool program, please see if he/she can willingly stop his own activity, put it away and

join a teacher-directed activity, and that he/she can sit relatively quietly in a group of 18 children for 10-20 minutes. This is usually

developmentally too much to expect from young 3 year olds and has no correlation with their intelligence.

Classes are in the morning from 9 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.

Class days and tuition are:

Enrollment & Supply fees: $75

M/W/F Class $900 per year or $100/mo. tuition

T/Th Class $765 per year or $85/mo. tuition

This is a yearly tuition broken into 9 equal monthly payments.

* A 10% discount is available for the second child enrolled at the same time from the same family.

Children must be at least 3 years old to attend, fully toilet trained and ready for an organized group experience. Children waiting to

begin kindergarten at age 6, and those turning 5 in the fall should enroll in the M/W/F class. Three year olds are to enroll in the T/Th class. Four

year olds may enroll in either class. If you are interested in the 2012-13 school year, please call to put your child's name on that waiting list.

Because of our long waiting list and the overwhelming amount of applications we receive, the Preschool Board has an enrollment policy and

enrollment committee. While several criteria are considered for enrollment, there is no single factor to guarantee enrollment.

Please call Diane Loyd at preschool at 272-1835 if you have any questions. Thank You!

An introduction of sorts I just wanted to express my thanks to the congregation for welcoming me in. Ever since I arrived, there have been numerous people who have offered to help with anything I needed in my time of transition. So thank you for welcoming me! I am excited be on this great church staff, serving as your Director of Contemporary Worship and Outreach. My two greatest passions are worship and missions (and I love this church) so I can’t think of a better place for me to be. Put simply, I have a passion for people and look forward to working with all of you as we reach others for Christ our King. One of my many tasks is putting together this newsletter monthly so if you would like to have something placed in here, send an email to [email protected] and I’ll make sure it gets in. I look forward to meeting many more of you and you’ll see me around on Sunday mornings (I’m the guy who’s not wearing any shoes in worship) and at many church functions. Peace and blessings! Safe Sanctuaries The First United Methodist Church of Owasso adopted a Safety Policy and follows Safety Procedures because we want to

assure that ALL OF US are safe while in our building, on our property, or on an event sponsored by our church.

**We need your help to make this possible**

**New Forms Available**

Copies of our revised Safety Policy, Servant Application and the Conference Safe Sanctuaries Volunteer Application are

available on the table under the Information Bulletin Board or upstairs at the Information Desk.

ALL peoples who serve with the nursery, children, youth or vulnerable adults MUST fill out these applications. You can

drop your completed form off in the office, place it in the basket under the Information Bulletin Board, or you can give them

to Corrina Robinson or Carol Cooper. We will be mailing in these forms weekly to the Conference Office.

Your prompt attention to these forms is GREATLY appreciated and crucial for our church and her ministries.

Trailblazers Activities for February

Thursday, February 10th - Please plan to join us for our “Annual Sweetheart Luncheon”.

Our Special Guests will be the Sweethearts of our Covenant Care Ministry. Bring your favorite main

dish or dessert to the kitchen by 11:15am. Pastor Chris will bless the food and we will eat at 11:30am.

Following our lunch, we will enjoy a Valentine Music Special Presentation by our own very and very

talented Jean Grady and Linda Cooper.

February 25th, Friday evening performance of the musical comedy, “Once Upon A Mattress” at the

TCC VanTrease PAC. You will be carried on a wave of wonderful songs, by tunes hilarious and

raucous, romantic and melodic, this rollicking spin of the family classic royal courtship and

consequences provides for some side splitting shenanigans. Chances are you will never look at fairy

tales quite the same way again. We will be leaving the church at 6:30pm.

Confirmation Orientation Meeting for Parents Parents of 6th Graders or older youth if you missed the Confirmation Orientation Meeting

for Parents we have scheduled another meeting on Sunday, January 30 at 4:00 pm in the Room

100. If you have any questions please talk to Chris Tiger, Taud Boatman, Carol Cooper or Mike

Robinson.

“Hurting Hearts… Healing Hearts” *Meeting on February 3rd*

Everyone has hurts at some point in their life. These can be caused by the death of someone close i.e.: a spouse, a

family member, a friend, etc. We can experience hurts through a divorce, a job loss, a goal not being fulfilled, a move, the

death of a pet, a loss of a friendship, health concerns, or the loss of independence due to an illness. If you have hurts in your

heart, this new group can help you as you begin to heal. We will remind ourselves that we do not need to feel alone or

isolated in our hurting. We will support and care for one another.

We will meet at the church in the lodge area upstairs on the first Thursday of every month at 7:00 p.m. Meetings will

last approximately an hour and a half. Anyone that is hurting is welcome to attend.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Bobbie Sue Doye at 272-5435 or Taud Boatman at 272-

5731. If your heart is hurting, we hope to see you there. And remember – you are not alone!

Compass Coach Training

Wednesday, Feb 3rd 6:30-8:00 pm

The Compass Coach Ministries has had additional children added to the program and therefore,

we are in need of more Coaches to help during the Sunday Morning & Wednesday Evening Activities.

If you are feeling a calling to serve in this ministry but are not sure if this is for you, please come to

the training to learn more about the program and see how you can impact not only a child’s life, but

their entire family by serving as a Coach to a child in need.

You Know Someone... …Who is hurting - They may have experienced physical or emotional abuse at the hands of another, they

have had hurtful relationships, divorce, separation, loss of a loved one, etc.

…Who has hang-ups - If a hurt isn't healed, it can develop into a hang-up like...anger issues, low self-

esteem, co-dependency, selfishness, or pride and/or arrogance, etc.

…Who has habits - If a hang-up is ignored long enough, it can develop into a habit, these can include;

Gambling addiction, sex addiction (pornography), overeating, chemical dependencies like alcoholism, drug abuse,

smoking, and there are quite a few others.

God has the answers to these and other issues that we face every day. He wrote them out for us in the Bi-

ble; and on Sunday nights we gather in the Chapel to learn about God's cure for the issues of life. Celebrate Re-

covery is that ministry. At 6:00 we gather and have dinner, at 7:00 the large group meeting starts where we praise

the Lord and hear about how God has changed a life through hearing testimonies or teachings about God's healing

process. Please tell that “someone” you know about this ministry and invite them to meet you there next Sunday.

It's always easier to go to a meeting like this if you know someone there. God Bless each of you.

GROUPS STILL NEEDED TO SPONSOR SHALOM MEALS Wednesday Night activities have resumed and a big part of our Wednesday Night Activities is the Shalom

Meal which is sponsored by various Sunday School Classes or groups throughout the church. This spring we will

have Shalom Meals from Jan 12th through March 2nd and then will resume back up after Easter, April 27th – May

4th. During Lent we will have Room 127 & 129 open for seating if you want to bring your own dinner to eat and

fellowship with others before the Children’s Classes start at 6:00pm and/or the Lent Services start at 6:30pm.

We are still looking for groups to sign up to sponsor a Shalom Meal for the following dates: February 2nd,

February 16th, February 23rd, and April 27th. Please prayerfully consider when your group will be available to

sponsor the Shalom Meal and contact Corrina Robinson at the church office to reserve your preferred date and al-

so let us know what type of meal you will be serving. Thanks to those who have already sponsored the meals this

year and to all of the groups who have sponsored this meal in the past. It is a wonderful time to get together with

your group and show others in our church your servant heart.

Staff News We are pleased to announce that Karen McKibbin is our new Assistant Secretary. She will be helping in our church office on an “as needed” basis. She will also fill in for our Admin-istrative Secretary and Financial Secretary in their absence. Karen and her husband, Scott, are members of our church. They have 2 daughters Jami and Abby.
