Dear Parents/Carers

Another action packed edition of OuseNews!

As always, it has been a very busy half term. Year 11 students received their mock results and we have been very impressed with their focus; not only in the lead up to their mocks but their engagement with how they can improve even further this summer.

As you peruse this edition, you will see many examples of the school’s vision and ethos; student personal development and leadership continues to be an important part of our vibrant and informative PSHE/wellbeing programme, as well as the outstanding careers provision. The school is very excited, especially the 6th form, about the introduction of Unifrog, an online platform that will help deliver careers education.

Students, once again, can look forward to an extensive and challenging Enrichment programme next half-term. This programme continues to evolve and improve each year with all year groups being able to access an eclectic mix of activities and leadership opportunities.

We are busy preparing for next half term, both academically and holistically, to ensure that the good work of students and staff continues.

Have a wonderful half-term break.

The Music Department would like to thank all students who auditioned for this year's Musician of the Year competition. The first round of auditions was held in early January, and it was clear from this point that the standard was going to be incredibly high this year. The following students were selected to perform in the final, held on Tuesday 5th February at the Olney Campus.

We were very lucky to have a very competent musician in Paul Harris to adjudicate the competition. Paul studied the clarinet at the Royal Academy of Music, where he now teaches. He is in great demand as a teacher, composer, and has written over 600 books on music education. After listening to all students perform, Paul commented on the high standard of all performances, but in particular gave a ‘highly commended’ award to Timothy Ball (Cornet) who performed Dvorák’s ‘Rusalka’s Song to the Moon’ and Charlotte Bruce (Flute) who performed the technically challenging ‘Allegretto malincolico’ by Poulenc. Two runner up places were given to Gloria Chen (piano) who stunned the audience with the technically challenging ‘Prelude in G minor’ by Rachmaninov and Caleb Gray (piano) who also captured the audience with a mesmerizing arrangement of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ performed from memory. The overall winner of Ousedale Young Musician 2018-19 was awarded to Samra Gabriel (Violin) who gave a striking musical performance of ‘Ladies in Lavender’, by the composer Nigel Hess. The music department would like to thank all students involved in the competition, and all students in the Orchestra who also performed to help make the evening such a success. Ousedale Young Musician of the Year 2018-2019

On Wednesday, 6th February, Ousedale School hosted Milton Keynes Secondary Schools’ Young Musician of the Year 2018-2019, organised in conjunction with Milton Keynes Music Hub and the Rotary organisation. Fergal Mac Manus (13CC) represented Ousedale School performing the Classical Guitar with a delightful

performance of ‘Capricho árabe’ by Tárrega, ‘Cavatina’ by Myers and a ‘Tango’. Nine schools were represented from Milton Keynes and we were delighted that Fergal was awarded ‘runner up’ in the competition. To perform such a musical performance at an event like this requires an incredible amount of dedication, hard work and perseverance. Well done Fergal!

It has been another busy and eventful few months in the careers department. We have been looking

at lots of new and exciting ways we can further develop careers, training and higher education

provisions throughout the school.

New member of the Careers Team

We welcomed another new member to our careers team, Mrs Karen Conway, who is based at the Olney campus. She brings a wealth of experience in terms of employability and careers, having worked for various universities and colleges, as well as holding a Master’s Degree in Psychology.

MK Bus event

In January we welcomed the Milton Keynes College ‘Big Yellow Bus’ to campus. Thirty Year 11 students were welcomed on board at Newport Pagnell and 39 at Olney. Students had the chance to discuss post-16 options and find out more about the courses they offer. This was a very successful event, with lots of students making course applications.

Unifrog

The careers team are very excited to be involved in launching Unifrog across the School. Unifrog is an online platform that will be used to help deliver Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance, and PSHE. Students will be able to compare university courses, apprenticeships and FE courses, as well getting access to labour market information and advice on careers and subjects for all routes. Currently the system has been implemented with Year 12, and will be rolled out to other year groups during the course of the academic year. The system can be used both in school and at home. For further information please see https://www.unifrog.org/ Year 10 Work Experience

We are delighted to be running the year 10 work experience scheme again this year from 8th-12th July 2019. All year 10s attended a presentation about the scheme a few weeks ago and nearly 200 students have registered their interest. Work experience is an excellent opportunity for students to obtain an insight into the world of work; we look forward to receiving their completed application forms and the deadline to get them back to us is 29th April.

Year 12 Careers Fair

As part of this week’s ACE day activities, Year 12 will be attending a careers fair. The aim of the careers fair is to offer the students the chance to consider future career, training and work options, as well as raising their aspirations and expanding their employability skills. We are delighted to be welcoming so many highly-respected organisations from our local community including Haines Watts, Nifty Lift, Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO), John Lewis, Unilever, Thames Valley Police, Grant Thornton, The Bedford Estate, Pictons Solicitors and many more. Ousedale students participated in skiing and snowboarding enrichment before Christmas, learning new skills, developing confidence and pushing themselves out of their comfort zones. This was fantastic to see and all students who took part were a credit to the school during their time at Snozone. Skiing and snowboarding are some of the hardest extreme sports to learn and it takes dedication and a lot of hard work, alongside a lot of falling over, to master the skills needed to be a controlled and elegant skier or snowboarder. The pupils on lessons were resilient in mastering the skills required to move through the learning progression, becoming fantastic skiers and snowboarders towards the end of the group of lessons. We also had a group of skiers and snowboarders already slope confident who wanted to enjoy their sport trying new things and pushing themselves to the next level!

Holocaust Commemoration

Ousedale School, along with other schools across Milton Keynes, were invited to take part in the Holocaust Memorial Day Commemoration event on Wednesday, 30th January 2019 at the Council Chamber offices. Students from Ousedale took part in the annual memorial which is a time for everyone to pause to remember the millions of people who have been murdered or whose lives have been changed beyond recognition during the Holocaust Nazi persecution and, in subsequent genocides, in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur. Students wrote and read out reflections on two case studies from the Holocaust and the Bosnian war and the theme this year was torn from home; this is to encourage audiences to reflect on how the enforced

loss of a safe place to call ‘home’ is part of the trauma faced by anyone experiencing persecution and genocide. ‘Home’ usually means a place of safety, comfort and security. The evening focused on what happens when individuals, families and communities are driven out of, or wrenched from their homes, because of persecution or the threat of genocide, alongside the continuing difficulties survivors face as they try to find and build new homes when the genocide is over.

MK Youth SACRE

A group of students across Years 7-10 from Newport and Olney campus have participated in the MK Youth SACRE (Standing Advisory Council on Religious Education) first meeting this academic year - representing the voices of young people in matters of faith. The SACRE represents a group of local children and young people from schools across Milton Keynes who work together to share ideas and resources to help inspire RE teachers with new concepts that are relevant to their world.

The meeting, held at Denbigh school, has provided the opportunity for Ousedale students to take part in the development team and work together to provide a network to support the delivery of RE by sharing ideas. Students have engaged in debates and discussions with local religious leaders and reflected upon their interfaith community and demonstrated leadership in helping support changes in RE.

120 Year 9 students spent the day with Network Rail representatives putting ideas into practice by completing STEM based challenges.

The students were required to build a bridge spanning a set distance using very limited resources. The next challenge involved designing a working model of a level crossing.

The final challenge had them trying to calculate the best route for a new train route.

15 students were invited to attend the Network Rail

headquarters in Milton Keynes. The students

listened to a wide variety of experts in their field

talking about how they came to work for Network

Rail. Students also completed an electronics

challenge, which involved computer programming to

make LEDs light up.

A group of Engineering and Design Technology

students attended a morning at Abbey Precision. The

students were able to use the high tech engineering

equipment and see

the different

processes taking

place. Each

student created his

or her own chess

piece from a CNC

machine. Students

had a tour of the

facilities and spent time within all the different departments to find

out a little bit more about how an engineering company runs.

Newport Pagnell Girls into Design & Engineering (GEMS) Club created Xmas decorations using CAD 2D design and laser cutting them from acrylic. The decorations looked amazing and the girls took them home to hang on their tree in time for Christmas Celebrations!

Engineering students spent a day at BSI, the business standards company. Students experienced interactive activities with representatives from Medical Devices, Food, Product Testing and Cyber Security. They met with some of the company’s employees who informed them of specific job roles and the possible routes into the career – from apprenticeships and degree programmes to supervisors and managers.

At Olney we run a Design and Technology club open to all year groups, and now have a group of around 15 students regularly attending. Students will be making a wide range of things from USB sticks to hanging basket brackets. Last term they created tea light holders.

Very well done!

After School Club

On Wednesday, 6th February, Ousedale will be starting a Warhammer 40k and the Age of Sigmar after school club. School Alliance (Ousedale RPG Club) is part of a Games Workshop School programme that supports Warhammer clubs across the UK, Australia, Asia and very soon North America. At present the alliance incorporates over 1,200 groups across the globe and gives support to fellow hobbyists who wish to socialise, develop creative and gaming skills as well as gaining skills towards the Duke of Edinburgh award. What is Warhammer? It is a table top battle game which puts players in command of armies of valiant humans, noble elves, savage orcs or a variety of twisted and monstrous creatures. Players collect forces of miniature plastic models, all with different stats and abilities, and use them to play out clashes on a table top battlefield. Unlike a board game, where players’ moves are restricted to defined areas, Warhammer commanders freely manoeuvre their units, set distances using rulers and resolve shooting and hand-to-hand combat by rolling dice. Members of the club will be able to assemble and paint miniatures, then form teams which then can be placed in tournaments against other schools at Warhammer world in Nottingham or at their local Game store or Games Workshop locations within Milton Keynes. Students interested in participating can attend in H3 with Mrs Sanderson every Wednesday after school during term time from 3:15 pm to 4:15 pm. Thanks to the Games Workshop Alliance we are ready to work on a special beginners set, donated to the school. Mrs Sanderson | Teaching Assistant
