Welcome to Year 9 Welcome to Windsor Girls' School. Year 9 is an important year in your daughter's school life. Not only is she settling into the new environment and getting to know new staff and students but also she has the very important task of choosing her options for GCSE. Our key principles of Ready, Respect and Safe govern how we operate as a community and help ensure everyone has the best possible chances to Aspire, Advance and Achieve in their academic study and in their enrichment activities. This booklet is designed to help parents best support their daughters for the year ahead. We have included key dates for progress monitoring and the options process as well as guidelines on routines and processes for you to become aware of. Across the year we will be supporting students to achieve their best and Subject Teachers will be guiding them towards the most appropriate routes for Key Stage 4. We hold an Options Evening in February which will give students and parents the opportunity to meet Subject Teachers and gain an understanding of requirements for options subjects. This booklet gives you a brief overview of this process which will then be explained in further detail on the Options Evening. Enrichment and development opportunities extend the curriculum for all students. There are a range of experiences throughout our 'Personal Development Learning' programme. Your daughter has already participated in the first ’Recycle and Eco Week’ Community Week. There are numerous opportunities for your daughter to participate in enrichment activities outside of lessons. All subject areas offer new challenges for students to widen their experiences. Many involve students representing the school at events and in competitions. We want all of our students to be proud members of Windsor Girls’ School. We actively encourage participation in the opportunities that we offer. These include sports clubs such as the netball team and the rowing squad. Please see the extra curricular timetable for further details. There are many musical events to participate in and there will be school productions later in the year. We also have a very successful Girls’ Choir and Big Band. There are also numerous competitions to aspire to win, such as House Competitions, Magistrates Court Mock Trial, Bake Off and the Science Challenge at Reading University. We have a successful Student Leadership programme which recognises and fosters the leadership talents amongst our students. Opportunities for Student Leadership include Year Ambassadors, Sports Leaders, Anti-Bullying Ambassadors, House Captains, Language Leaders, School Council, Transition Leaders. and Emotional Champions Your daughter will also be enrolled on the PiXL Edge which is a framework for secondary schools and Sixth Form providers to develop and accredit students’ attitudes, attributes and skills which are essential for employability and life. Through a series of accredited tasks and activities (including target-setting and self-reflection) PiXL Edge enables students to systematically enhance their skills. The scheme focuses on five key attributes:

Leadership

Organisation

Resilience

Initiative

Communication Your daughter will have numerous opportunities to develop the five key attributes both during lessons and enrichment. Please encourage your daughter to get fully involved in the life of the school and to take advantage of all opportunities on offer to her.

The Year 9 Curriculum

All Year 9 students follow a broad and balanced curriculum comprising the following core subjects: English, Mathematics and Science. Alongside core subjects students will study Ebacc subjects - Modern Foreign Languages, Geography and History. Modern Foreign Languages - all students will study a carousel of before selecting which

language they wish to continue with during Year 9

In addition all students study: ICT, Ethics, Design Technology, Drama, Music, Art, Games, Relationships and Sex Education and Learning to Work. Learning to Work consists of one lesson per fortnight where students develop their work ready skills and investigate career progression routes. In Design Technology students follow a rotation pathway across Year 9. The rotation includes Food Technology, Textiles, Graphics and CAD-CAM. Students are banded as follows:

There are two bands, an upper band and a lower band Students in each band are determined from transfer and Key Stage 2 data

across English, Mathematics, Science and Modern Foreign Languages

Within each band students are set into three or more groups independently for English, Mathematics, Science, Modern Foreign Languages, and Design Technology

The remaining subjects are blocked with one of these subjects and setting is therefore determined by that subject.

In Science students in Year 9 will follow an introductory Key Stage 4 course. There are a number of course options in Science at Key Stage 4. The curriculum is structured so that all students will follow a basic introductory module. Students will then be guided as to the appropriate course for them during Terms 3 and 4 of Year 9. During Term 5 students will begin their GCSE Science programme of study. The courses available in Science are:

Triple Science leading to three GCSE grades in Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

Combined (double) Science. Students will study the trilogy route. This will lead to two separate Science GCSE qualifications.

At Windsor Girls' School it is our aim to offer all students the opportunity of receiving a comprehensive, programme of Personal Social and Health Education (PSHE) study which reflects the needs and personal development of our students. Students will participate in the Personal Development Learning programme throughout Years 9 - 13. During this time it is

Page 5: Year 9 Partnership Evening 2019fluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/FileCluster/WindsorGi… · 24/09/2019  · Welcome to Windsor Girls' School. Year 9 is an important year

our aim for all of our students to develop their personal and social well being, secure their own economic well being and their financial awareness in preparation for their future. The programme consists of:

Focus Days - on each day the main school timetable is collapsed and students follow a series of sessions tailored to their need and appropriate to their age group.

Assemblies - these are held weekly. This is a opportunity to ensure key messages are highlighted. The assembly programme is delivered by school staff and by external speakers.

Tutor Tasks - each week there is a focus topic which is related to the assemblies. The tutor task is structured to develop the assembly ideas further.

Community week – these take place once every term and allow students to work as a whole school community on a different focus topic. The topic is introduced to the students during an assembly and they spend their week working on tutor tasks and listening to talks given by external and internal speakers.

Focus of the Term - throughout the term students will be focused on developing their leadership, organisation, resilience, initiative and communication skills. These skills will be developed through various activities in Tutor Time and assemblies.

The Options Process - From Year 9 to Year 11 and beyond

During Term 3, students in Year 9 will begin the options process. This will guide them onto appropriate courses for Key Stage 4.

In designing our curriculum for Key Stage 4 we have endeavoured to provide a range of courses. It is important to put together a package that provides a broad and balanced curriculum. We would expect that the majority or our students will decide to study a GCSE in a humanity subject (Geography and/or History) and a GCSE in a language. This will mean that they keep as many options as possible open for their future career path. All courses offered at Key Stage 4 are Level 2 courses equivalent to 9-1 at GCSE. There are different types of courses on offer. Most are GCSE courses offering progression routes to A Levels and beyond. We offer a number of vocational options which will develop the skills required for the world of work. These courses are designed to minimise external examinations and are assessed mainly through ongoing assignments. These courses provide excellent progression routes through to Level 3 vocational options. In Years 10 and 11, students will study a core curriculum of: English Language and English Literature Mathematics One of the Science routes described previously Ethics PE Learning to Work In addition, students will be asked to choose four option subjects. Some of these subjects are not studied in Year 9. The options process will therefore ensure that students have appropriate guidance and support when choosing their Key Stage 4 curriculum. Throughout Terms 1 and 2, students will receive guidance on career progression in their Learning to Work lessons. They will complete surveys on appropriate career paths, investigate different types of qualifications and complete booklets which help them to understand their own skills and development needs. The Options Evening is on Thursday 6 February 2020. This is designed as an information evening for parents, carers and students and launches the process. Students will have a number of weeks to finalise their choices following this event. We work closely with parents and carers across this time to ensure that your daughter’s aspirations are closely matched to

Page 6: Year 9 Partnership Evening 2019fluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/FileCluster/WindsorGi… · 24/09/2019  · Welcome to Windsor Girls' School. Year 9 is an important year

Student Progress Policy Windsor Girls’ School is committed to supporting students in achieving their full potential. Our Learning and Teaching Framework is based on the three guiding principles outlined below. Every student has the right to:

1. Progress in their learning

2. Be active in their learning

3. Be clear on how to succeed You will receive progress information three times across the Academic Year. The Year 9 Subject Evening will take place on Thursday 5 March 2020 where you will have the opportunity to meet with Subject Teachers. Our assessment system has enabled us to strengthen our tracking of student progress and our ability to make timely interventions to support those who are underachieving relative to their projected targets. All subject areas have developed appropriate intervention support strategies and these will be used to support your daughter in achieving her predicted grades. Windsor Girls’ School has developed a system of target setting which is based on aspirational targets for all students, in all subjects and at all Key Stages. A target grade should reflect a student’s measured potential based on prior performance. Performance targets will be shared openly with parents/carers and students. In Year 9 target grades are generated as follows:

The minimum target grade is based on projected estimates from Key Stage 2 performance. Subject teachers will set aspirational targets based on these. We have a strong progress model which has been developed to track our students right through to A Level. These are known as Flightpaths.

CAT predictions will be used to give an indication of a student’s profile. They will also

be used to identify significant discrepancies between verbal, non-verbal and quantitative reasoning.

The Progress summary will contain a target GCSE grade for the end of KS4, a teacher prediction for the end of KS4 and an indication of the progress your daughter is making towards their target grade. There will also be information regarding effort, homework and conduct.

Routines at Windsor Girls' School

Homework and marking Homework is set regularly in all subjects. Students will have a homework timetable in which indicates when homework will be set by Subject Teachers. In core subjects students should expect four homework assignments per fortnight. In the Ebacc subjects (History, Geography and Languages) the expectation will be two assignments per fortnight and all other subjects will set one homework per fortnight. Homework can be accessed through the ‘Show My Homework’ online system.

Page 7: Year 9 Partnership Evening 2019fluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/FileCluster/WindsorGi… · 24/09/2019  · Welcome to Windsor Girls' School. Year 9 is an important year

The marking of work will depend on the nature of the task set. All teachers will use a common framework for marking classwork and homework which is based around our SIR (Success, Improvements, Response) marking policy. Every term students will complete a milestone piece of work which will be formally assessed by their teacher and given a grade. Attendance Absence needs to be reported by 9am to the school office on 01753 795155. If school has not been alerted of absence, a phone call will be made following registration during Period 1 to confirm cause for absence. Lateness to school Students arriving late to school must report to the Main Office. Inadequate reason for lateness incurs a 10 minute detention with the Form Tutor. Late arrival at school after 8.55am should be notified to the school office. Three incidences of lateness to school with inadequate reason in a week incurs a Year Leader after school detention.

Communication with school If you have any questions or concerns please contact your daughter's Form Tutor or the Subject Teacher in the first instance. If you feel it is of a more serious nature please contact the relevant Subject Leader or Miss Edwards, Year 9 Leader. Email addresses are available for all teachers or a message may be left with the school office to contact any member of staff as required. There are numerous ways that the school will communicate information to you: The School Website Letters home Parent Mail Newsletter School Planner Phonecall Email Twitter (@WGSWindsorGirls)

Opportunities

There is a broad range of extra-curricular options. These clubs vary from term to term however they include opportunities such as sport clubs, Magistrates Court Mock Trial, debating, Science club, Big Questions Philosophy Club and many more. Please see the extra curricular timetable for further details. Students are also given opportunities to become Year Ambassadors, Anti Bullying Ambassadors, Transition Leaders, Sports Leaders, House Captains, Language Leaders and members of the Year and Whole School council. Each student is a member of one of three houses - Carfax, Elmfield and Osborne. House events take place on a termly basis across a range of activities. Each house event has been designed with the key attributes of the PiXL Edge in mind and will give your daughter the opportunity to develop her skills in Leadership, Organisation, Resilience, Initiative and Communication. She will then be able to enter the activities on her PiXL Edge log in.
