Pastor’s Letter
Dear Parishioners:
Happy Memorial Day! As I write this letter, it’s sunny and I hope the weather holds for the weekend
– and the parade, of course! Memorial Day was originally called “Decoration Day” and it began after
the Civil War. After the Civil War, General John Logan called for a nation-wide day those who had
died in war to defend their country. Memorial Day did not become a federal holiday until 1971.
One of the customs associated with Memorial Day is the wearing of red poppies. In 1915, Moina
Michael, touched by reading the poem, In Flanders Fields, began the idea of wearing red poppies on
Memorial Day to remember those who died in the war. This custom quickly spread not just in the
United States but around the world. Money donated for the red poppies was used to help veterans in
need, war orphans, etc. In 1922, the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) became the first veterans’
organization to sell the poppies. In 1948, the Post Office honored Moina Michael for her role in the
national red poppy movement by issuing a red 3 cent stamp with her likeness on it.
While today, Memorial Day, signals the start of the summer season and it is a weekend filled with
sales in stores, barbecues, etc., let us also spend some moment of reflection to pray for those who
have died in defense of our country and for our freedoms, especially the freedom of religion which is
increasingly under attack.
For nearly 40 years, New York State and the State Education Department have provided aid (known
as Mandated Services) to Catholic and other religious schools based on a relatively simple formula.
In recent years, however, the State Education Department has forced numerous schools to use a dif-
ferent formula that results in a cut to their aid, despite growing support to public and charter schools.
Many more Catholic and other schools remain at risk of having their aid cut.
Please take the time to let lawmakers know we will not stand for a cut in aid to our Catholic schools.
Please go on line to New York State Catholic Conference. Once on the website, click on TAKE
ACTION and then click on the Join the Catholic Action Network. Please join this effort. We must
stop being a part of the silent majority and become the vocal majority!
As you know, this past week, there was a terrible terrorist attack after a concert in Manchester, Eng-
land. Over 20 people, many young, were killed and numerous others injured. Let us join with Pope
Francis as we pray for the victims of the terrorist attack in England. Pope Francis decried the
“barbaric attack” on concert goers. Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican Secretary of State, said the
Pope was “deeply saddened to learn of the injuries and tragic loss of life… Pope Francis invokes
God’s blessing of peace, healing and strength upon the nation.” We, too, all of us, need to pray for an
end of terrorism in the world.
Remember: Together, we can do something beautiful for God.
In Christ,
Fr. Brian

Monday is Memorial Day and we would like to recognize and show our
appreciation to all who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and
the freedoms we enjoy.
We would like to ask you to take a moment tomorrow to pray for those
that have served and are serving our nation. Many families have lost
loved ones, and our military men and women that have survived will
face countless struggles and challenges for the rest of their lives.
On Monday when we honor and celebrate their service and sacrifice,
let us also remember the once homeless veterans, who because of your
support of the Catholic Ministries Appeal, have been helped through
our ministries and programs like Catholic Charities Project Veterans’
Independence.
Thank you for your support! You make a difference in the lives of so
many through your prayers and generosity!

Catholic Ministries Appeal
11
Dear Friends,
Next week at all the masses we will present the Catholic Ministries Appeal video. This video will
give you an opportunity to learn exactly what the annual Appeal supports. You will get a great sense
of the many people the CMA serves throughout our Long Island Community. You will see and hear
their stories, and learn what CMA means to: the family served in an outreach program, the newly
ordained priest, youngsters in a vibrant youth ministry program, a lay leader who graduated from the
Diocesan Pastoral Formation Institute and a once homeless pregnant woman who benefited from
Catholic Charities' Regina Residence.
Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, has called each of us to imitate Jesus' love and compassion to those in
need. We have the opportunity to act on this call by supporting the Catholic Ministries Appeal which
serves and supports our wider Long Island Community.
Please give prayerful consideration to your level of support to help fund the essential ministries and
services supported by this Appeal which serves more than 600,000 people in our community each
year.
If we make our goal we will receive back 20% of all we raise to use for our own Parish needs. We are
counting on you, members of our parish family, to participate in this important campaign for the
ministries and programs of our church and for all who depend on them - including our own Parish.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Rev. Monsignor Brian J. McNamara
Pastor

Jesus prayed for His friends. He
knew they were a special gift
from God. He cared about His
friends and forgave them from His
heart. Everything that Jesus did
showed what God was like. Be a
