The Solemnity of the Ascension The celebra#on of our Lord's Ascension

highlights that our Lord intends that His power

and authority is passed on from one genera#on

to the next. Moses, for example does God's

work in guiding and instruc#ng God's people,

leading them out of Egypt. God instructs Moses

to pass on the con#nua#on of this task to Joshua. Elijah the

great prophet, likewise called upon by God to strengthen His

people in truth, and to help them avoid the dangers of religious

indifference. Elisha, the successor to Elijah carries on this work.

Most of us have been involved in various projects of

one sort or another such as building projects; various social

ac#vi#es or organiza#ons; fundraisers for cancer research, or

wounded warrior programs for returning veterans or Badger

Camp, or some Pro-life organiza#on. And if we find such

projects and programs worthwhile, we want to see them grow

and con#nue on. Just like when a family rejoices when a new

baby is born, because there is hope for the family to con#nue

on into the next genera#on.

In the Second Reading and in the Gospel, we see that

our Lord has completed His mission of redeeming the human

race. However, He is now ready to pass on His power and

authority to the Apostles and their successors in a very specific

way, and to all of us in His Church, in a general way to do what

we can, so that the redemp#ve work of Jesus can take effect in

our lives and the lives of others. With His Ascension, He

prepares His people for the coming of the Holy Spirit. It is no

longer the weak and dying Lord of Good Friday who ascends

into heaven. No, it is the All-Powerful Lord of both the Living

and the Dead.

And just as Joshua, Elisha and the Apostles were not

chosen to be passive onlookers, but were called by God to

con#nue His work in the world, so too, each one of us, as

members of the Church, are called upon to con#nue the work

of God using the gi*s of the Holy Spirit. We have not been

called by Christ to be passive observers. We have been called

by Christ as Catholics, as Chris#ans, to con#nue His work in

2017. We have been called by our Bap#sm and by our

Confirma#on to con#nue the work of the Lord in our daily lives.

At this #me of the year, people are listening to

wonderful speeches at gradua#ons in high schools and

colleges. And the Graduates are called upon to make the best

use of their educa#on so as to make the world a be"er place,

and this is great! But the Ascension of our Lord should remind

each one of us, that we too by our Bap#sm and Confirma#on,

have been commissioned by Jesus to make the world a be"er

place, by the prac#ce of our Catholic Faith.

And Jesus expects each one of us to make His Presence

alive in the way we live and in the way we interact with others.

May each one of us, through our Bap#sm and Confirma#on,

have the courage to con#nue the Work of God in these

challenging #mes.
