Cera Smith Bachelor of Applied Science (Physical Activity, Health and Wellness)

“Last week we went kayaking and I’m really looking forward to the mountain biking and rock climbing.”

Cera Smith, mum of three and first-year student, is always on the go!

Passionate about helping people to lead healthier lives, the 30-year-old was drawn to the Bachelor of Applied Science (Physical Activity, Health and Wellness) by the combination of both practical and theoretical learning. Seven months in and she feels that balance is just right.

“I’ve always been a very active person and the mixture of lectures, gym time and training is awesome.”

After a few part-time jobs, the transition between stay-at-home mum and full-time student was eased greatly by the support of staff: “The lecturers are so down to earth – you’re definitely not just a number. They really help you hone your time-management skills.”

After graduating, Cera is keen to specialise in the health and wellness industry – helping people to manage their weight and working with those who already have, or are at risk of developing, diabetes.

Hayden CroftMPhED, BPhEd Lecturer, Otago Institute of Sport and Adventure

New to the OISA in 2010, Hayden brings an ongoing interest in Sport Science, especially Biomechanics and Video Technology. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education (Sports Science/Prescription) and a Master of Physical Education (Biomechanics).

Over the past couple of years, Hayden has worked with the New Zealand Rugby Union and the All Blacks, helping in the development of simulation technologies for decision making and lineout practice. In September 2009, he developed a wireless head camera for the All Blacks coaching staff. This was part of an initiative to help develop the All Blacks backs’ abilities to identify visual cues and make appropriate decisions.

“Students choose us because of our reputation as a highly-regarded institute of applied research and technology.”

David Moseley (United Kingdom)Diploma in Outdoor Leadership and Management (Level 5)

“The lecturers are fantastic and so approachable. I feel as though I can ask them anything.”

David Moseley is an outdoor enthusiast. So much so, he packed his bags and travelled from the United Kingdom to the exotic destination of New Zealand; a land of infinite opportunity for the outdoor adventure junky.

The 19-year-old landed on New Zealand soil at the beginning of the year to study an Outdoor Leadership and Management diploma at the Otago Institute of Sport and Adventure at Otago Polytechnic.

“I have always loved the outdoors and have quite a lot of experience in mountaineering, rock climbing, and kayaking. I thought this programme was perfect and encompassed everything I wanted.”

Between the buzzing student life in Dunedin and the adventure opportunities in Central Otago, David has no issues keeping his weekend agenda full.

“I absolutely love it so far and can’t say a single bad word about it. It doesn’t feel as though I’m actually studying, I’m just having loads of fun!”
