African Song and Round arr. Deborah Baker Monday

This arrangement of two songs from western Africa – Ise Oluwa from Nigeria and Banuwa from Liberia – has everything a teacher could hope for in a concert selection: variety, excitement andsimple beauty. High and low string parts are symmetrical for the greatest ease in teaching and creating a solid performance sound. Percussion instruments can always be added to double the string rhythms; hand drums, tambourine and/or claves would be mostappropriate.

Dominique's Dance John Nieto

A lyrical mariachi waltz entirely in first position! Imagine a father holding his precious newborn girl, and all the while visions of her Quinceañera (15th birthday celebration) dance through his mind. The Quinceañera is an important celebration in the Mexican-American community, where the girl is given her last doll and dances a waltz (vals) with her father. The easy finger patterns, cross-cultural themes and opportunities for each section to play the melody make this a perfect first ensemble piece!

Although transposed to G Major from the original key of Eb, this setting of the Jupiter theme remains true to the original version. All parts are playable in first position except for the bass, which requires a brief shift for C above the staff. Orchestras without basses may effectively perform this arrangement, provided the cello line is sufficiently covered. The Lost Tomb Sean O'Loughlin

The Lost Tomb has its origin in the pages of historically-based novels enjoyed by the composer. The music has both an intrigue and a heart-pounding pulse that keeps the player and the listener on the edge of their seat. This original composition also presents some outstanding teaching tools for the developing string student. It starts with a slow, ominous melody in the first violin that builds suspense. This melody is then developed with harmony underneath and varying rhythmic accompaniments. The celli and basses get their opportunity on the melody towards the end, and the opening melody returns to bring the piece full circle. A lovely, dramatic showcase for the young group.

Young string players do not get the opportunity to play Brahms often because much of his greatest music is written for piano, and other works are much too complex. But embedded in the fiery Rhapsody in B Minor (Op. 79, No. 1) is a beautiful interlude which takes on a form of its own. Simple melodies are passed among all instruments and harmonized in parallel 3rds and 6ths. This work has been carefully edited so that it can be performed by intermediate full orchestras. First violins, cellos and basses have a few shifts into positions, while second violin and viola parts can be played entirely in first position. Woodwind and brass parts are edited with fingerings, slide positions and courtesy accidentals for the benefit of those students without extensive playing experience in sharp keys. And don't forget the anvils!! This is a great opportunity to have a "guest" percussionist (a principal, superintendent, local celebrity, etc.) join the orchestra.

The first movement is a "Beguine," which is a ballroom dance popularized in the 1930s. The Beguine originated in the Caribbean islands of Martinique and St. Lucia. The second movement is a "Tango," a dance from Argentina which originated in the late 1800s. The rhythm of the Tango is similar to the "Habanera" from Cuba. The final movement is a "Jarabe," a dance rhythm from the Mexican state of Jalisco which is popular in mariachi music. The Jarabe is in 6/8, with contrasting sections in 3/4 and 2/4. Franz Joseph Haydn/arr. Todd Parrish

Celebrate Haydn's 200th anniversary with this outstanding symphony! This exciting and energetic work is a rare example of Haydn's use of the minor tonality in symphonic writing, which is aptly subtitled "Trauer," translated "Mourning." The string parts are very close to the original with changes made only to accommodate the important lines of the original oboe and horn parts. Students will thoroughly enjoy the contrapuntal style allowing simultaneous independent melodies. Some shifting is required through third position for violins and fourth position for cellos and basses.

Prelude (for String Orchestra)

Gerald Finzi

Originally conceived in the 1920s as the opening movement of a (subsequently uncompleted) chamber symphony, to be entitled The Bud, the Blossom and the Berry, the Prelude nevertheless stands convincingly as an independent piece. The music has a compelling forward drive, building to a concluding climax of power and expectancy, as the prevailing minor key breaks into the radiant warmth of the major.

Praeludium (Allegro comodo) • Air (Adagio, ma non troppo) • Intermezzo (Allegretto grazioso) • Romanze (Andante con moto) • Gavotte (Allegro deciso). The five parts of the Serenade are reconstituted movements taken from Foote’s earlier Suite No. 1, Op. 12, and his Suite No. 2, Op 21. The tonalities outline the E minor triad. Amiable tunes that are finely-suited to strings, well-ordered rhythms, and telling harmonies are hallmarks to Foote’s writing for this genre.

Considered Foote’s most famous piece of orchestral music, this suite originally had four movements, but Foote eventually cut one (Theme and Variations).
