ELECTRICAL SAFETY• Use only a 120 A.C. voltage supply

as shown on the nameplate of unit.• Avoid dangerous situations. Do not

use in the presence of flammable liq-uids or gases to avoid creating a fireor explosion and/or causing damageto unit.

WARNING: Avoid a dangerousenvironment. To reduce the risk ofelectrical shock, do not use in rain, indamp or wet locations, or aroundswimming pools, hot tubs, etc. Do notexpose to snow, rain, or water to avoidthe possibility of electrical shock.WARNING: To reduce the risk of

electrical shock, use extension cordsspecifically marked as suitable for out-door appliances having an electricalrating not less than the rating of theunit. The cord must be marked with the

suffix "W-A." Use a polarized cord.Make sure your extension cord is ingood condition. Replace damagedcords. An undersized extension cord

will cause a drop in line voltage result-ing in loss of power and overheating. Ifin doubt, use the next heavier gauge.The smaller the gauge number theheavier the cord (NOTE: The chart inthe Extension Cord section shows cor-

rect size to be used depending on cordlength).• Do not attempt to repair unit. Inspect

insulation and connectors on unitand appliance cord before each use.

If there is any damage, do not useuntil damage is repaired by yourSears Service Center/Department.

• Inspect extension cords before eachuse and replace if damaged.

• Don't abuse cord. Never carry unitby the cord or yank extension cord todisconnect unit.

• To reduce the possibility of the ex-tension cord disconnecting from theunit during operation, tie the powercord on the unit to the extension cordas shown in the Extension Cord sec-tion. Insert cord socket on the unit

into the extension cord receptacle.• Do not use unit if the switch does not

turn the unit on and off properly. Re-pairs to the switch must be made byyour Sears Service Center.

• Keep extension cord clear of opera-tor, unit, and obstacles at all times.Do not expose the cord to heat, oil,water, or sharp edges.

• Avoid any body contact with anygrounded conductor, such as metalpipes or wire fences, to avoid thepossibility of electric shock.

• Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GPOI)protection should be provided on thecircuit or outlet to be used for thisunit. Receptacles are available hav-ing built-in GFCI protection and maybe used for this measure of safety.

• To reduce the risk of electric shock,this unit has a polarized plug (oneblade is wider than the other) and willrequire the use of a polarized exten-sion cord. This plug will fit into a po-larized extension cord only one way.If the plug does not fitfully into theextension cord, reverse the plug. If itstill does not fit, obtain a correct po-larized extension cord.A polarized extension cord will re-quire the use of a polarized wall out-let. This plug will fit into the polarizedwall outlet only one way. If the plugdoes not fit into the wall outlet, re-verse the plug. If it still does not fit,

contactaqualifiedelectriciantoinstalltheproperwalloutlet.Donotchangetheequipmentplug,exten-sioncordreceptacle,orextensioncordpluginanyway.

UNIT SAFETY• Do not attempt to repair unit. Inspect

entire unit and extension cord before

each use. Have damaged parts re-paired or replaced by your SearsService Center. Make sure all fasten-

ers, handles, and guards are in placeand securely fastened. A guard orother part that is damaged should beproperly repaired or replaced by aSears Service Center.

• Replace blades that are bent,warped, cracked, broken, or dam-aged in any other way.

• Before using your unit, have yourSears Service Center repair or replaceparts that are cracked, chipped, bro-ken, or damaged in any other way.

• Use only genuine Craftsman re-placement blades and accessoriesas recommended for this unit. Neveruse wire, rope, string, etc. Use of anyother accessory or attachment mayincrease the risk of injury or causedamage to the unit.

• Keep blade guard in place and ingood working order.

EDGING SAFETY• Inspect the area to be edged before

each use. Remove objects (rocks,broken glass, nails, wire, string, etc.)which can be thrown by blade or canwrap around blade shaft.

• Keep children away. Keep others in-cluding children, animals, bystandersand helpers outside the 100 foot (30meter) Hazard Zone. Stop the unitimmediately if you are approached.

• Always keep unit in front of your body.Keep hands and feet away from cut-ting area.

• Hold the unit firmly with both hands.

• Do not overreach or use from unsta-

ble support. Keep firm footing andbalance at all times.

• Keep wheels in contact with ground.• Do not raise the unit above the

ground. The blade can come dan-gerously close to your body.

• Always push unit slowly over ground.Stay alert for uneven sidewalks,holes in terrain, large roots, etc.

• Do not force the unit; it will do the jobbetter and with less likelihood of a riskof injury at the rate for which it was de-signed. Use the right appliance. Useonly for jobs explained in this manual.

MAINTENANCE SAFETY• Maintain unit with care. Maintain unit

according to recommended proce-dures. Follow instructions for changingblades in the SERVICE AND ADJUST-

MENTS section. Keep blade and bladeguard clean to reduce the risk of injury.

• Never start unit with blade guard re-moved; blade can fly off or can throwobjects and cause serious injury.

• Disconnect unit from the powersource before performing mainte-nance or changing blades.

• Use only genuine Craftsman re-placement parts as recommended.

• Have all maintenance and service

not explained in this manual per-formed by a Sears Service Center.

• Never douse or squirt the unit withwater or any other liquid. Clean theunit and labels with a damp sponge.Keep handles dry, clean, and freefrom oil and grease.

TRANSPORTING & STORAGE• Transport unit with motor stopped

and the blade away from your body.• Do not grasp or hold exposed blade.• Unplug unit before storing; secure

unit when transporting it in a vehicle.• Store unit so the blade cannot acci-

dentally cause injury. The unit can behung by the handle.

• Store unit indoors. Store unit un-plugged in a high, dry place out ofreach of children.

EXTENSION CORD

Use only a 120 A.C. voltage supply asshown on nameplate of the unit topower your edger.The extension cord used to reach thepower source must be:• Specifically marked as suitable for

outdoor use. The cord must bemarked with the suffix "W-A."

• Heavy enough to carry current fromthe power source the full length of theextension cord to the unit. Otherwise,loss of power and overheating can oc-cur causing damage to unit. Refer tochart for minimum wire gauge recom-mendations. The cord must bemarked with the proper wire gauge.(Appropriate extension cords are avail-able.) Do not use multiple cords.

• In good condition. Cord insulationmust be intact with no cracks or

deterioration. Plug connectors mustbe undamaged.

• Tie the power plug on the unit to theextension cord as shown.

DOUBLE INSULATION CONSTRUCTION

This unit is Double Insulated to helpprotect against electric shock. Doubleinsulation construction consists of two

separate "layers" of electrical insula-tion instead of grounding.Tools and appliances built with adouble insulation system are not in-tended to be grounded. No groundingmeans is provided on this unit, norshould a means of grounding be add-ed to this unit. As a result, the exten-sion cord used with your unit can beplugged into any standard 120 voltelectrical outlet.Safety precautions must be observedwhen operating any electrical tool. Thedouble insulation system only providesadded protection against injury result-ing from an internal electrical insulationfailure.

WARNING:Allelectricalrepairstothisunit,includinghousing,switch,motor,etc., must be diagnosed and re-paired by qualified service personnel.Replacement parts for a double insu-lated appliance must be identical to theparts they replace. A double insulatedappliance is marked with the words

The TRIGGER SWITCH is used to acti-vate the motor.The PIVOT LOCKING LEVER is en-

gaged to reposition the cutting angle.The BLADE is designed to cut grass.

The BLADE GUARD provides protec-tion from the spinning blade.The DEPTH ADJUSTMENT KNOB allowsyou to adjust blade to the desired depth.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONSOPERATING POSITIONYour unit has two operating positions,one for edging, one for beveling.To set operating position:• Move pivot locking lever toward han-

dle and hold. Pivot motor to desiredposition. Release pivot locking lever,making sure motor locks into position.

EDGING METHODS

WARNING: The operator or othersmust not try to clear away cut materialwith the motor running or the bladeturning to avoid serious injury.WARNING: Stop motor and bladeand disconnect unit from power sourcebefore removing materials wrappedaround blade shaft to avoid injury.• Allow the motor to reach full speed

before entering the material to becut. The blade has maximum cuttingpower at full speed and is less likelyto bind or stall.

• If blade does not turn when switch isactivated, make sure it is not stuck orbound by debris.

As you become familiar with youredger, you will be able to determineyour own operating pace. Conditionssuch as depth of cut, angle of cut, andmaterial being cut will regulate thespeed and time required for your edg-ing job.

EDGING ! !

EDGING--yields precise, close cuttingaround sidewalks, driveways, patios,etc.

BEVELING--provides a wider cut ortrench around sidewalks, driveways, pa-tios, etc. Beveling removes more materi-al and therefore increases motor load.

Be careful to cut slowly to avoid motorstalling or overload, which may damagemotor. The width of the bevel cut can be

changed by adjusting the depth of thefront wheel (see Depth Adjustment).

The front wheel can be adjusted to allowfor a deeper or shallower cut. Move thewheel up for a deeper cut, down for ashallower cut. When the wheel is ad-

justed all the way down (travel position),the blade is lifted clear of the ground.Adjust as follows:• Loosen the knob on the front wheel

assembly.• Adjust the wheel to set the blade

depth. Use a higher wheel setting fordeep edging, a lower wheel settingfor shallow edging and trenching.

• Tighten knob securely.

OPERATING TIPS• Allow the blade to reach full speed

before placing the blade in the cut.Be careful to cut slowly to avoid mo-tor stalling or overload, which maydamage the motor.

• Keep your edging path straight bykeeping the edge guide in contact withthe edge of the walkway.

• Always work going away from peopleand solid objects such as walls, largestones, trees, automobiles, etc.

• Be careful when edging near trees orvaluable plants. The high speed met-al blade may cut roots and causedamage to the plants.

• Always keep blade area clean. Stopthe unit, make sure blade has com-pletely stopped turning, and discon-nect unit from the power source be-fore cleaning.

• If blade stalls, immediately raise theblade from the cut by lowering thehandle. If blade continues to stall

when raised, stop the unit, discon-nect the power source, and inspectthe blade area for blockage or dam-age. Clean the blade area of debris.

• The blade is reversible. When the

cutting edge on one side becomesworn, turn the blade over.

• Check blade for flatness periodically.Lay the blade on a flat surface andinspect the blade for flatness. Throwaway a blade that is not flat.

WARNING: Always replace a bladethat is bent, warped, cracked, broken,or damaged in any other way. Neverattempt to straighten and reuse a dam-aged blade. Use only the specified re-placement blade.To reverse or replace blade:• Disconnect unit from power source.• Fit a wrench onto the shaft behind

the blade.

• Using another wrench remove hexnut, cup washer, and spring washer.

• Remove the blade.• Clean all parts and check for dam-

age. Replace damaged parts.• Reverse or replace blade. Reinstall

blade onto shaft.

• Install the spring washer, makingsure the outer, notched edge con-tacts the blade.

• Install the cup washer, making surethe lip of the washer is facing towardthe spring washer.

• Install the hex nut; tighten securely.

• Lightly oil external metal surfaces.CAUTION: Wear protective gloveswhen handling the blade. The blade issharp and can cut you even when it isnot moving.• Apply a coating of oil to entire surface

of blade; wrap it in heavy paper orcloth.

• Be sure all handles and guards arein place and are securely fastened.Replace any damaged parts.

• Check entire unit for loose screws,nuts, and bolts. Replace any dam-aged, worn, or broken parts.

• Do not cover with plastic. Plastic can-not breathe and will induce condensa-tion and eventual rust or corrosion.

• Trabaje siempre alejado de perso-nas, de objetos s61idos coma sonparedes, piedras grandes, &rboles,autom6viles, etc.

• Sea cuidadoso cuando corte cercade &rboles o plantas valiosas. La cu-chilla de metal a alta velocidadpodria cortar las raices o causardaSo a las plantas.

• Mantenga siempre el &tea de la cu-chilla limpia. Detenga el aparato,asegQrese de que la cuchilla est6completamente detenida, y descon-necte el aparato del tomacorriente,antes de limpiar.

• Si la cuchilla se cala, de inmediatolevante la cuchilla del &rea de cortehacienda bajar el mango. Si la cu-chilla continua cal&ndose al levantar-la, detenga el aparato, descon6ctelodel tomacorriente e inspeccione el&rea de la cuchilla en caso de blo-queo o algQn dat_o.
