During the 2008 Presidential Debates, I wrote a story about the Hofstra University student body reaction to their campus
holding the third and final presidential debate. I went to Hofstra my freshman year before transferring to GWU. My last project was volunteering with the Commission on Presidential
Debates!
Reporting from the campus of Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York, sophomore, political science major Melissa Henderson tells us what it’s like for the students who are about to witness the final debate between Senators McCain and Obama tonight. The feeling on campus today is one of pure excitement. Students overall are eager, making plans and hunting down various media outlets, trying to get on national television so they can give a shout-out to mom and dad at home. Students feel honored to be in the midst of tonight’s debate, but because of the shortages of tickets being dispersed, they’re trying to find other ways of getting in. But just hours before everything starts, it’s hectic and tense and we can all feel the security lockdown that is here to ensure the safety of the candidates. September not only marks the beginning of a new school year, but also the forecast for next spring’s fashions. This past week, American designers united in New York to showcase their new lines in an attempt to reinvent the trends through time lapses, technology and what’s current in society. From an amalgamation of femininity, minimalism, floras and nostalgia from different cultures, the agenda for both women and men was color, color and, yes, more color! A consistent representation of canary yellow and tangerine orange lit up the runways. Tommy Hilfiger’s Men’s collection solidified that men can get just as daring as women with color- as the traditional army fatigue print was mixed and matched with splashes of purple and bright grass green garments. Oh! And tangerine orange, green and blue leather starter (sporty-like) jackets were also a new addition to the Hilfiger conservative brand. Not to mention, Buckler’s public presentation held on the streets of the Meat Packing District featured several shorts paired with a suit jacket looks. Which made us question, is this a new interpretation of “business casual”? … Do shorts really have a seat in the workplace? Where did the time go? It’s hard to believe that an entire year has passed. In June 2011, 900AM launched our first ever membership campaign. The program, known as 900 In 90, provided a tangible way for listeners and supporters to make a personal investment in the station’s work and mission.
As the only African-American owned and operated talk radio station in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania (and one of few in the country), we know that what we have in 900AM is rare. Whether it’s news makers, opinion shapers or individuals like yourself, WURD is one of the few places where our community can speak – and be heard - in our own voice.
Your generous investment in 2011 not only helped preserve our station at a critical time but also expanded our reach and our impact.
Internally we were able to make capital improvements to our broadcast studios, upgrade our technology/broadcast equipment, and provide opportunities for sta! training. Externally, we were able to launch and convene programs, expand our broadcast lineup, and develop important community partnerships. Your $90 contribution along with advertiser investments this past year have significantly helped sustain this important institution.
Enclosed you will find a snapshot of some of the exciting programs that we undertook over the course of the past year. These activities would have been impossible to execute without your commitment to the station.

“I was very impressed with the articulate and
knowledgeable speakers. They presented the issues
in a non-confrontational way.
